Striving to source our materials locally and responsibly, we design and create pieces that stand against throwaway culture. We were awarded the House & Garden 2020 Responsible Design Award and we are striving to live up to that standard. Each decision we make is committed to limiting our waste and carbon emissions and increasing our environmental awareness. 80% of what we make is produced in England and most is forged, blown, cast or built within 45 miles of our Head Office in Farnham, Surrey. We continually reinvent our pieces, and when we produce new designs, we launch small and considered collections, minimising the resources used in the origination and prototyping. Our Makers inherently embrace a sustainable approach in their making processes and our recycling scheme has reduced waste at Head Office by a staggering 82%. Our Tala Lighting collaboration has resulted in a range of high-quality LED light bulbs that are distributed at no extra charge with all our lighting pieces. This sustainable attitude is embraced from our design studio to our Upcycling Club. We design each piece to be enjoyed by you and generations to come. The Upcycling Club is a Refurbishment and Part Exchange service, offering the opportunity to transform and give a new lease of life to your Porta Romana piece. From the beginning, the ambition was to create beautiful and inspiring pieces that would be loved. Good fortune came in finding skilled British craftspeople to create those designs. The Porta Romana style has continuously evolved to become a leading global brand and a critical ingredient in the world’s most beautiful houses, yachts and hotels. From sculptors to ceramicists, from lacquering to glazing, every expert hand and eye is focused on the crafting of something beautiful and enduring. That is our belief, and the hallmark of each unique Porta Romana piece. 3 3 BRITISH CRAFTSMANSHIP At Porta Romana we value design, craftsmanship and sustainability above all else. We work with exceptional Makers across many disciplines to turn our designs into reality. At the heart of Porta Romana, we celebrate local craftsmanship, with over 80% of what we make being produced in England. LAMPSHADE STUDIO At Porta Romana we strive for perfection in every aspect of our design. Our carefully selected linings have been created to give the right glow when lit, ensuring each silk, satin or velvet is considered individually. In line with our sustainable mission, we have brought our lampshade making in-house, allowing for greater creativity. 4 PAINTING STUDIO Since day one, the heart of Porta Romana has been our in-house painting studio, or as we call it, ‘the Workshop’. It is from here that simple metal, composite and wood is transformed and detailed to become one of our exquisite pieces. Over the decades, we have created and refined elaborate techniques to produce an array of finishes that can be added to any of our painted pieces. DESIGN STUDIO The Porta Romana design studio is led by Andrew Hills, our Creative Director. The team work closely throughout the design process, collaborating with Designers, Makers and our Painting Workshop to bring innovative designs to life. Over the years, the eclectic Porta Romana style has evolved. Our goal is for each and every one of our pieces to inspire and excite. 5 LAMPSHADE GLOSSARY There are a few details which are specific to our lampshade vocabulary and are explained here. CUSTOMERS OWN MATERIAL (COM) We can make any shade in your own fabric provided that we have seen and checked the suitability of your fabric in advance.
