Permission required for reproduction Creative thinking and exploration: Art university breeds talent in the era of innovation As digital technology becomes of greater importance in the post-COVID era, more attention must be given to arts and humanities education. Thought leaders, creative professionals and scholars have pointed out that an education in the arts trains students to develop innovation and creativity, which are more and more sought after in the new economy. In early March 2021 during the Ministry of Education’s Committee of Supply Debate, Minister of Education Mr Lawrence Wong announced that Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and LASALLE College of the Arts will form an alliance to establish Singapore’s first university of the arts. This university will leverage on the strengths of the two institutions, enabling each to award its own university degrees. A 17-member pro-tem committee, headed by Professor Chan Heng Chee, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will work with both institutions to develop the structure and operating model of the new university, which is expected to be up and ready in early 2023.     Reading Newspapers with the Elderly 陪你看报纸 A community initiative by Lianhe Wanbao & Lianhe Zaobao Singapore Engage • Enrich • Empower Since August 2014, Singapore’s Chinese dailies Lianhe Wanbao and Lianhe Zaobao have been promoting engagement with its matured readers with the Reading Newspapers with the Elderly initiative. For three times a week, our newsroom volunteers visit elderly Singaporeans and discuss the week’s hottest news with them. Through this simple but unique initiative, we hope to enrich the seniors’ lives and empower them to stay active, mentally and physically, and enjoy a fulfilling retirement. Why did we launch this initiative? Singapore’s population is ageing at an unprecedented rate. As the post-war Baby Boomers retire from workforce and enter their silver years, elderly population will grow rapidly in the next few decades. Many of our senior citizens are neither literate nor familiar with the English language, and the language barrier has made it difficult for the Chinese- speaking elderly to keep up with the fast-evolving society. Lianhe Zaobao and Lianhe Wanbao value the spiritual needs of our senior citizens and would like to do our part to help them lead a fulfilling retirement. As editors and journalists, we report on news of public interests every day. News is what we do best, so we believe that reading newspapers with the elderly is one way we can contribute to this cause. Why is this important? Journalism Ethics: Mainstream Versus Tabloid Journalists Through a survey of 356 journalists working for various newspapers under the Singapore Press Holdings, this study shows that despite the influence of newsroom culture, journalists working for the mainstream and tabloid newspapers may not differ in terms of their professional values and ethical standards. It is the content orientation of their newspaper or their perception of it that leads them to act differently in covering certain kinds of news. In other words, the institutional influence does have an impact on the ethical decision-making process among journalists in their daily operations even though it may not determine the direction of their personal beliefs and ethical values. Featuring Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) GUSTO was, once again, featured in The Straits Times (11th November 2016), Lianhe Zaobao and My Paper (28th October 2016) based on a recently published paper in a peer-reviewed scientific journal by the GUSTO neurodevelopment team. Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) occurs when a woman develops high glucose levels during pregnancy. When this is not managed properly, it can lead to complications affecting mother and child. These include pre-term labor, or obstructed labor for mothers. Babies born to GDM mothers are at higher risk of being larger and in the long-term, being overweight and may develop Type 2 Diabetes. Singapore has one of the highest rates of GDM, with about one in five pregnant woman diagnosed with GDM, this is twice the rate of the US. Women diagnosed with GDM run the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes after giving birth. Our GUSTO researchers have found that mothers with GDM have a higher possibility of having babies with attention problems. These babies brain activity was tracked as they were played a “standard” and an “oddball” sound of either “ma” or “na”. People generally commit standard sounds to memory and regard them as background noise, and do not pay attention to them. The brain wave readings of babies, whose mothers had GDM, paid more attention to the standard sound, which would normally be ignored.

ADVERTORIALS (Editorial Style Advertisements) Guidelines Reference Under the Singapore Code of Advertising Practice (SCAP) guidelines, advertisers should SCAP ensure that anyone who looks at the advertisement is able to easily distinguish that it is Appendix A an advertisement and not editorial matter. In general, editorial style advertisments should adhere to the following guidelines: a. The header "Advertisement" or "Advertising Feature" or "Advertorial", or any appropriate text acceptable by Editorial must be placed at the top (center) of the ad.     Media Release Longest running book fair pushes the envelope with book illustrations, and film and music zone Singapore, 31 May 2017 – Singapore Book Fair, an annual event where publishers and book retailers gather, returns this year from 30 May – 5 June at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre, Halls 401 and 402. With the theme “In Books. We Live”, this year's Singapore Book Fair, organised by Singapore Press Holdings' Chinese Media Group, will continue to promote the joy of reading and make reading a part of our lives. The event, in its 32nd edition, will feature 50 exhibitors from Singapore and the region. Visitors can look forward to a host of activities during the seven-day event, ranging from seminars, book launches to storytelling sessions that aim to cultivate visitors’ interest in reading and learning. Book illustrations, films and music, which complement the world of literature, will also be showcased at the fair. Mr Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) & Second Minister for Defence will be the Guest of Honour at the Opening Ceremony on 31 May. As the book fair’s key sponsor, Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple will be supporting the event with $60,000 worth of book vouchers to over 1000 children from low-income families. Each child will be given S$50 worth of book vouchers to purchase books and education materials. These children are beneficiaries from self- help groups including the Chinese Development Assistance Council, Yayasan Mendaki, Sinda and the Singapore Eurasian Association. Singapore Book Fair is supported by Ministry of Education, National Library Board, Singapore Book Publishers Association, Singapore Chinese Publishers Association and ASEAN Book Publishers Association.
