West of Rome, 1993
Debriefing: The music and art of Vic Chesnutt: "West of Rome", West of Rome, 1993 ... Page 1 of 2 "West of Rome", West of Rome, 1993 New West Records The title track from one of Vic's most celebrated albums is bittersweet for me today. Mark Linkous, of Sparklehorse fame, committed suicide this past weekend, in Knoxville, TN. Not only was he a fantastic musician, an artistic genius, and one of my favorite all time performers, but he did a amazing cover of West of Rome , for the Sweet Relief 2 compilation. Ironically, the last time I ever saw Mark, he and Vic and I were chatting about this specific track. It was in Asheville, NC. I had mentioned to Vic that it was the only song off of the album West Of Rome that I had never heard him perform. He told me that he hadn't played the song in years, but would try and work out an arrangement. At that point, Mark very humbly offered that if I wanted to hear a 'terrible' version that he had one on the Sweet Relief compilation. I sort of laughed and said that it was a fantastic cover and that it was my favorite track on that specific album. Afterwards, Mark and I sat together and watched Vic perform his magic. That was February 2009. I never saw either of them again after that night. West of Rome was inspired, but not directly, by the book of the same name by John Fante. The book, which features two novellas, is about a father's reflections on his own life and that of his children. -

I was, however, entirely ignorant of the work of Vic Chesnutt. This slim but substantive volume is a memoir of Hersh’s professional relationship and friendship with Chesnutt during the ‘90s & ‘00s | | "The book's great sadness is matched by the skill and vitality of Hersh's writing; it will make treasured and troubled reading for fans of Chesnutt and the author alike. " (Kirkus s 2015-06-01) "Don't Suck, Don't Die is not only "Friend, asshole, angel, mutant," singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt "came along and made us gross and broken people seem...I dunno, cooler, I guess." A quadriplegic who could play only simple chords on his guitar, Chesnutt recorded 17 critically acclaimed albums before his death in 2009, including About to Choke, North Star Deserter, and At the Cut. -
Singer-Songwriter Jesse Winchester Here Friday
Singer-songwriter Jesse Winchester here Friday BY GEORGE VARGA SEPTEMBER 8, 2010 JESSE WINCHESTER Not many musicians can simultaneously make Elvis Costello choke up and bring Neko Case to tears with an unadorned solo acoustic performance of a single song. But that’s exactly what veteran troubadour Jesse Winchester did last fall in New York when he sang his wonderfully poignant ballad about two teenagers in love, “Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding,” a standout number from his enchanting 2009 album, “Love Filling Station.” You can watch it here: http:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uKGWpqnS8E%20 The setting was Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater, where Costello’s Sundance TV music series, “Spectacle,” filmed its first two seasons in front of loudly appreciative audiences. Louisiana native Winchester — who appeared on an episode alongside Costello, Case, Sheryl Crow and Ron Sexsmith — quietly stole the show with that song and an equally spare but stunning version of “The Brand New Tennessee Waltz,” an understated classic from his 1970 debut album. “Doing ‘Spectacle’ has been a big boost for my career,” said Winchester, who kicks off a five- city California tour here Friday night at the all-ages AMSD Concerts (formerly Acoustic Music San Diego) in Normal Heights. “I’m working at least twice as much as I used to. But I’m not really well known, so ‘twice as much’ for me is still not the same as for a really popular act.” In 2007, Winchester received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Composers, Artists and Publishers. That he is not a household name stems from a simple twist of fate. -

Tr iggers and Trash Heaps (stairwell demo) "What makes (Will Johnson) such a phenomenal lyricist is that he opts for the simplest language when painting an abstract picture." -- Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie in the New Yo rk Times "It's unforgettable in a Neil Young or Jeff Tweedy kind of way… As multifarious as the indie rock canon it's practically everything: from the South, in the basement, smoking pot, on the porch, plugging in, plucking soft and clocking out. It's a hootenanny of sweetly weathered proportions, free-wheeling clap-alongs and perfectly boozy balladry - not to mention ass kicking pop songs about rotary wheels and shotgun shells. Love You Just the Same is what a trucker cap would sound like if it could sing. Oh, and play violin." -- Magnet "HOT LIST! Oct 2003 - Country twang with a pinch of emo, held together by Will Johnson's raspy, searching voice. It's hearty, stick-to-your-ribs fare that makes you proud to be an American." -- Rolling Stone "These resonant fables of half-loved underdogs, essentially preposterous scenarios reported with apocalyptic seriousness, call to mind the last two Flaming Lips discs... the band hugely rawks here in an unprecedented approximation of their live show, often summoning the moldy hearts of Mould and Hart. -
Historic Third Ward
Approximate boundaries: N-E. Clybourn St; S-E. Erie St; E-Lake Michigan; W-Milwaukee River DOWNTOWNHistoric Third Ward NEIGHBORHOOD DESCRIPTION A high proportion of blocks in the Third Ward border a waterway. On the east is Lake Michigan. The Milwaukee River also runs through the Ward and connects to the Menomonee River at the western section of the neighborhood. The area has a lovely Riverwalk. Most of the buildings are massive brick structures. Many of these had been warehouses in other incarnations and now house condos and shops. The mainly neoclassical buildings have ornamentation from the Victorian Gothic through the Art Deco eras. While the streets of the Historic Third Ward have few trees, the blocks are seasonally adorned with filled planters and flower baskets. Artwork and cultural centers are always within glancing distance. See photos below. HISTORY The Historic Third Ward has experienced many rebirths. What is known today as an upscale, trendy neighborhood by most Milwaukeeans, was something much different in the past. Early populations The major Indian nations that were settled in and around the Third Ward area when the Europeans arrived were the Menomonie and the Ho-Chunk. Near the Ward, on Jones Island and in the Menomonee Valley, were the Potawatomi. The fur traders followed the Indian settlements, and most of these were French, French Canadian, and Metis populations. One individual involved in the fur trade was Solomon Juneau, who would become Milwaukee’s first mayor. His wife was part Menomonie. He was also a large investor in real estate and was responsible for surveying much of the land in the Ward. -

Carefully Pieced Together Around Feist
FEIST ‘Let It Die’ is very much a voice album in close up, “eye to eye and ear to ear”. Carefully pieced together around Feist’s seductive and jhai* voice, the album forms the missing link between ye old folk (storytelling), the Brill building era (the quest for the hook), doo-wop (melody and mood) and minimal modern pop arrangements. Like line drawings as opposed to detailed paintings, these songs leave you space to fill in the emotional blanks. Its lack of complication makes ‘Let It Die’ standout from much of today’s musical offerings; put simply, a beautiful slice of sonic escapism to illustrate and interrupt the little moments that together tell us stories. A history not lacking in variety, the Canadian born singer has accomplished much in her few tender years, so for those inquisitive journo types, here are the last few years in a nut shell… “My first proper gig was supporting the Ramones at an outdoor festival when my high school punk band won a battle of the bands contest. We played together for about 5 years. I moved to Toronto from Calgary to see a musical injuries doctor, after losing my voice on my first cross-Canadian tour when I was 19. Not knowing a soul in Toronto I spent 6 months in a dark basement apartment with a 4 track and having been told not to sing I got a guitar to do it for me. A couple of years later I was playing guitar in By Divine Right and toured for 6 months opening for the Tragically Hip, mostly in front of stadium crowds of around 40,000. -
Introduction from Paul Whiteman, to Barry White, Man
Introduction From Paul Whiteman, to Barry White, Man This monograph explores a long- standing tradition of merging pop- ular music idioms with lush string orchestrations, big- band instrumentation, traditional symphonic instruments, and other markers of musical sophistica- tion, glamour, spectacle, theatricality, and epic or “cinematic” qualities. I call such deluxe—or “luxe”—pop arrangements and performance events “con- spicuous symphonization.” This phrasing underscores entertainment par- allels to Thorstein Veblen’s notion of “conspicuous consumption,” wherein luxury goods and services are employed for displays of social status, wealth, or cultural sophistication. A colloquialism with a similar social meaning is “bling,” a hip- hop slang term referring to displays of an ostentatious life- style of lavish and excessive spending. Conspicuous consumption and bling display are both tied to the purpose of inspiring envy. However, with bling, there is an aversion to melting- pot uniformity in that bling displays involve ironic stylistic tensions through juxtapositions of “low” vernacular/pop cul- ture and the high- status symbols of social power, whether real or perceived. Similar qualities permeate the US “luxe pop” repertories and events explored in this book. This music further reflects important changes in the character and aesthetic discourses of American culture and entertainment. Across the twentieth century, the United States experienced unprece- dented economic prosperity, resulting in middle- class expansion, particularly following -
The YA Novel in the Digital Age by Amy Bright a Thesis
The YA Novel in the Digital Age by Amy Bright A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Amy Bright, 2016 Abstract Recent research by Neilsen reports that adult readers purchase 80% of all young adult novels sold, even though young adult literature is a category ostensibly targeted towards teenage readers (Gilmore). More than ever before, young adult (YA) literature is at the center of some of the most interesting literary conversations, as writers, readers, and publishers discuss its wide appeal in the twenty-first century. My dissertation joins this vibrant discussion by examining the ways in which YA literature has transformed to respond to changing social and technological contexts. Today, writing, reading, and marketing YA means engaging with technological advances, multiliteracies and multimodalities, and cultural and social perspectives. A critical examination of five YA texts – Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, Libba Bray’s Beauty Queens, Daniel Handler’s Why We Broke Up, John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, and Jaclyn Moriarty’s The Ghosts of Ashbury High – helps to shape understanding about the changes and the challenges facing this category of literature as it responds in a variety of ways to new contexts. In the first chapter, I explore the history of YA literature in order to trace the ways that this literary category has changed in response to new conditions to appeal to and serve a new generation of readers, readers with different experiences, concerns, and contexts over time. -
