What can I say, it is always a treat when our SARA members unite!

Our 2nd Quarter Board Meeting took place on July 13, 2019 at the offi ces of Fong & Chan Architects in San Francisco, CA. A huge thank you to Dennis Dong for making the arrangements for our Board Members to have a beautiful space to hold our meeting.

The offi ce of Fong & Chan was breath-taking, the elegance of its conference room and their state of the art work spaces lent itself for the perfect setting to gather and discuss all the topics on our packed agenda. What was real neat was checking out the offi ce walls covered with SARA awards proudly displayed for all to see. Jason Wu and Taihui Li graciously assisted us during our meeting and took time out of their Saturday morning to make sure everything ran smoothly.

It was great to see a lot of the familiar faces, but we certainly did miss those who could not attend. The SARA National website has advanced and Doug Joyce, FARA shared with us an incredible teaser of what is in store. Duane Baker is spear-heading membership & social media in full force and we are eager to see the immense growth that will occur. Our 63rd Annual Conference & Design Awards are going to be a hit, we are all excited and have marked the dates in our calendars. Be sure to register early to secure your spot at our annual celebration. All information can be found on our website https://www.sara-national.org/ .

After our meeting, a few of us hit the town to see the sights San Francisco has to off er. We made stops at Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Buena Vista Coff ee Shop, Alamo Park, saw the famous Painted Ladies, the most crooked street in San Fran, Union Square and more.

We are in preparation for our 3rd Quarter Board Meeting, which will be taking place in Chicago, IL on Saturday, November 2, 2019 (Our Annual Assembly to follow). We are all looking forward to the direction in which SARA is traveling on, we've been lucky to have so many on our National Board who truly care and want to see SARA reach new heights. It was a marvelous weekend and sharing special moments with everyone just confi rms how special SARA is.

Reynolds SARA Code Consultant

Deciding which door hardware (lock set) is the minimum required by the code can be confusing. When is panic hardware required? When is handicapped hardware required? When can I use a time-delay release locking system? What about security locks? The intent of the code is to make is to ensure that there is clear and unobstructed exit component available in case of an emergency.

PANIC HARDWARE - It appears that architects and builders think this hardware is required on “every” exit door. In fact, Section 1008.1.10 of the International Building Code only requires it in spaces of 50 or more occupants of use groups Assembly, Educational and High Hazard. (The criteria is both occupant load and use group.) The National Electrical Code also must have panic hardware for electric equipment rooms with over 1,200 amp. service or greater than 6 ft. wide. The “push pad” type is permitted for balanced doors.

IT IS NOT required on every stairway exit door in an offi ce building or in mercantile, where you often set it installed, unless that is an A, E or H use group within that occupancy. That is just a waste of the owners construction dollars to install them where they are not required. Remember - - The building code is a minimum standard.

LOCKSET HARDWARE - Security is always a problem for building owners. They want to keep thieves out and the code wants everyone inside to be able to exit the building simply and safely. So what is the compromise? The fi rst principle is that no matter how many locks you have on an Exit door, they all must open with a single operation. That means you cannot have four dead bolts on a door that require four separate actions to unlock and open. Here is what you can do:

• ACCESS CONTROLLED DOORS - Electronic hardware overrides the door locks when fi re and sprinkler alarms activate or loss of power. Includes time delay release systems.

• SECURITY GRILLS (Horizontal or Vertical operation) - Permitted in B, F, M and S use groups, must remain open when occupied. If two exits are required, only one can be a security grill. • As a SARA member you can contact Kelly P. Reynolds for FREE telephone code consulting.
