Fire Marshal’s Office Urges Safe Home Heating Practices

The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal (SFM) is reminding all residents to practice safe home heating as our state prepares for some of the coldest temperatures predicted this winter. The top safe-heating tips we are offering families, which can also be found in a video on our agency’s social media sites, include: • Place space heaters 3-5 feet from combustible objects like blankets • Plug all heating appliances directly into wall outlets, not power strips or extension cords • Do not use stoves or ovens to heat homes • Don’t overfill fireplaces/wood burning stoves • Do not leave candles/open flames (or space heaters) left unat- tended • Have working smoke alarms in your home! In addition, the SFM wants residents to be aware of unseen car- bon monoxide threats associated with home heating: • Clogged exhaust pipes for dryers, furnaces, stoves, water heaters and fireplaces • Running a vehicle inside of an enclosed garage, even if the garage door is open • Operating a portable generator in an enclosed space or near a window, door or vent The SFM’s Operation Save-A-Life program partners with local fire departments and districts to provide FREE smoke alarm instal- lations, at any time of the year, for families in need of assistance accessing the critical emergency-alert equipment. In addition to having working smoke alarms, the SFM also em- phasizes the importance of having planned and practiced escape routes for your home that include knowing two ways out of every room. To register for a free smoke alarm, or learn more about Operation Save-A-Life, visit lasfm.org. 4 Arrest Reports & Local News Wednesday, February 17, 2021 - The St. Bernard News Arrests St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office ARABI SURRENDER • BIENEMY, JOBEY S, 41, PLAZA A PERSON CONVICTED • PROYER, ROOSEVELT, 48, • THOMPSON, KEVIN TERRELL, DR, CHALMETTE 70043, OF CERTAIN FELONIES, MEHLE AVE, ARABI 70032, 29, DUBARRY ST, CHALMETTE BENCH WARRANT, BENCH POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA, BATT DATING PARTNER 70043, FUGITIVE, JPSO, WARRANT, BENCH WARRANT, DRUG PARAPHERNALIA, OAKLEY, ROBERT, 51, FUGITIVE JPSO, FUGITIVE BENCH WARRANT, BENCH BENCH WARRANT, BENCH COMMUNITY ST, ARABI 70032, JPSO, FUGITIVE JPSO, WARRANT WARRANT, BENCH WARRANT, FUGITIVE NOPD FUGITIVE JPSO, FUGITIVE FUGITIVE NOPD JPSO, FUGITIVE JPSO, VIOLET • YOUNG, PERNELL J, 20, CHALMETTE FUGITIVE WPD, FUGITIVE KPD • HODGES, CARRESE, 32, CALUDA LN, VIOLET 70092, • WALLIS, ROOSEVELT H, 21, • GETTRIDGE, JULEEL, 21, STACIE DR, VIOLET 70092, DISTURBING THE PEACE/ MUMPHREY RD, CHALMETTE DELAMBERT ST, CHALMETTE DOMESTIC ABUSE BATTERY VIOLENT & TUMULTUOUS 70043, BENCH WARRANT 70043, ILLEGAL USE OF • TEAL, EDDIE J, 40, LICCIARDI MANNER, FLIGHT FROM AN • THOMPSON, KEVIN TERRELL, WEAPON, AGGRAVATED LN, VIOLET 70092, BENCH OFFICER, OBSTRUCTION OF 29, DUBARRY ST, CHALMETTE CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO WARRANT SBSO, FUGITIVE JUSTICE, ILLEGAL CARRYING 70043, FUGITIVE JPSO, PROPERTY, FUGITIVE NOPD, JPSO, FUGITIVE JPSO, OF WEAPON FUGITIVE JPSO, FUGITIVE BENCH WARRANT FUGITIVE JPSO JPSO, FUGITIVE JPSO, • FOSSIER, FERRIN, 34, LYNDEL • MITCHELL, HARRY, 33, OUTSIDE ST. After obtaining information that Aisola was involved in illegal drug activity in St. Bernard, Narcotics Unit agents opened an investigation. Based on their findings, agents conducted a series of search warrants on Monday, Feb. 8 on Golden Drive in Chalmette, Sheriff Pohlmann said. During the execution of one search warrant, agents discovered approximately 23 grams of a heroin/fen- tanyl mixture with an estimated street value of $2,300, along with packaging material, digital scales and a small amount of marijuana. During the execution of a second search warrant, agents recovered approximately 220 grams of high grade marijuana which was packaged for street level sales, along with approximately 15 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of $1,500. Agents also recovered packaging material, digital scales, a semi-au- tomatic firearm and $2,217 in cash. A criminal history check was conducted on all indi- viduals involved in the case, which revealed at the time of his arrest, Aisola was out on bond from an arrest in October of 2020 in St. Bernard for the distribution of heroin. Sheriff Pohlmann reminds residents to call the Sher- iff's Office narcotics hotline at (504) 271-DOPE or 3673 to report suspected illegal drug activity in St. Bernard Parish. William “Bill” Thomas Bergeron, age 73, of St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, passed away peacefully with family at his side at his home in Arabi, Louisiana on February 2, 2021. A one-of-a-kind man who lived and loved with passion, Bill will be best remembered for his significant contributions to the maritime industry and his larger-than-life spirit. Bill, the middle son of the late Roland Joseph Bergeron, Jr. and Helen Pitts Torres Bergeron, was born August 12, 1947 in St. Bernard, Louisiana. As a young boy, his grandmother would always say that he would be in the circus one day. Following gradu- ation from St. Bernard High School, he continued working in his father’s company, Bergeron Machine Shop, Inc. At the age of 23, he successfully negotiated a bid to build the Steamboat Natchez, the first contract of its type in over fifty years, esulting r in hiring of nearly one hundred new employees and numerous subcontractors, as well as creation of a new fabrication yard in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana and drydock on the Mississippi River. Bill’s fingerprints are on the birth of this beautiful representation of the maritime industry – the Steamboat Natchez is one of the most iconic symbols of the city of New Orleans. Bill, alongside his father and brothers, grew their small, family-owned machine and fabrication shop into an international marine services and manufacturing operation. Bergeron Industries, Inc. secured the largest re- ported inland river barge contract in United States maritime history with shipyards and services in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Venezuela. Bill later developed The Bergeron Group, Inc. which provided overall management for a multi-million-dollar Louisiana-based marine services firm. Business units included: Bergeron Marine Service, Inc., Bulk Material Transfer, Inc., Gulf Coast Dockside, Inc., MariTrend, Inc., and Greenville Shipbuilding Corporation. Prior to retiring, Bill’s love of motorcycles and entertaining led him to purchase McNeill Travel Plaza in McNeill, Mississippi – where he brought his New Orleans flair, real food, and hospitality. Bill served as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans and most recently served as President of the Board of Com- missioners of the St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal District. He was bestowed the 2018 C. Alvin Bertel Award, the Governor’s Lantern Award by former Louisiana Governor Dave Treen for major contributions to the state of Louisiana as well as special recognition from former Alabama Governor Fob James for construction of the most modern barge-building plant in the United States. His past associations include: New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, New Orleans Board of Trade, The World Trade Center, The Propellor Club, Just Like New. The Greater New Orleans Barge Fleeting Association, The Louisiana Ship- building and Repair Association, Louisiana Southern Railway: Norfolk Southern Corporation, Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce, The Plimsoll Club, New Orleans Down- Only Better town Irish Club (Man of the Year – 2000), and National Association of Truck Stop Operators. He was a parishioner of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos Catholic Church, New Orleans and served on the Pastoral Council. May he now be at peace and pain-free, in the arms of his loving Savior, Jesus Christ. It turned out to be a bright and sunny day the morning he left us, and if you looked into the sky that day, he seemed to be looking down, smiling on us saying, "I am happy, I am pain-free, and I am free at last, for as one of my tattoos said, "I am in His hands now."
