Logisch wel dat het regisseren van een film een volgende stap zou zijn en dat haar beste vriendin Carice van Houten daar de hoofdrol in zou gaan spelen: "Ik wist altijd dat ik mijn eerste film met Carice wilde maken." Halina's regiedebuut INSTINCT is op dinsdag 13 augustus in Europese première gegaan op het filmfestival van Locarno in Zwitserland en het internationale podium voor de film breidt zich uit. Toronto International Film Festival Nog maar net bekomen van de première kregen Halina en Carice te horen dat de film geselecteerd is door het befaamde Toronto International Film Festival. INSTINCT zal te zien zijn als onderdeel van het Contemporary World Cinema programma, dat gewijd is aan de beste films van over de hele wereld met een focus op niet- Engelstalige arthousefilms. "Na onze Europese première op het Film Festival in Locarno, waar de film was geselecteerd voor de Piazza Grande screening, zijn we overweldigd dat het prestigieuze Toronto International Film Festival INSTINCT heeft geselecteerd voor haar Noord-Amerikaanse première. Dat deze intieme film zo'n gigantisch podium krijgt hadden we niet durven dromen. We zijn dankbaar en blij. En zenuwachtig!", aldus Halina en Carice die met hun productiebedrijf Man Up de film ook coproduceerden. Spannend De promotiemolen voor de film draait op volle toeren en zal zich op deze manier internationaal in de kijker spelen. Eerder werd ook al bekend dat INSTINCT de opening van het Nederlandse Film Festival is. Allemaal heel spannend! Evenals de film: INSTINCT is een psychologische thriller waarin Carice van Houten (Zwartboek, Game of Thrones, Brimstone) de ervaren psychologe Nicoline speelt , die aan een nieuwe baan bij een tbs-kliniek begint. Daar ontmoet ze Idris, gespeeld door Marwan Kenzari (Wolf, Aladdin), een zedendelinquent die een aantal ernstige misdrijven op zijn naam heeft staan. Na vijf jaar behandeling staat hij op het punt om voor het eerst op onbegeleid verlof te gaan. Zijn behandelteam is zeer enthousiast over de geboekte vooruitgang, maar nieuwkomer Nicoline vertrouwt hem niet en probeert zijn proeftijd te verlengen. Idris doet er alles aan om Nicoline te overtuigen van zijn positieve ontwikkelingen, maar transformeert langzaam maar zeker in de manipulatieve man die ze vanaf het begin al in hem zag. Er ontstaat een machtsspel tussen hen, waar Nicoline ondanks haar kennis en ervaring volledig in verstrikt raakt. Bekijk alvast de trailer: Ware gebeurtenissen Het scenario van INSTINCT is geschreven door Esther Gerritsen op basis van een idee van Halina Reijn naar aanleiding van ware gebeurtenissen. Gerritsen is onder meer bekend van haar romans De Trooster, Roxy en Dorst. Eerder werkte ze mee als coscenarist van de speelfilm Nena, waarvoor ze genomineerd was voor een Gouden Kalf. Bijrollen zijn voor onder meer Marie-Mae van Zuilen, Ariane Schluter, Betty Schuurman, Pieter Embrechts, Tamar van den Dop, Robert de Hoog, Juda Goslinga en Akwasi Owusu Ansah. Geen politieke film Ondanks het actuele thema en de setting van de film, een tbs- kliniek, benadrukt Halina Reijn dat INSTINCT vooral een verhaal vertelt over macht. "Ik wil een verhaal vertellen over macht en seks – en dan vooral vrouwelijke seksualiteit. Zelfs in onze tijd, waarin vrouwen ogenschijnlijk volledig gelijkwaardig zijn aan mannen, is er nog veel niet helder over wat een vrouw drijft. Wat zijn haar driften? Wie of wat is het beest in haar? Het is geen realistisch verhaal; het is geen sociaal drama en ook geen politieke film over het Nederlandse tbs-stelsel. Het zijn twee mensen die elkaar proberen te manipuleren en te domineren en daardoor in een zeer ongezonde situatie terecht komen, omdat ze beiden het gewonde kind in elkaar oproepen."     ROBERT DE HOOG - BiograPHY Robert de Hoog (1988) is known as one of the most talented actors of his generation and has risen to fame while he was still in Theatre School. Next to an International Emmy Award Nomination for Best Actor in SKIN (2007), he is also one of the youngest winners of the Dutch equivalent of an Academy Award, the Golden Calf. In 2018, Robert could be seen in the successful series MOCRO MAFFIA, one of the most viewed series on Dutch VOD-platform Videoland to this date.
