OSCARS HUGH JACKMAN Ever been skinny-dipping YOUR in citrus infused waters? HOST Hugh Jackman may be funny, but he’s no comedian

So what do we think of Hugh Jackman as the host of this year’s Oscars? It makes sense. Excluding beloved presenter Billy Crystal, who hosted in 2004, a cadre of comedians — Jon Stewart, Ellen DeGeneres, Chris Rock and Steve Martin — have MCd the show for the past six years, and while their often B:10.75”

erudite and sarcastic humour was a hit T:10.5” S:10” with some, they didn’t exactly speak to the worldwide masses who want the show to be an entertaining and upbeat celebration of Hollywood. (Of course, that’s not easy to do when art-house flicks such as No Country for Old Men, Crash and Million Dollar Baby keep winning Best Picture.) That’s why the sexy, effervescent — yet manly, don’t forget manly — Jackman fits in. Here’s a guy who has hosted the Tony Awards three times, he’s a Broadway veteran who can sing and dance, and, most importantly, viewers from around the world know who he is, as opposed to, say, the host of a late-night American cable comedy show (not that there’s anything wrong with that). What’s really interesting is that the Academy has continually shied away from having someone like Jackman host the show. The Oscars have traditionally been hosted by funny men — Bob Hope did it 16 times (alone or with co-hosts), Billy Crystal got the call eight times and Johnny Carson handled the duties five times. The last time a bona fide movie star, in his prime, hosted the event by himself was way back in 1949 when then-box office star Robert Montgomery Ever tried new gum? did the honours. —IR Stimulate your senses 22 FAMOUS FEBRUARY 2009 © 2008 Wm. INTERVIEW DAKOTA FANNING Sweet

On the eve of her 15th birthday, child star Dakota Fanning talks about voting for the Oscars, starring in the stop-motion 3D fantasy Coraline, and getting15 all punked up for Push BY MARNI WEISZ

t’s a cold and rainy December afternoon in Los Angeles and Dakota Fanning has just gotten home from school. “It’s the last week before winter break so there’s not much homework to do,” she says over the phone, “so I’m just relaxing.” That’s good, she’ll need her rest come February. Not only does the star of 19 movies — including War of the Worlds, Dreamer, Charlotte’s Web and The Secret Life of Bees — turn 15 on February 23rd, she also stars in two of the month’s biggest movies. There’s Coraline, the first stop-motion animated movie ever shot entirely in 3D. Fanning is the voice of the title character, a girl who finds a door to an alternate universe in her bedroom wall, and meets Ianother version of her family on the other side. And then there’s Push, a dark-edged superhero movie that takes place in Hong Kong. Similar to X-Men or Hellboy, Push’s world is populated with outcasts born with supernatural abilities. Some, including Fanning’s character Cassie, are Watchers, they see into the future and record their visions in drawings. A punky Dakota Fanning Others, like Nick (Chris Evans), are Movers, they have telekinetic powers so can move objects with their teams with Chris Evans for minds. And others still are Pushers and can place thoughts in other people’s heads. Government factions the sci-fi action pic Push are trying to capture the mutants to use their powers as weapons, but Cassie, Nick and a Pusher named Kira (Camilla Belle) won’t go down without a fight. Oh, there’s one more reason this is a big month for Fanning. The Academy Awards. No, she wasn’t nominated — she gets to vote. In 2006, Fanning became the youngest member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, an honour that comes with full voting privileges. In fact, the 14-year-old’s plan for this evening is to go downstairs, turn on the fireplace, and watch some of the screeners Oscar hopefuls have been bombarding her with all month. continued

THE GOODS HOTPLAY Vin Diesel is on the road again for Wheelman BY SCOTT GARDNER

Wheelman PC, PS3, XBOX 360 eputable sources define a wheelman as “a professional driver who excels at high-performance maneuvering, chase, pursuit, evasion and high-speed driving.” Real-world Rdefinitions add this key detail: “... and who typically works for underworld figures.” In other words: the perfect videogame hero. In this driving/action title, that hotshot driver has the imposing look and rumbling cadences of actor Vin Diesel. The actor stars as Milo Burik — an undercover agent on a mission to infiltrate criminal gangs in a beautifully rendered Barcelona. Wheelman, however, is not your typical movie-based game...mostly because there’s no movie. Announced in 2006, it was intended to support a Diesel-ish action flick of the same name, which has since quietly disappeared. Happily the game lives on, and it’s better for the loss, Killzone 2 X-Blades since the setting, story and action sequences are now wholly original. And like that title, both vistas and characters are and magical powers, all Wheelman is co-created by Tigon Studios — the star’s own videogame detailed and lifelike.
