  • The Magnetic Fields: 50 Song Memoir World Premiere of a Life in 50 Songs
For Immediate Release 3 August 2016 Contact: Jodi Joseph Director of Communications 413.664.4481 x8113 [email protected] The Magnetic Fields: 50 Song Memoir World premiere of a life in 50 songs NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS — Stephin Merritt, the master songsmith behind The Magnetic Fields’ 69 Love Songs, returns with the full band for a 2-week residency at MASS MoCA that culminates in the world premiere of a staged performance of their new Nonesuch Records album, 50 Song Memoir, an album celebrating Merritt’s first half-century on the planet. Merritt and band perform two distinct programs of new songs — one for every year of his life — with a seven- person band playing 50 instruments from his eclectic collection. This remarkable show recounts his five decades on planet Earth, from his conception by hippies on a houseboat in St. Thomas to his current position as one of America’s greatest living songwriters. The world premiere performance takes place in the Hunter Center, during which the entire album will be played over two nights: Songs 1-25 on Friday, November 18, and songs 26-50 on Saturday, November 19. Although Merritt has several musical projects, including Future Bible Heroes and the 6ths, it is his orchestral synth-pop group The Magnetic Fields that has become a bona fide euphonic sensation over the past 25 years. Most noted for its iconic 1999 three-disc album 69 Love Songs, the band has cultivated a vast repertoire of timeless masterpieces over ten albums. At MASS MoCA, The Magnetic Fields’ two- day performance kicks off its 2016-2017 tour.

Front man, composer, and lyricist Stephin Merritt was born in Yonkers, New York, likely around 1966, though his biographical details are sketchy and he will not publicly reveal his birthdate. A classically trained musician, he also had experience recording his own music on a four-track by his early teens. He attended film school and has even scored films. Around 1990, while living in Boston, Merritt teamed up with college friends Sam Davol (cellist and flautist), John Woo (guitarist), and Claudia Gonson (pianist and drummer, as well as sometime vocalist and band manager) to form the Magnetic Fields as a vehicle for Merritt's prodigious songwriting talent. Their first record, Distant Plastic Trees, was released in the United Kingdom later that year. The Fields' initial outings also featured vocalist Susan Amway interpreting Merritt's often brooding and vaguely confessional lyrics. On later records, Merritt began singing his own material, though he still frequently has other vocalists interpret his work. Indeed, such vocal variation is a significant feature of his recorded output.

Bill English will direct, Erika Chong Shuch will choreograph and Robert Moreno will be music director. The play will also include puppets created by Chris White, costumes by Valera Coble, and light design by Michael Oesch. Poor bored Coraline. She's left to rattle 'round her perpetually distracted, workaholic parents' house all by her lonesome. But late one night, her dreams of a better reality come true as she opens a big, carved, wooden door at the far end of the drawing room and passes into a perfect replica of her own world. When she's greeted there by a vastly loving Other Mother and a kindly Other Father, she's thrilled! But as the rats start to creep from the floorboards, and the way home becomes increasingly unclear, Coraline begins to suspect that, perhaps, all is not as perfect as it seems..

  • Prageeta Sharma on Writing Through Grief – the Creative Independent

Prageeta Sharma on writing through grief Do factors in your life compete with your ability to be a poet, or are you always a poet? I believe I’m always a poet. I believe poetry has functioned as a filter of seeing the world, the way it allows me to understand my brain and my thinking patterns. I do like to think about being a poet all the time, because I think it’s a liberating feeling to think that I have a filter that allows me, through language, to see the world in a certain way. Do you write every day? I wish I did. Two years ago, I was keeping a dream diary of every time my late husband, Dale, appeared in a dream. I would write it down. That is something that I did, but then I took the book and put it in a safety deposit box. I think I made it mysterious for myself, and I made it inaccessible, so that I can actually mark time. After Dale died, I couldn’t remember our marriage at all for three months. People say that’s common, that you don’t remember anything when you’re in shock. I wanted to leave it in its own space. I think I have a little chapbook out of that. I wanted some time to pass, so that I had some distance from what that looked like. Right now, I’m in a different stage of healing.

In a sense, the 1990s "were" the decade of the singer songwriter, as more and more artists decided to go "solo" rather than look for a band. Both the technology (that allowed individuals to arrange their own compositions) and the loose networking of the post-punk generation (that favored more fluid partnerships) helped increase the number of musicians who recorded simply under their own name. In general, singer-songwriters of the 1990s tended to be more subdued and humbler than in the 1980s and in the 1970s. Their masters were Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, not Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen. One of the most influential styles of the 1990s was the moody and depressed one pioneered by Chris Isaak, Smog and American Music Club in San Francisco. It spread like a disease and almost became a stand-alone genre. Bleak dirges were strummed everywhere. Georgia's Vic Chesnutt (2), confined to a wheelchair, shared with Smog the honor of having pioneered the style.
