From Private Violence to Mass Incarceration: Thinking Intersectionally About Women, Race, and Social Control Kimberlé W. Crenshaw ABSTRACT UCLA LAW REVIEW UCLA LAW The structural and political dimensions of gender violence and mass incarceration are linked in multiple ways. The myriad causes and consequences of mass incarceration discussed herein call for increased attention to the interface between the dynamics that constitute race, gender, and class power, as well as to the way these dynamics converge and rearticulate themselves within institutional settings to manufacture social punishment and human suffering. Beyond addressing the convergences between private and public power that constitute the intersectional dimensions of social control, this Article addresses political failures within the antiracism and antiviolence movements that may contribute to the legitimacy of the contemporary punishment culture, both ideologically and materially. LGBT Terminology & Cultural Information Orientation Related Terms Sexual Orientation - The internal experience that determines whether we are physically and emotionally attracted to men, to women, to both, or neither (asexual). Biphobia - Fear and intolerance of bisexual people. Bisexual/Bisexuality/Bi - A person who feels love, affection, and sexual attraction regardless of gender. Down-low - slang term that refers to men who have sex with men (MSM) but are either closeted or do not identify as gay. Most often associated with and has its origins in African American culture in the US Gay Man/Homosexual - A man who feels love, affection, and sexual attraction toward men. Heterosexism - Institutional policies and interpersonal actions that assume heterosexuality is normative and ignores other orientations. The belief that heterosexuality is superior to other orientations. Heterosexual/Heterosexuality/Straight - A person who feels love, affection, and sexual attraction to persons of a different gender. Homophobia - Fear and intolerance of homosexual people and/or of same sex attraction or behavior in the self or others. Lesbian/Homosexual - A woman who feels love, affection and sexual attraction toward women. Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) - or Males who have sex with Males (MSM) a clinical term that refers to men who engage in sexual activity with other men, whether they identify as gay, bisexual, or neither Omnisexual/pansexual: a person who feels love, affection and sexual attraction regardless of their gender identity or biological sex. Thus, pansexuality includes potential attraction to people (such as transgender individuals) who do not fit into the gender binary of male/female. Pomosexual: describe a person who avoids sexual orientation labels (not the same as asexual) Same gender loving (SGL) - coined for African American use by Cleo Manago in the early 1990s. -

Alice Walker's the Color Purple
Cultivating Black Lesbian Shamelessness: Alice Walker’s The Color Purple CHRISTOPHER S. LEWIS Ohio State University n her pivotal 1979 essay “Toward a Black Feminist Criticism,” Barbara Smith Ilamented the lack of black lesbian representation in U.S. literary criticism. She explained that “All segments of the literary world—whether establishment, progressive, Black, female, or lesbian—do not know, or at least act as if they do not know, that Black women writers and Black lesbian writers exist” (132). The unprecedented amount of writing by and/or about black lesbians that emerged in the 1970s and 1980s made the question and value of black lesbian writing’s existence of fundamental importance to African American literary studies in particular. Four seminal black lesbian texts—Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, Audre Lorde’s Zami: A New Spelling of My Name, Ntozake Shange’s Sassafrass, Cyprus, & Indigo, and Gloria Naylor’s The Women of Brewster Place—were published in 1982.1 Lesbian-identified writers Ann Allen Shockley, Cheryl Clarke, Alexis De Veaux, Jewelle Gomez, Audre Lorde, Pat Parker, and Alice Walker each began and developed their careers between 1970 and 1990.2 Writers like Octavia Butler, Gayl Jones, Jamaica Kincaid, Toni Morrison, Gloria Naylor, and Ntozake Shange who did not openly identify as lesbian or same-sex desiring also published writing in the 1970s and 1980s that explicitly represented black lesbian characters and/or shared black lesbian writing’s general interest in women’s same-sex relationships.3 These writers were at odds with major male writers of the 1960s and 1970s Black Arts Movement like Amiri Baraka and Eldridge Cleaver because they critiqued what E. -

Although research has long shown that women, people of color and low- income communities are more vulnerable to natural hazards, the disproportionate effects of Hurricane Katrina and subsequent federal and state disaster response efforts forced the national spotlight on the institutional and systemic nature of racism, classism and sexism. Using Black feminism and radical planning theory, two lenses that provides a comprehensive framework for understanding racism, classism and sexism, this article examines the concept and literature of social vulnerability. I argue while social vulnerability research has made significant contributions to planners’ understandings of disasters and inequity, it fails to center community knowledge, identify intersectional oppressions and name them as such and encourage community activism, all of which are keys to making meaningful change. Where black women were once in the vanguard of a political movement for radical change (Combahee Statement, for instance), addressing race, class, gender, and sexual orientation in a simultaneity of oppression and of consciousness of that oppression, challenging and pushing the edges, we can no longer claim that edge if our feminist politics becomes a matter of identity only. The women of the Combahee River Collective was a group of black lesbian feminists of the 1970s, who used their ethnicity to construct a carefully considered analysis of the simultaneity of oppression, a new concept then but one of the earliest theories that fledgling women’s studies students grasp and reiterate easily. -
Equity Glossary
This glossary is NOT intended to be an exhaustive list of every word and term used in our conversations about equity, diversity, and social justice. Over time the connotations and even denotations of these words may change; so, we will treat this glossary as an iterative reference point bearing in mind that while these definitions are useful at the present time, they may shift substantially in the none too distant future. The goal of this glossary, then, is to function as a reference that provides basic working definitions that allow us to enter into conversations that we, perhaps, felt unable to subs tantively enter into, previously, because some this terminology was unknown to us. Ableism: Prejudiced thoughts and discriminatory actions based on differences in physical, mental, and/or emotional ability; usually that of able‐bodied / minded persons against people with illness, disabilities, or less developed skills / talents. Accessibility: The extent to which a facility is readily approachable and usable by individuals with disabilities, particularly such areas as the personnel office, worksite and public areas. Adultism: Prejudiced thoughts and discriminatory actions against young people, in favor of older person(s). Adrogyne/Androgynous/Androgyny (n): 1. A person whose biological sex is not readily apparent, whether intentionally or unintentionally. 2. A person whose identity is between the two traditional genders. 3. A person who rejects gender roles entirely. Androgynous: Someone who reflects an appearance that is both masculine and feminine, or who appears to be neither or both a boy and a girl. Anti-Blackness (n): Advocate: Someone who speaks up for her/himself and members of his/her identity group; e.g., a woman who lobbies for equal pay for women. -

Likewise, Black women’s memoir and autobiography have been read for their illustrations of Black feminist politics, historical narratives, and intellectual histories. However, less attention has been paid to the specific role of embodiment in the liminal genres of Black queer hybrid memoir texts, including semi-autobiographical fiction and poetry, book-length memoir essay texts, and forms like Audre Lorde’s biomythography. My dissertation Afrekete’s Room: Mapping the Shape of Space and Narrative in Black Queer Women’s Writing intervenes in this conversation to argue that within these texts, Black queer women and trans people mediate and narrate embodied experiences in order to position Black queer bodies as potential sites of knowledge production about gender, blackness, erotics, and subjectivity.
