O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar como as relações lésbicas são retratadas nas obras “Loving Her” e “The Color Purple”. Ao analisar as relações entre homens/mulheres e mulheres/mulheres, este estudo também revê e critica o “golpe triplo” sofrido por lésbicas negras, por serem, ao mesmo tempo, mulheres, afro- americanas e homossexuais. Utilizando fatos históricos para situar as obras em um contexto social, além da teoria do lesbian continuum afim de atestar a riqueza e diversidade do laço afetivo entre mulheres, este trabalho vem por desmistificar as noções simplistas em relação à literatura lésbica Afro-Americana, afugentando a sombra que pairava sobre o “tabu” e elevando a mulher negra, lésbica ou não, a seu lugar de direito na sociedade. ABSTRACT The aim of this work is to analyze how lesbian relationships are portrayed in the fictional works “Loving Her” and “The Color Purple”. By analyzing the relationships between men/women and women/women depicted in the chosen literary works, this study also revises and criticizes the “triple strike” suffered by black lesbians for being females, African-Americans and homosexuals. Using historical facts to place the fictional works in a social frame, and using the theory of lesbian continuum to attest the richness and diversity of women bonding, this work demystifies the simplistic notions of African-American lesbian literature, casting away the shadow upon the “unspeakable” and elevating black women, lesbians or not, to their rightful place in society. We learn and grow from knowledge of human behavior and relationships that we discover in works of art. The experiences contained in a book can provide a number of sentiments such as comfort, enlightenment or relief to a troubled soul. Each writer, an expert or not, a liver or an observer, has the power to change preconceived notions, challenge the world, let more light in the sultry room of forbidden subjects he or she has chosen to bring to life. Dealing with the literature of the “unspeakable” elevate these author’s writings “to a degree beyond the confinement imposed by the literary structures of the hegemonic power”1. The works presented in this research show the experience of black women, written by black women, about black women. Being the least visible group not only in fine arts, but also in popular media, it is time for the African- American women to come out and acknowledge the weeds in their own backyard. The issues they deal with go far beyond their skin color, though. Sexism, male violence, racial prejudice and the exploration of their sexuality compose this intricate web of black female oppression. However, ethnicity, gender and sexuality norms can straitjacket such literature which has the unique power to provide access to the subjectivity and complexity of these black women. The introduction of black lesbian character in mainstream literature, in special, allows closeted black women readers to finally meet someone they can relate to. For other women of color, reading about the black lesbian as a real person with similar struggles allows them to experience the different, the individuality of their sisters. Hence the importance of acknowledging works which introduce black lesbian issues to a wide, multicultural readership, exploring the intersections of sexuality, ethnicity, gender and class (KEATING, 1997, p.14). The study of black women writers and their real and fictional struggles is not only important for anyone studying lesbian literature, but anyone studying black history. The main aim of this thesis is to investigate, analyze and compare how lesbian relationships are portrayed in the fictional works Loving Her and The Color Purple. Crenshaw ABSTRACT UCLA LAW REVIEW UCLA LAW The structural and political dimensions of gender violence and mass incarceration are linked in multiple ways. The myriad causes and consequences of mass incarceration discussed herein call for increased attention to the interface between the dynamics that constitute race, gender, and class power, as well as to the way these dynamics converge and rearticulate themselves within institutional settings to manufacture social punishment and human suffering. Beyond addressing the convergences between private and public power that constitute the intersectional dimensions of social control, this Article addresses political failures within the antiracism and antiviolence movements that may contribute to the legitimacy of the contemporary punishment culture, both ideologically and materially.     Cultivating Black Lesbian Shamelessness: Alice Walker’s The Color Purple CHRISTOPHER S. LEWIS Ohio State University n her pivotal 1979 essay “Toward a Black Feminist Criticism,” Barbara Smith Ilamented the lack of black lesbian representation in U.S. literary criticism. She explained that “All segments of the literary world—whether establishment, progressive, Black, female, or lesbian—do not know, or at least act as if they do not know, that Black women writers and Black lesbian writers exist” (132). The unprecedented amount of writing by and/or about black lesbians that emerged in the 1970s and 1980s made the question and value of black lesbian writing’s existence of fundamental importance to African American literary studies in particular. Four seminal black lesbian texts—Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, Audre Lorde’s Zami: A New Spelling of My Name, Ntozake Shange’s Sassafrass, Cyprus, & Indigo, and Gloria Naylor’s The Women of Brewster Place—were published in 1982.1 Lesbian-identified writers Ann Allen Shockley, Cheryl Clarke, Alexis De Veaux, Jewelle Gomez, Audre Lorde, Pat Parker, and Alice Walker each began and developed their careers between 1970 and 1990.2 Writers like Octavia Butler, Gayl Jones, Jamaica Kincaid, Toni Morrison, Gloria Naylor, and Ntozake Shange who did not openly identify as lesbian or same-sex desiring also published writing in the 1970s and 1980s that explicitly represented black lesbian characters and/or shared black lesbian writing’s general interest in women’s same-sex relationships.3 These writers were at odds with major male writers of the 1960s and 1970s Black Arts Movement like Amiri Baraka and Eldridge Cleaver because they critiqued what E.

Although research has long shown that women, people of color and low- income communities are more vulnerable to natural hazards, the disproportionate effects of Hurricane Katrina and subsequent federal and state disaster response efforts forced the national spotlight on the institutional and systemic nature of racism, classism and sexism. Using Black feminism and radical planning theory, two lenses that provides a comprehensive framework for understanding racism, classism and sexism, this article examines the concept and literature of social vulnerability. I argue while social vulnerability research has made significant contributions to planners’ understandings of disasters and inequity, it fails to center community knowledge, identify intersectional oppressions and name them as such and encourage community activism, all of which are keys to making meaningful change. It also became clear that literacy, social justice activism, and literary cultural production have always intersected for middle class, educated Black women. As Michelle Garfield points out, “The Philadelphia women who organized the Female Literary Association...hoped to engage in activities that would expand their own mental capabilities. Yet they also used these skills to engage actively in political discussions regarding slavery and the rights of blacks.”1 Most important was the drive to satisfy both the collective needs of their people and their own individual needs as gifted, educated women.     Introduction African American Feminist Practices Abstract political and moral statements, however inspiring they may be, do not in themselves produce social change. Real change requires real-life action. This collection of fi rst-person narratives provides much-needed examples of the concrete ways in which contemporary African Americans, both women and men, live by feminist principles, not just as beliefs or theories but by our actions in concrete situations. Feminists—whether inside or outside academic settings—are accustomed to working with ideas and models that are part of a larger ideology of social justice, which we need to understand and transform our world. Feminism, however, is more than a set of theories and perspectives associated with a par- ticular ideology; it is something we put into practice. How can ordinary people, whether or not they identify themselves as feminists, apply to their daily lives the basic idea that women are as fully human as men? And if we do identify as feminists, how do we relate our feminist ideas and values to our behavior? The African American women and men in this book share personal accounts of how they encountered feminist ideas and are using them now as a guide to living, expressed in relevant, everyday practices. A person, female or male, whose feminism is practical recognizes that there is an imbalance of power between men and women in our society and acts publicly and privately in ways to correct that imbalance.1 The personal chapters included here reveal how feminist principles affect people’s perception of their ability to change themselves as well as society.

Homosexuality has always been seen as pathological in western society. While the Black Power Movement challenged and redefined identity politics of “blackness,” the Gay Liberation movements did so to homosexuality. These two movements were contingent to changing dominant society’s myopic constructions of racist and heterosexist conceptualizations of racial and sexual identities. In-spite of all their achievements, neither of these movements was able to create a space in the society or to empower individuals who were at once, blacks and “sexual minorities” in the American society. And, no movement what so ever, save some legislations have been able to curb homophobia and its resulting violence on LGBT people and more specifically, on LGBT women of colour. Leslie and Mac Neil say that black lesbian identity portrays the intersection of race, class, gender and sexual orientation. Written by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Kathryn Shultz, the review enthusiastically analyzes the exhaustive biography of the Baltimore, Maryland-born Durham, North Carolina-raised woman of African descent’s multifaceted life: her career as a lawyer, activist and Episcopal Priest; her organizational work including as a founding member of the National Organization for Women and the Congress of Racial Equality; as well as her intellectual contributions which include critical theorizations of gender and racial discrimination (Rosenberg, 2017).
