Year 9: History Work Week Nine Instructions: Mark Week 8 work from the answers provided --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This week you will have to look over some of the resources that you have already used for Historical information to help you with your task. These resources have been added again, they are Worksheets 19,21,23,24 and Textbook pages 57 and 58 All of these resources give you information about the Siege of Derry. SOME OF THESE RESOURCES CONTAIN QUESTIONS- DO NOT DO THESE QUESTIONS AGAIN, JUST USE THE INFORMATION ON THEM TO HELP Y0U DO YOUR TASK, WHICH IS DESCRIBED LATER. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Siege of Derry: 1689 One of the reasons we know so much about the Siege of Derry is because a Protestant minister called the Reverend George Walker kept a diary throughout the siege. He survived the siege and also fought for King William at the Battle of the Boyne the following year in 1690. Siege of Derry and Covid 19 Lockdown: The siege was in many ways like the current lockdown, you cannot leave your house and your normal life is ended for a while (although hopefully you have not been forced to eat rats during the lock-down like they did during the siege!). Your Task: Imagine you are at the Siege of Derry – what are conditions like? Your task is to write about what life was like for the people who were besieged within the walls of Derry/Londonderry for 100 days (that is more than 3 months, your complete lockdown was only roughly 2 months). How to do the Task: There are several ways you can do this task A. Diary- You can write a diary entry (like George Walker) over the course of 1 week describing conditions during the siege (use the included resources for information, but also use your imagination to think about what it must have been really like to live like this – your experiences during the current lockdown could help with this as well). B. Letter - You could pretend to write a letter to a friend or relative in England/Scotland and describe what living during the siege is really like. C. Newspaper Report - You could pretend to be a newspaper reporter who is present at the siege and describe for your readers what conditions were like in Derry during the siege – you could include interviews with made-up people if you wish – pretending that they have been actually been at the siege. What to write about in your task: You could include some of the following points How did the siege start? (the struggle to decide who should rule England – James or William? The role of the Apprentice Boys) What were conditions like during the siege - what were you forced to do? How did you spend your time? Do you think the siege is ever going to end (Williams sending his army/ships to help)? What are you looking forward to doing once the siege has ended? Do you want revenge on James for what he has put you through? How did the siege actually end? (the relief ships with supplies getting through) How did you feel when this happened? You do not have to write about all of the points above, but try to include as many as possible. A good response to this task will include factual information and using your imagination to write about what you think life was like during the siege and how people felt – this is called empathy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There will be no answers for Week 9 going up next Monday as everyone will have written different versions. But if you would like your work marked, send it to your teacher at the following addresses (some of you have been doing this anyway).
