Limited Editions Autumn/Winter 2020 LIMITED EDITIONS Autumn/Winter 2020 LIMITED EDITIONS Autumn/Winter 2020 Our Limited Editions initiative allows us to offer our community a unique opportunity to acquire works by contemporary practitioners, all of whom have either exhibited with us or share a close working relationship with us. Artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Bridget Riley, Chris Ofili, Cindy Sherman and Grayson Perry have all created Editions that have ranged from objects, such as small sculptures and skateboards, to etchings, C-prints, neons and vinyl records. Many of our Limited Editions are available in our online shop. A curated selection can be viewed in person at the Serpentine Galleries and by appointment by contacting our team. Prices start at £25. All proceeds from the sale of Limited Editions directly supports the Serpentine’s programmes. Each sale helps keep the galleries open and free for all. Only the baddest man on TV, Eastenders Phil Mitchell! Actor Steve McFadden will be making a special appearance at Peterborough’s biggest sport and leisure event. Don’t tell anyone because we haven’t asked him yet but it’s hoped that Steve will host the Martial Arts World Record challenge for most participants, which takes place between 4 and 5pm. Master Parkers Serial Kickers (MPSK) will be leading the event and encouraging 500 participants to take up the challenge and become world record holders. Everyone is welcome. The more the merrier Also confirmed is GB Wheelchair Basketball star Sarah Grady Aged 7, Watford born Sarah Grady was hit by a virus that damaged her spinal cord; aged 13, the BSc Business and Sports Sciences graduate (Brunel University, 2005) first tried wheelchair basketball at the National Junior Games at Stoke Mandeville; and, a mere three years later, at just 16, she travelled across the world to Australia to represent Great Britain in the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. The next five years saw Sarah called up for her nation countless times: in addition to the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games, the GB #5 was also selected to compete at the World Championships 2002 (Kitakyushu, Japan) as well as the European Championships in 2003, winning bronze, and 2005. After taking time out from international basketball to have her son Josh, Sarah returned to the GB squad in November 2011 where she played her way into selection for her third Paralympic Games: London 2012.

  • Low-Power Lighting Technology
Low-Power Lighting Technology Researchers from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences have designed and tested a prototype cathodoluminescent lamp for general lighting. [27] A team of researchers affiliated with several institutions in Spain and the U.S. has announced that they have discovered a new property of light—self-torque. [26] When studying biological cells using optical tweezers, one main issue is the damage caused to the cell by the tool. Giovanni Volpe, University of Gothenburg, has discovered a new type of force that will greatly reduce the amount of light used by optical tweezers—and improve the study of all kinds of cells and particles. [25] The device, which works in the mesoscopic mass range for the first time, might not only be used to help solve fundamental problems in quantum mechanics, it might also find use in precision metrology applications. [24] Although previous research shows that metal nanoparticles have properties useful for various biomedical applications, many mysteries remain regarding how these tiny materials form, including the processes that generate size variations. [23] With a novel electrochemical biosensing device that identifies the tiniest signals these biomarkers emit, a pair of NJIT inventors are hoping to bridge this gap. [22] The dark skin pigment melanin protects against the sun's damaging rays by absorbing light energy and converting it to heat. [21] Wang, Bren Professor of Medical Engineering and Electrical Engineering, is using PAM to improve on an existing technology for measuring the oxygen-consumption rate (OCR) in collaboration with Professor Jun Zou at Texas A&M University.

In the late 19th century, two such mastodons were unearthed in southwestern Wisconsin and were purchased for the UW Geology Museum’s permanent collection. Over the course of a century, one mastodon find became Wisconsin’s most famous fossil, while the other was virtually forgotten. In late 2015, this composite skeleton celebrated its 100th year of display in the Geology Museum, and Carrie Eaton unveiled some exciting discoveries regarding its history. Eaton will talk about the rediscovery of a historic specimen, new developments since the story broke, and why its extinction shouldn’t prevent us from learning to love the mastodon. Striving to source our materials locally and responsibly, we design and create pieces that stand against throwaway culture. We were awarded the House & Garden 2020 Responsible Design Award and we are striving to live up to that standard. Each decision we make is committed to limiting our waste and carbon emissions and increasing our environmental awareness. 80% of what we make is produced in England and most is forged, blown, cast or built within 45 miles of our Head Office in Farnham, Surrey. We continually reinvent our pieces, and when we produce new designs, we launch small and considered collections, minimising the resources used in the origination and prototyping. Our Makers inherently embrace a sustainable approach in their making processes and our recycling scheme has reduced waste at Head Office by a staggering 82%. Our Tala Lighting collaboration has resulted in a range of high-quality LED light bulbs that are distributed at no extra charge with all our lighting pieces. This sustainable attitude is embraced from our design studio to our Upcycling Club.

  • The Novelist As Engineer
The Novelist as Engineer A thesis on credible engineering components of fiction novels (supplemented by an “engineering” fiction novel) by D R Stevens for the Masters Degree in Engineering (Hons) 2007 University of Western Sydney Dedication This thesis is dedicated to Professor Steven Riley who inspired the writing of the thesis in the first place and provided encouragement when motivation waned. Acknowledgement I acknowledge the assistance of Professor Steven Riley, Professor of Research, School of Engineering, University of Western Sydney. I also acknowledge Professor Leon Cantrell who gave significant and important advice particularly on the development of the supplementary novel, (called by the new genre name En-Fi) the title of which is “Amber Reins Fall”. Thanks also go to Dr Stephen Treloar, CEO of Cumberland Industries Limited, where I am the Director of Marketing and Social Enterprises. His contribution is through the scarce resource of time the company allowed me to formulate this thesis. Finally the thesis is dedicated in no small part to Caroline Shindlair who helped tremendously with the typing and construction of the actual documentation. Statement of Authentication The work presented in this thesis is, to the best of my knowledge and belief, is original except as acknowledged in the text. I hereby declare that I have not submitted this material, either in full or in part, for a degree at this or any other institution.
