he Theatre Department started the year with the fall Tproduction of Fools by Neil Simon, a comedy with a message: a small village cursed with stupidity and only one day for a teacher to break the curse or be cursed himself. The winter production was Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, the classic tale of guests on an isolated island who die, one by one, until…. And the final production, the spring musical, was the perennial favorite, You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, populated by the lovable “Peanuts” characters of Charles Schulz. Under the direction of Ready faculty member Jill Larger, Ready students brought each and every character delightfully and fully to life. While 10 very talented and ambitious students participated in each of the productions, the diversity of genres allowed a large number of students to participate over the three productions, either as cast members or working on the crew (without which no production ever sees the light of day!). Next year, two musicals will book-end a “non-musical”: the fall musical will be Cinderella and the winter play and spring musical will be announced at a later date. You can keep up-to-date on all things “theatrical” on the Ready website’s main page under Quick Clicks/The Arts. We strongly encourage those living in the Columbus area to attend a production in 2016-17! It’s family entertainment at a reasonable cost and for a very good cause!

He participated Joey Smith with a friend from the in Chinese Immersion Day school for the blind in Nanjing. and traveled twice to China with the Ready group. He began studying Mandarin while in the sixth grade at Trinity. Now entering his sophomore year at OSU, Joey continues his interest in the Chinese language and culture and is majoring in ecological engineering and Chinese, with a possible minor in geography. In his freshman year at OSU, Joey competed at the junior level at the Chinese Bridge Speaking Competition, finishing third overall. The topic of his speech was about his interaction with a friend he made during a Ready China trip to a school for the blind. His talent show part of the competition was a combination of kung fu and tai chi, but with a slight twist: it was very gymnastics-based, making use of Joey’s experience as a gymnast in the Junior Olympics. During the summer, Joey took an intensive Chinese language class and practiced his gymnastics, in the hope Joey Smith at the junior level Chinese Bridge Speaking Competition, April 2016. of making the OSU team. Joey intends to compete in the Chinese Speaking Competition on the senior level next year…the winner of the senior level wins a month-long trip to China to participate in the global speech competition. In this year’s competition, he was advanced in part because he had the best pronunciation. We have every expectation that he will do well on the senior level and look forward to receiving an update for a future issue.
