Neil Foster spiritualises Carole Lateman lets us into her life John Howard rocks it up in Las Vegas Keith gets to know more about Iain Terry Soul Kitchen, Jazz Junction, Blues Rambling And more... 1 The recent piece by Tony Papard has spurred me to write a little about the paranormal and the arguments both for and against it. First, an experience (concerning a communication from the dead) that my mother had. She once told me that she often used to wake up in the middle of the night to see her late father standing by the bed, not as a vague shape, but as real-looking as if he were still alive. I asked her if she was frightened by the apparition and she replied, “Well, I didn't like it but I knew he wasn't real, so I pulled the clothes over my head and went back to sleep.” So, did she really see her dead father standing by the bed or...? Obviously, she could never “prove” that it happened as she described and no one else could prove that it didn't. However, there is a way around this logical impasse. -

WOW, what a night!! I'm talking about Sunday 19th March at Soho's Spice Of Life venue. Charlie Gracie and the TFTW Band put on a show to remember, Yes, another triumph for us, just take a look at the photo of Charlie on stage at the Spice, you can see he was having a ball, enjoying the appreciation of the audience as much as they were enjoying him. You can read a review elsewhere within these pages, so I won’t labour the point here, except to offer gratitude to Charlie and the Tales From The Woods Band for making the evening so special, in no small part made possible by David the excellent sound engineer whom we request by name for our shows. As many of you have experienced at Rock’n’Roll shows, many a potentially brilliant set has been ruined by poor © Paul Harris sound, or literally having little idea how to sound up a vintage Rock’n’Roll gig. -

Two acoustic duos from remarkably different traditions share this one- time-only double bill. Germán López is a world-renowned timple player from Spain, and is joined by Spanish guitarist Antonio Toledo. López has been performing since the age of 10, including collaborations with the symphony orchestra of Gran Canaria and festival appearances throughout Europe and the U.S. Pronounced “tim-play,” the timple is a diminutive 5-stringed instrument that resembles the 4-stringed ukulele, which López brings to life through a joyous sound that is similar to flamenco music but with a very Portuguese flair. Joel Savoy and Kelli Jones are from Eunice, Louisiana and specialize in Cajun music, honky-tonk and swing on guitar and fiddle. Savoy is the son of renowned Cajun musicians Mark & Ann Savoy, is owner/producer at the Grammy-winning label Valcour Records, and is also the Artistic Director of the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. This is his third SMF appearance. Kelli Jones grew up playing old-time fiddle alongside her father Carl Jones in North Carolina, and has lived in Louisiana for the past decade. She also performs and tours with Feufollet and T’Monde, in addition to this compelling new project. -

Collection Highlights
COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS “LATINOS AND BASEBALL” COLLECTING INITIATIVE Latino baseball players have been interwoven in the fabric of Major League Baseball for years. They've been some of the greatest, well-known names in baseball history. To reflect and celebrate that rich history, the National Museum of American History (“NMAH”) in collaboration with the Smithsonian Latino Center, launched Latinos and Baseball: In the Barrios and the Big Leagues. The multi-year community collecting initiative focuses on the historic role that baseball has played as a social and cultural force within Latino communities across the nation. The project launched a series of collecting events in late February in San Bernardino, California. A second event will be held in Los Angeles on July 17, 2016, and a third will be held in Syracuse, New York, on September 15, 2016. The events are designed to generate interest in the initiative, build on community relationships, record oral histories, and identify objects for possible acquisition by local historical associations as well as for the Smithsonian collections. The collaborative initiative seeks to document stories from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico and plans to collect a number of objects that could include baseball equipment; stadium signs; game memorabilia, such as handmade or mass-produced jerseys and tickets; food vendor signs; home movies; and period photographs. Curators will select objects based on the stories they represent and the insight they provide into the personal, community, and national narratives of the national pastime. “Baseball has played a major role in everyday American life since the 1800s, providing a means of celebrating both national and ethnic identities and building communities,” said John Gray, director of NMAH. -
