As always, it has been an extremely busy time at but if we are going to be true to our values and ‘learning to live life to the full’ then so it should be.

I was delighted with the conduct and attitude of the Year 10 pupils that sat their GCSE Science exams over the past two weeks. We had 100% attendance (other than known medical issues) for all three exams and the Invigilators were impressed with the pupils. I need to publicly thank Mrs Warner, Mr Chris Southall , our Exams Officer, for organising our first ever GCSE exams at Brockington. She was supported by Principal Mr Barton and Mrs Cuppelditch to ensure that the process was as stress free as possible for the pupils. Massive thanks also to the entire science faculty led by Miss Parmar. The pupils could not have wished for better support and preparation by a brilliant team of staff. They have certainly set the benchmark for next year. Having completed GCSE Science exams, Year 10 pupils now have mock exams in other subjects after the half-term holiday. We are on the countdown to the Year 11 GCSE exams which are less than one year away!

Other events recently have included the residential trip and athletics competitions whilst pupils prepare for the summer musical, Fame, the Art trip to Barcelona and the Year 9/10 trip to South Africa.

Outside of the classroom, we have been busy making several staffing appointments, finalising our Year 11 curriculum, processing Year 9 option choices and trialling split breaks and lunches. All this in preparation for our further expansion next academic year. We are again significantly oversubscribed in Year 7 and only have a very small amount of pupils transferring to other schools at the end of Year 9. A consultation on new times of the school day and split breaks/lunches for the next academic year is live on the Brockington website until Friday 17 June 2016.

I want to finish by sincerely thanking members of staff for all the work that they have undertaken this half-term. Working in a school is an all encompassing job and they all work incredibly hard for their pupils.

More News & RemindersTrips China March 2016 Bletchley Park

On Monday 9 May, thirty Year 9 students visited After a year of preparation the day arrived for us to leave on our adventure to China. Bletchley Park, the site of the famous code breakers Following an early departure from school and a 20 hour journey via Helsinki we who successfully intercepted German radio arrived in Beijing to sunshine and headed straight to our first destination, The communication during the Second World War. Temple of Heaven and the gardens surrounding it. It was great to see the community spirit in the gardens from matchmaker corner to gossip corner and the street performers and groups sitting together making music and playing games. We were able to see the amazing temple itself, and learnt a lot about Chinese culture and beliefs. An acrobatic performance in the evening was absolutely stunning as was the food where everyone enjoyed getting to grips with chopsticks. Everyone agreed the food was amazing and hunger would not be an issue on this trip!

Day 2 started early for our day to the Great Wall of China. En-route we were taught

basic Mandarin reading and pronunciation and visited the Ming Tombs. The tombs had beautiful architecture vastly different from what is located in the UK. After lunch, we headed up to the Great Wall via cable car and we spent a few hours walking along one of the most breath-taking sights in the world. Our journey down was just as amazing - the chance to toboggan down the mountain! By Day 3 the early starts were the norm. We headed to the Summer Palace, where past Emperors and Empresses stayed in the summer. We walked through the longest covered walkway in the world (700+ metres) and followed singing up a hill. We were greeted with a Students undertook workshops, practicing code and whole chorus of Chinese people joined together singing and dancing. Following this we took a boat across the lake before leaving to make our way to Tiananmen Square and the cipher work, similar to workers at the time and a tour Forbidden City (after a tea-tasting opportunity!). After such a busy day we headed to the train station and got on the overnight train to Xi’an. of the site and the set of the film ‘Imitation Game’ were completed.

Day 4 saw us arriving in Xi’an, a more rural section of China upon first impressions. We visited the Hanyang tombs and then cycled the city wall (over 8 miles in length), the only city wall still in complete existence in China. Later we visited an art museum to practice Chinese calligraphy and were taught how to hold the brush correctly and to paint the Chinese symbols of

“Forever” and “Love”. The final stop of the day was the Great Goose Pagoda where we learnt more about the origins of Buddhism. Day 5 was for many of us the highlight of the trip and what was described by the group as the ‘day of clay’. Our first visit of the day was the Replica Terracotta Army Factory in Xi’an, the only place in the world authorized by the Chinese

Government to make replicas of the soldiers using the same clay. We were taught the process of how they made the soldiers. We arrived at the Qin tomb unaware of the wonders we were about to witness. The site is huge with over 600 burial pits containing items of the Emperor’s daily life which he felt he needed in his next life. Of the 600 pits only three are open to the public and only seven have been excavated in total. The site took 38 years to be constructed. Each of the faces and bodies of the 8,000 soldiers were carved perfectly to the finest detail, each with a different face and unique personality. Over ½ million people worked on building the tomb in secrecy and every single one of them was killed so that no-one knew of the existence of the tomb. The final experience of the day was another overnight train to Shanghai for our final day in China.

The final day dawned bright but a little cloudier in Shanghai. The day started with a visit to the Oriental Pear Tower and a trip to the observation desk with a glass floor. After lunch we This educational trip provided students with an visited the Yu Gardens built in 1559. The garden was very beautiful and full of Ming architecture, flowers and plants. Later in the afternoon we visited the Bund the area of Shanghai experience of their working conditions and the that was occupied by the British in the early 1800’s. The view of the river and buildings was amazing. It was very strange because one side success of the code work helping the war reach an of the river was like London and the other full of Chinese skyscrapers. Our final evening involved dinner at really posh local restaurant early conclusion. and then an evening cruise to see the lights of Shanghai at night - an amazing sight. More trips are planned before the end of the academic year, including a trip to the Curve Theatre Day 7 – Another early start but this time homeward bound. 20 hours later we pulled back into in Leicester on 27 June, where some Year 9 students the school car park. Tired, happy to be home but sad that our experience was over.
