Åtman/Anåtman in Buddhism and Its Implication for the Wisdom Tradition by Nancy Reigle Does Christianity believe in reincarnation? Of course it does not. Yet, students of the Wisdom Tradition may seek to find evidence that early Christians did accept reincarnation. Similarly in Buddhism. Does Buddhism believe in the åtman, the permanent self? Certainly the Buddhist religion does not. Yet, there is evidence that the Buddha when teaching his basic doctrine of anåtman, no-self, only denied the abiding reality of the personal or empirical åtman, but not the universal or authentic åtman. The Wisdom Tradition known as Theosophy teaches the existence of “An Omnipresent, Eternal, Boundless, and Immu- table PRINCIPLE,” 1 often compared to the Hindu åtman, the universal “self,” while Buddhism with its doctrine of anåtman, “no-self,” is normally understood to deny any such universal principle. In regard to Buddhism, however, there have been several attempts to show that the Buddha did not deny the exist- ence of the authentic åtman, the self.2 Only one of these attempts seems to have been taken seriously by scholars3; namely, the work of Kamaleswar Bhattacharya. His book on this subject, written in French, L’Åtman-Brahman dans le Bouddhisme ancien, was published in Paris in 1973; and an English translation of this work, The Åtman-Brahman in Ancient Buddhism, was published in 2015.4 It is here that he set forth his arguments for the existence of the Upanißadic åtman in early Buddhism. The Stages of Bhakti. Odessa. 2004. Lecture 1. En. I will speak a little about the opening verses of the tenth chapter of the “Bhagavad-gita”. And the reason why I decided to choose this topic ... they are numerous. One of them is that we often underestimate the “Bhagavad-gita”, the fact that we open it and think, “I know everything. Everything is clear – I am not this body, Krishna is God”. You can close the “Bhagavad-gita” and put it on the shelf. But actually, the greatest minds of the mankind have read and re-read the “Bhagavad-gita” over and over again. And we need to do the same, because in the process of such repetition our desire for Krishna becomes stronger and stronger. Krishna Himself explains that in the twelfth chapter of the “Bhagavad-gita” where He says that abhyasa, this method (abhyasa means repetition or practice), abhyasa, or the practice, the constant repetition is the method that will make our desire stronger. That is the very fan which we use to kindle the spark of our desire to go to Krishna. it is impossible to understand where from this spark has flown into our hearts. Only God knows where from! By causeless mercy, we have met the devotees, and the devotees, Srila Prabhupada's books, have instilled in our heart a spark of faith. Abhyasa or the constant practice of repetition allows that spark to ignite, allows us to turn it into a flame. That is one of the reasons why we should go back to the “Bhagavad-gita” again and again and try to read in it what we have not seen before, constantly comparing it with our own experience. -

But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being. -

Before analyzing Siva Diksha which was conducted by Rajaraja I Chola it is worthwhile to understand meaning; types; secrets and stages of Siva Diksha. Diksha is a Sanskrit word moreover, Diksha (दीक्षा) is often mentioned and it is a Devanagari script. Diksha is also spelled as Diksha, Deeksha or Deeksa in common usage. Most of them translated Diksha as a "preparation or consecration for a religious ceremony.1 Diksha is giving of a mantra or an initiation by the Vedic teacher (Guru) in Guru– Shishya of our tradition of Indian religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Diksha is given in a one-to-one ceremony, and typically includes the taking on of a serious spiritual discipline.2 The word Diksha is a combination of two words dā + kṣi. The word Diksha derived from the Sanskrit root dā ("to give") plus kṣi ("to destroy") or alternately from the verb root dīkṣ ("to consecrate").3 The Siva Diksha is a ritual which initiates interested, committed, dedicated & sincere seekers to the most sacred Pancha (Five) Akshari (Letter) Maha Mantra. This Maha Mantra was mentioned in Holy Scriptures. Thus, the Siva Diksha is uplifting individuals, and the society at large. -

The eagerness of a section of devotees to see a female blessed as diksha guru in ISKCON posthaste is akin “affirmative action” in the USA, as well as the reservation system for the backward classes here in India. Call it “social engineering”, if you want. The mood is “let’s have a token woman diksha guru” to affirm that women are equal to men in ISKCON. This arises from the egalitarian outlook of modern Western society and the various equal rights movements so popular in the Western world, and is an ideology that runs contrary to Srila Prabhupadas’s teachings and the ancient culture he was eager to transplant from India, worldwide. To begin with, when a woman can’t wear the sacred thread – the yajnopavita – then how can she give one as a part of initiation? Srila Prabhupada followed the system of initiation introduced by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur. Srila Saraswati Thakur introduced the brahmin thread – yajnopavita – for persons not born in brahmana families. Traditionally, brahmanas, kshatriyas, and vaishyas were initiated with the yajnopavita in order to study the vedas and then perform vedic sacrifices. They are the “dvijas” – the twice born, as upanayanam (“bringing closer”) samskara was performed in their communities.
