Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Traditional Funk: An Ethnographic, Historical, and Practical Study of Funk Music in Dayton, Ohio Honors Thesis Caleb G. Vanden Eynden Department: Music Advisor: Samuel N. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history.

  • Funk Is Its Own Reward": an Analysis of Selected Lyrics In
ABSTRACT AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES LACY, TRAVIS K. B.A. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY DOMINGUEZ HILLS, 2000 "FUNK IS ITS OWN REWARD": AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED LYRICS IN POPULAR FUNK MUSIC OF THE 1970s Advisor: Professor Daniel 0. Black Thesis dated July 2008 This research examined popular funk music as the social and political voice of African Americans during the era of the seventies. The objective of this research was to reveal the messages found in the lyrics as they commented on the climate of the times for African Americans of that era. A content analysis method was used to study the lyrics of popular funk music. This method allowed the researcher to scrutinize the lyrics in the context of their creation. When theories on the black vernacular and its historical roles found in African-American literature and music respectively were used in tandem with content analysis, it brought to light the voice of popular funk music of the seventies. This research will be useful in terms of using popular funk music as a tool to research the history of African Americans from the seventies to the present. The research herein concludes that popular funk music lyrics espoused the sentiments of the African-American community as it utilized a culturally familiar vernacular and prose to express the evolving sociopolitical themes amid the changing conditions of the seventies era. • Automatic Recognition of Samples in Musical Audio
Automatic Recognition of Samples in Musical Audio Jan Van Balen MASTER THESIS UPF / 2011 Master in Sound and Music Computing. Supervisors: PhD Joan Serr`a,MSc. Martin Haro Department of Information and Communication Technologies Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona Acknowledgement I wish to thank my supervisors Joan Serr`aand Martin Haro for their priceless guidance, time and expertise. I would also like to thank Perfecto Herrera for his very helpful feedback, my family and classmates for their support and insightful remarks, and the many friends who were there to provide me with an excessive collection of sampled music. Finally I would like to thank Xavier Serra and the Music Technology Group for making all this possible by accepting me to the master. Abstract Sampling can be described as the reuse of a fragment of another artist's recording in a new musical work. This project aims at developing an algorithm that, given a database of candidate recordings, can detect samples of these in a given query. The problem of sample identification as a music information retrieval task has not been addressed before, it is therefore first defined and situated in the broader context of sampling as a musical phenomenon. The most relevant research to date is brought together and critically reviewed in terms of the requirements that a sample recognition system must meet. The assembly of a ground truth database for evaluation was also part of the work and restricted to hip hop songs, the first and most famous genre to be built on samples. Techniques from audio fingerprinting, remix recognition and cover detection, amongst other research, were used to build a number of systems investigating different strategies for sample recognition.

Analyzing Sample-Based Electronic Music Using Audio Processing Techniques Audioverarbeitungsmethoden zur Analyse Sample-basierter elektronischer Musik Der Technischen Fakultät der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg zur Erlangung des Doktorgrades Doktor der Ingenieurwissenschaften (Dr.-Ing.) vorgelegt von Patricio López Serrano Erickson aus Mexiko-Stadt Als Dissertation genehmigt von der Technischen Fakultät der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg Tag der mündlichen Prüfung: 19. Februar 2019 Vorsitzender des Promotionsorgans: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Reinhard Lerch 1. Gutachter: Prof. Dr. Meinard Müller 2. Gutachter: Prof. Dr. Jason Hockman Abstract The advent of affordable digital sampling technology brought about great changes in music production. Experienced producers of sample-based electronic music (SBEM) are capable of understanding the intricate relationship between a sampled source and its use in a new track, harnessing its properties to shape the structure, timbre, and rhythm of their compositions. However, automated analysis of the phenomena surrounding both SBEM and the sources it uses for its samples is a challenge which involves many tasks from music information retrieval (MIR) and audio processing. In this thesis we develop models and techniques to better understand SBEM at different levels. In particular, we offer four main technical contributions to retrieval and analysis tasks. First, we explore how timbral changes affect the spectral peak maps used in audio fingerprinting as a means to identify overlapping samples. Second, we analyze the structure of typical SBEM tracks using audio decomposition based on non-negative matrix factor deconvolution (NMFD). Third, we investigate the interaction of timbre and structure by designing a mid-level audio feature based on cascaded harmonic-residual-percussive source separation (CHRP).
