Brockington Bulletin April and May 2016 Edition Website: www.brockington.leics.sch.uk | Facebook: www.facebook.com/brockingtoncollege | Twitter: www.twitter.com/brockingtoncoll Brockington Bulletin April and May 2016 Edition As always, it has been an extremely busy time at Brockington College but if we are going to be true to our values and ‘learning to live life to the full’ then so it should be. I was delighted with the conduct and attitude of the Year 10 pupils that sat their GCSE Science exams over the past two weeks. We had 100% attendance (other than known medical issues) for all three exams and the Invigilators were impressed with the pupils. I need to publicly thank Mrs Warner, Mr Chris Southall , our Exams Officer, for organising our first ever GCSE exams at Brockington. She was supported by Principal Mr Barton and Mrs Cuppelditch to ensure that the process was as stress free as possible for the pupils. Massive thanks also to the entire science faculty led by Miss Parmar. The pupils could not have wished for better support and preparation by a brilliant team of staff. They have certainly set the benchmark for next year. Having completed GCSE Science exams, Year 10 pupils now have mock exams in other subjects after the half-term holiday. We are on the countdown to the Year 11 GCSE exams which are less than one year away! Other events recently have included the Forest of Dean residential trip and athletics competitions whilst pupils prepare for the summer musical, Fame, the Art trip to Barcelona and the Year 9/10 trip to South Africa. Outside of the classroom, we have been busy making several staffing appointments, finalising our Year 11 curriculum, processing Year 9 option choices and trialling split breaks and lunches. All this in preparation for our further expansion next academic year. We are again significantly oversubscribed in Year 7 and only have a very small amount of pupils transferring to other schools at the end of Year 9. A consultation on new times of the school day and split breaks/lunches for the next academic year is live on the Brockington website until Friday 17 June 2016. I want to finish by sincerely thanking members of staff for all the work that they have undertaken this half-term. Working in a school is an all encompassing job and they all work incredibly hard for their pupils. • Gloucestershire Castles
Gloucestershire Archives Take One Castle Gloucestershire Castles The first castles in Gloucestershire were built soon after the Norman invasion of 1066. After the Battle of Hastings, the Normans had an urgent need to consolidate the land they had conquered and at the same time provide a secure political and military base to control the country. Castles were an ideal way to do this as not only did they secure newly won lands in military terms (acting as bases for troops and supply bases), they also served as a visible reminder to the local population of the ever-present power and threat of force of their new overlords. Early castles were usually one of three types; a ringwork, a motte or a motte & bailey; A Ringwork was a simple oval or circular earthwork formed of a ditch and bank. A motte was an artificially raised earthwork (made by piling up turf and soil) with a flat top on which was built a wooden tower or ‘keep’ and a protective palisade. A motte & bailey was a combination of a motte with a bailey or walled enclosure that usually but not always enclosed the motte. The keep was the strongest and securest part of a castle and was usually the main place of residence of the lord of the castle, although this changed over time. The name has a complex origin and stems from the Middle English term ‘kype’, meaning basket or cask, after the structure of the early keeps (which resembled tubes). The name ‘keep’ was only used from the 1500s onwards and the contemporary medieval term was ‘donjon’ (an apparent French corruption of the Latin dominarium) although turris, turris castri or magna turris (tower, castle tower and great tower respectively) were also used.

  • School Travel Plans – Update
REPORT AGENDA ITEM 9 LEICESTERSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL HIGHWAYS FORUM FOR HARBOROUGH 8TH DECEMBER 2009 SCHOOL TRAVEL PLANS – UPDATE REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR OF HIGHWAYS TRANSPORTATION AND WASTE MANAGEMENT Introduction 1. The purpose of this report is to update Members of the Forum on the progress being made within the County on developing School Travel Plans and the implementation of associated highway schemes. Background 2. Over the past 20 years, the number of children travelling to school by car has almost doubled and the Department for Transport (DfT) has estimated that, in urban areas in term time, nearly one in five cars at 8.50 am is on the school run. The County Council has been working with schools to develop travel plans through the Local Transport Plan (LTP) since March 2000. School Travel Plans aim to reduce the number of cars arriving at the school gate, mainly by developing initiatives to improve the safety and convenience of alternative travel modes. 3. The LTP sets out a target for 90% of schools in Leicestershire to have completed a travel plan by the end of 2010/11. 4. In September 2003, the DfT and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) launched the ‘Travelling to School Initiative’. A government grant is paid to each school when its Travel Plan is approved (excluding independent schools). Grants for primary and secondary schools differ. The grant for primary schools is £3,750 plus £5 per pupil and for secondary schools it is £5,000 plus £5 per pupil. This grant has to be spent within the school to promote sustainable travel and cannot be spent on the highway.

We recognise that a lot of parents face significant financial pressures and we strive to keep costs as low as possible without any compromise on quality. As a result we find that our educational programmes also become more inclusive for schools allowing more pupils to take part and benefit from the experience. Who are we? First Education & School Travel is part of the First Group of companies, the U.K’s largest surface passenger transport company carrying 2.7 million passengers everyday. Our Education & School Travel team works alongside a range of partners to provide a cost- effective all-inclusive residential experience for schools delivered in a safe and educationally rewarding manner. What’s included? All our programmes include safe, compliant travel, comfortable accommodation and healthy meals in addition to the range of great activities.
