Sponsor, Corporate & Life Friends will receive tickets by mail as they would for our Spring and Fall Concerts. These tickets are good for the full three day event. Dauphin Co. does not sell single day tickets - only tickets for the full three day Festival. Many of our supporters have expressed concern that the new $50 fee ($60 at the gate) for tickets is too much to pay if you are only interested in the Friday night event. If you are a member in good standing in CPFJ and are interested only in the Friday night event, we have been approved to sell single day tickets for $30 to our members only. Regular Members may purchase only one ticket, patrons and donors may purchase two tickets at the $30 price. These tickets must be purchased in advance! You must call the office (717-540-1010) or order online (www.friendsofjazz.org) in order to get this opportunity - this ticket includes all music and wine tastings for the day. The event is held at Ft. Hunter Park just north of Harrisburg and is a rain or shine event - they have a circus-sized tent that will provide cover in case of inclement weather. There is free parking at the park. Remember to bring a chair or blanket as there are none available on site. There are several food vendors as well as twelve area vintners offering free tastings to ticket holders. No outside alcohol is allowed in the park, but you may bring your own picnic basket. Please contact us if you have questions - this is a good time to renew your membership in order to take advantage of this offer.

The Bobby Broom Organi-Sation:. Bobby Broom was born in Harlem in 1961 and raised on New York City’s Upper West Side. At age 12, he became seized with the idea of playing guitar, and began studying seriously, taking lessons, at first, in folk music. By the time that he was 14, he was gigging professionally with Al Haig and Walter Bishop Jr. Among Bobby Broom’s recordings as a leader is his trio’s 2001 release, “Stand!”, a recording of interpretations of 60s and 70s pop and soul classics. Broom’s first release of exclusively original compositions was “Upper West Side Story” in 2012. His album, “My Shining Hour,” (2014) breathes all kinds of fresh perspectives into the standards of the venerable American Songbook. An avid educator, he teaches in Chicago for the Ravinia Festival Organization’s community outreach Jazz Scholar Program. . Originally from Philadelphia, Ben Paterson studied both classical and jazz music before moving to the great city of Chicago. There he spent years performing and working with the top musicians in town, absorbing the unique blend of Jazz and Blues that can only be found in the Windy City. Now re-located to New York, Ben is poised to bring his unique talents to a wider audience, combining hard-swinging grooves and melodic improvisation with an impeccable touch. He has recorded with Johnny O’Neal, Red Holloway, Eldee Young, Bria Skonberg, Peter Bernstein, & Ed Cherry. . . A native of Chicago, Illinois, Kobie Watkins began as a small child listening and watching his father playing drums in the church. He received his Masters of Music from Northwestern University in 2003. Kobie holds a long list of great musicians he has played and recorded with - jazz legend Sonny Rollins, Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Christian McBride, Jim Hall, Arturo Sandoval, Ira Sullivan, Roy Haynes, & Roy Hargrove. . Jonathan Michel: L’ouverture - honoring the music of Haiti . Born and raised in Waterbury, CT, Jonathan Michel was first introduced to music by his father at the age of 4. Jon moved to Philadelphia in 2005 where he quickly immersed himself in the demanding bandstand education that the city has to offer. Since 2010 Jon has been based out of New York City. Jon has been a member of Grammy award winning R&B star Billy Paul’s band since 2007. In his career he has performed and toured with many great artists and leaders in music: Orrin Evans, Aaron Goldberg, Melanie JB Charles, Paul Bollenbeck, Johnny O’Neal and Tim Warfield to name a few. In addition to co-leading an original music project the L.X.G., Jonathan is also building a portfolio as a composer and producer. . Melanie Charles is a Brooklyn-born singer-songwriter, actress, and flutist of Haitian descent with creative fluidity spanning jazz, soul, experimental, and Haitian roots music. She is a 2010 Vocal Jazz Performance graduate of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. She has worked with artists such as Laura Izibor, Nicola Conte (with Jose James and Gregory Porter). Charles has strong ties to her Haitian culture, and has been acknowledged by author Ralph Boncy as one of the most important women in Haitian music. . Pianist Willerm Delisfort’s ability to seamlessly shift between styles has made him in demand throughout the worlds of jazz, blues, gospel, hip-hop and pop. He’s collaborated with a wide range of artists including, Fareed Haque, Grammy Award-winning artist T-Pain, Calvin Newborne, Corey Wilkes, , George Freeman, Ernest Dawkins, Red Holloway, Marquis Hill, Milton Suggs, Christopher McBride, to name a few. Delisfort has been a featured attraction at many festivals and venues around the world. . Godwin Louis, alto saxophonist, grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut and Port au Prince, Haiti and began playing saxophone at age nine. Godwin is a graduate of Berklee College of Music and the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute for Jazz Performance. He has studied and performed with Herbie Hancock, Clark Terry, Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Jimmy Heath, Billy Preston, Patti Labelle, Toni Braxton, Babyface, Madonna, Gloria Estefan, Barry Harris, Wynton Marsalis, and Terence Blanchard just to name a few. As a composer, Godwin has received the Jerome Foundation Emerging Artist Grant, and the Jazz Gallery's "New Works Commission". . Harvel Nakundi is a drummer of Haitian descent currently living in New York City. He has performed with Jonathan Michel, Melanie Charles, Godwin Lewis, Willerm Delisfort, Dion Kerr, Haggai Cohen Milo, Tim Jago and Eric England.

YES _____ NO _____ 9. CPFJ Track of the Month by Paul Haidet (@myheroistrane) Gretchen Parlato – Butterfly Album: Live in NYC . Herbie Hancock writes such beautiful songs. “Tell Me a Bedtime Story ” (from the album Fat Albert Rotunda ) is one of my all-time faves. “ Butterfly ” is another. Unlike Bedtime Story, which only occasionally gets covered on record for some strange reason, Butterfly, originally appearing on Hancock's 1974 album Thrust, has been widely re-recorded. Gretchen Parlato, one of my favorite vocalists on the scene today, nails it from the opening note. With a killer band (yeah, we're gonna hear from Taylor Eigsti in a future track of the month), and impeccable timing and sensitivity, it is hard not to emerge from this song transformed. Parlato said it herself in a 2011 interview in the JazzTimes: “Herbie's sister Jean composed the lyrics, which I adore singing.” Given the general amount of strife and anxiety in the world today, we would do well to pay attention to these lyrics, time and again: Butterfly You don't know the peace you bring You show me the secrets and the ways To love every moment of the day And flowers you kiss all come to light To give all the love we knew To see all the light that we can see And teach all the children not to lie And maybe one day we'll fly . www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5HS-5JL2rY

JOIN THE CPFJ YOUTH BAND

Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band almost 30 years ago. Ron Waters is the Director for the CPFJ Youth Band. There is no tuition fee and all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. The band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. All applicants are accepted without audition. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. A professional arranger, composer and trumpet player, he finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year-round, including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they meet kids from other schools who have the same interests. This ensemble offers a different experience than most high school jazz ensembles - it is not an ensemble where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band welcomes all instruments - we have had almost every imaginable instrument - cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in previous bands. COME JOIN THE FUN!! 10.
