Dear Friends,

The warm sun may encourage us to spend more time outdoors this month which means we often interact with more people in our churches and our community and so on.

If you look inside this month’s Chronicles you’ll see there is plenty to join in with, especially the ‘Summer in Clifton Week’. Do look at the village Facebook page.

Sadly some people are hurting and lonely inside as the summer season begins. Maybe it’s the first time without their loved one with them. Can we help and serve and be warm to each other as the sun is beginning to warm us, take heart from 1 Thessalonians 5:10-11 Jesu: died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Don’t be lonely this summer! Come along to All Saints church on a Sunday or during the week where you’ll receive a warm welcome to help you get to know more people, especially if you are new to the village

Where does the time go? We are well into the summer term of this academic year and as always this term is very, very, busy!

 There have been several Redbourne Sports Events where children across all key stages have been involved. This has included curling, tri-golf, quad kids and kwik cricket. Well done to all of the pupils for showing the school values and working together as a team.  Mr Beaumont has volunteered another year (must be over 16 years now!) to train our year 4 football team for the Henlow Football tournament. His commitment to the school after all these years and engaging the pupils with a great team spirit is greatly appreciated. Wishing the best of luck to all the pupils at the tournament on Friday 22nd June at Henlow Academy.  The book fair held in school sold nearly £500 worth of books of which the school got commission to spend on books and resources through Scholastic. Thank you for everyone’s support.  The Year 4’s visited the Hitchin Schools Museum and had a taste of what school life was like in Victorian times.  The Year 3’s had a day out at the Faith Tour where they got to find out more about different cultures and religions. This is very well organised and has been enjoyed by children and staff for many years.  We have had a Spelling Bee in school, where our best spellers compete in spelling out some VERY difficult words. Well done to the winners!  Parents from our year 1 and 2 classes had the opportunity to come in and have a school dinner with their child/ren. The children got very excited and it was lovely to see so many parents and relatives supporting this. We are in the second year of running our own kitchen which has generally proved to be a very positive experience.

Royal Wedding Fun was had by all at school the day before the Royal wedding with an afternoon tea party. The children decorated bunting and had juice and fairy cakes. It was lovely to celebrate at school such a happy event.

Transition Our year 4’s have a variety of transition events and days coming up to reassure them in preparation for their move to their new schools in September. We have very strong links with Henlow Academy. Many of our new pupils due to start in September attend Woodlands and as part of their transition they use one of our rooms two mornings a week for the Bluebirds Class. They are also invited to stay for lunch on the day they attend Bluebirds. We found this very successful last year and it certainly helped when they started with us in September.

Summer Fayre Our Maypole Dancing starts at 2pm on Friday 15th June followed by the Summer Fayre with BBQ, stalls and several activities opening after the dancing has finished at approximately 3.20pm. Let’s hope the weather is kind to us. Please come along and support this event to raise vital funds for the PTA and school. All funds raised at the moment will go towards replacing all of the computers in the ICT suite with far more user friendly laptops or tablets.

Dates Reminder The last day of school is Friday 20th July and we finish normal time at 3.20pm. Children are back in school on Wednesday 5th September. Poppy Collections

It will soon be Poppy Day, this year remembering 100 years since the end of the World War 1. If Clifton would like to keep a door to door collection I need some more volunteers.

If you can offer a couple of hours to help with the collection, please can you give me a ring. You will only need to do one road so it’s not too exhausting!

If I don’t have any more volunteers we will not be able to cover everywhere in Clifton. If you need someone to bring the poppies to you, please let me know and I will make sure someone comes to your house.

Thank you, Denise Panton 01462 632754

The summer term is in full swing and we have been enjoying the sunshine here at Woodlands. This is one of our busiest terms ever with children both in the main building and at our Bluebirds classroom where they begin to prepare for the transition to school.

We are looking forward to our two open days on Wednesday the 6th of June and Thursday the 7th of June. This is an opportunity for new parents to come and visit us and for our September children to finalise their sessions and meet the staff. If you are thinking of starting in September please contact us urgently to book your place on the open days as all visits must be booked in.

Future open days are on:  31st October and 1st November 2018 – these would be primarily for our January 2019 starters  20th February and 21st February 2019 – these would be primarily for our April 2019 starters

If your child turns 3 before September and you are looking at registering for the 30 hour funding please make sure you have your code before the term starts on the 1st of September. Codes that are obtained after this date are not valid for the autumn term.

Clifton WI

Linda began the meeting with a minute’s silence in memory of Kathleen Nott, a former member of the WI. She then welcomed 49 members to the meeting. A special welcome was given to Pauline, our newest member. There was a message from Barbara to say thank you for the flowers that she had been sent. We sang Jerusalem and the minutes of the April meeting were read, agreed and signed. Linda pointed out the display of all the crafts from meetings earlier in the year. There were beautiful examples of cushions, birthday cards, bookmarks, and patchwork. Well done to all our exhibitors. Sponsor forms for the walk in aid of St John’s hospice are available. Those going on the canal trip were asked to choose and pay for either a cream tea or ploughman’s lunch. Arlesey WI is celebrating their 100-year-old birthday and have invited guests from nearby WI’s. Two of our members will be representing Clifton WI at this event. Linda showed us a beautifully decorated leaf made by Val, embroidered with the name of our WI. This will be sent to WI House. Our leaf will join others from all the regional WI’s to make a tree for the banner at WI House to celebrate the centenary. County are advertising Petanque sessions. We have a team keen to take part. There was also a request for anyone interested in walking netball to give their names to Linda. Linda read out our chosen resolution for mental health which was agreed unanimously. Iris will now share our thoughts at the WI conference in Cardiff. The treasurer’s report was given. Iris handed out birthday cards. Chris and Sally collected the fish and chips while other members settled down to a cryptic quiz of local Bedfordshire towns. The fish and chips were very welcome when they arrived. Thank you Sally for organising them. The meeting finished at 9pm for tea and coffee and the raffle was drawn. The next meeting will be on June 6th. Tea hostesses for the evening are Mary Newman, Audrey Steeds and Susie Welch. Visitors are welcome for a £4 fee. Ruth Callard (01462815482)

The weather was quite pleasant but with a cold wind, the course was hilly and very tiring and the greens were fast and difficult to read. Samuel Whitbread Academy Students are busily revising for their upcoming exams at Samuel Whitbread Academy (SWA). The English and maths session for Year 11 parents was also well attended recently, with over 100 parents coming along to hear how the new GCSEs differ from previous years and how they can support their children through the exams. The Gold DofE students took part in their five day expedition which has to include four nights under canvass. The students all successfully completed nearly 40 miles whilst carrying all their food, clothes and tents in sweltering conditions. Mr Edwards said they were a credit to the school and coped incredibly well with the hot conditions, although there were a few red faces by the end! The Year 9 students also attended the Maths Challenge in Cambridge, and along with students from Henlow, Robert Bloomfield and Etonbury, they came back with an impressive 7th, 10th and 27th out of 32 schools. This is an amazing performance against the strongest schools in the entire region, many of these being independent. The BEST musical, Alice in Wonderland, staged three performances to packed out crowds. The lower and middle school cast included students from many of the schools in our pyramid, with SWA students acting as choreographers, singing and dance coaches during rehearsals and on the night. The future certainly looks very bright for Performing Arts and who knows, maybe there’s another within the cast! The latest National Cup winners representing SWA are Mambo, Dee, Frenchy and Charisma - who along with their riders Ewan, Jennie, Annie and Caitlin won the National Equestrian Schools’ Association Show Jumping Championships. The equestrian team was only set up by Miss Wisson in September and immediately went on to become Bedfordshire champions last term, which meant they represented the county at the national championships at Bury Farm in Buckinghamshire. The team of four were up against 37 other schools, all county champions in their own right and from all across the country. SWA were crowned national champions – with Caitlin also winning an individual 5th fastest time out of over 120 riders. This is fantastic achievement and a perfect platform to build upon for the equestrian team which has already has 14 members and no doubt more to come! If you are a walker, runner. dog walker, cyclist or bird watcher this affects you. In 1989 the Government funded a scheme for farmers to allow permissive walks over their land, which weren't waymarked walks. Our local farmer, Mr. Don Brace, applied for this scheme and was successful in allowing his land at the end of the Baulk for recreational pastimes. Up to 200 people a day take advantage of this area which is maintained by Mr. Brace. The agreement runs out in September 2019, and any new agreement will not be funded by the government. The new scheme considers this access as damaging to wildlife and the environment!! If a new scheme is taken up they want it to be voluntarily run! This is not an option which means that the area will not be available to the general public. The Clifton Residents Association backs his case 100%. We are asking all residents, and outside walkers, to lobby their MPs about this, and we are proposing to open a petition to keep this important community access available. In this day and age where every area is being developed, we need countryside open access, so please back this proposal. Comments as usual to [email protected]
