For Chaos Gatcha of Creatrix Collective in Phoenixville, PA, working as a piercer is about two things—the opportunity to be creative and the feeling of having impact in someone’s life. Chaos has been a creative spirit from the beginning, “always drawing and making things out of things”, but career-wise, she started out running putting her business degree to good use running a funeral home with her ex-husband. “When I got divorced, I wanted a job where I could be more creative. I had done commissioned work as an oil painter, and I ended up getting hired at a tattoo shop owned by a young guy who didn’t know a lot about the management side of things and needed help. I started off as a tattoo apprentice, but where I worked, I was really surprised by how little the piercers seemed to know. People would come in with questions, and they could not answer them. They used jewelry that sometimes didn’t fit the clients correctly because they didn’t know enough to account for swelling, things like that. And I thought to myself, there should be a better piercer in our area—not just a tattoo artist who pierced.”

It turns out that Chaos’s transition from tattoo apprentice to piercer was a little magical. “One day, a gentleman who had been piercing for 20 years came into the shop where I worked to get a tattoo. We started talking, and I was asking him all sorts of technical questions about piercing, and he said he would like to teach me, because he could tell how passionate I was about it. So I started an apprenticeship of a year and half under him. And the advice that I would give to anyone wanting to become a piercer today is this: get an apprenticeship. Pay for it like you would for any other technical degree. Don’t learn from a kit online or do it with someone who will teach you for free. There are a lot of things to learn that you can only do with someone who has experience and is as committed to your success as you are.”

It’s been 13 years now since Chaos started piercing. When COVID hit, Chaos was working at Northern Lights, but the pandemic forced the closure of the shop, and Chaos found a new home at Creatrix Collective, an all female shop of 4 artists, just a quarter mile from her house. Several of the women working there came from abusive backgrounds and the owner’s philosophy aligns really well with Chaos’s outlook on life. “I didn’t ever really have a plan in life, and I trust the universe to put me where I am supposed to be. But then sometimes I also have these big moments.
