India saw the growth of airlines from the beginning of the twentieth century albeit, in the private sector, India also witnessed Nationalization followed by privatization. With a multitude of domestic and global players, aviation in India grew leaps and bounds. Many private airlines wound up on various accounts, many were born as well. The Government of India ensured that Air India and its subsidiaries which were successful till the 1970s and were losing steam on account of bureaucratic and political apathy was funding the behemoth, which turned out to be a loss-making enterprise. The world of aviation has seen plenty of Acquisitions, Mergers, Joint-ventures, Alliances, Partnerships and other business combinations as researched and studied by Prof. Benjamin Gomes-Casseres in his Remix Strategy. The Research paper is a work in progress which is focusing on the dynamics of what the TATA Sons are doing to ensure a revert back to the business that they originally founded in 1932. -

A Study of Mergers & Acquisitions in Aviation Industry in India and Their Impact on the Operating Performance and Shareholder Wealth Nisarg A Joshi Ahmedabad Institute of Technology Jay M Desai Ahmedabad Institute of Technology ABSTRACT The objective of this paper is to study, why organisations take the inorganic mode of expansion. However, the main focus is on studying the operating performance and shareholder value of acquiring companies and comparing their performance before and after the merger. To conduct a uniform research and arrive at an accurate conclusion, we restrict our research to only Indian companies. To get a perspective on India, we study aviation sector. We will test feasibility that mergers improve operating performance of acquiring companies. However on studying the cases, we conclude that as in previous studies, mergers do not improve financial performance at least in the immediate short term. INTRODUCTION The air travel market grew up originally to meet the demand of business travelers as companies became increasingly wide-spread in their operations. On the other hand, rising income levels and extra leisure time led holidaymakers to travel to faraway places for their vacation. A further stimulus to the air travel market was provided by the deregulation and the privatization of the aviation industry. State- owned carriers that hitherto enjoyed monopoly status were now exposed to competition from private players. However, one development that changed the entire landscape of the industry was the emergence of low cost carriers (LCCs). These carriers were able to offer significantly cheaper fares on account of their low-cost business models and thereby attract passengers who might not otherwise be willing to fly. -
Civil Aviation Aircraft Accident Summary for the Year 1996
CIVIL AVIATION AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT SUMMARY FOR THE YEAR 1996 1. INTRODUCTION The information contained in the publication is 47th in the series. "Notifiable accidents", which took place in India during the year 1996 have been listed in a classified chronological order along with the summary and the cause of the accidents. There have been 7 accidents (including the Mid Air collision between Saudi Arabian Boeing 747 and Kazakhastan IL-76 aircraft near Delhi on 12.11.96) during the year. Two accidents have been investigated by the Court of Inquiries. Remaining 5 accidents have been investigated by Inspector of Accidents. Two accidents proved fatal resulting in death of 358 person including 36 crew members. Incidents such as precautionary landings, forced landings, aborted take off, airmisses, bird strikes etc. are not listed in this publication, although all these have been investigated. The recommendations emanating from all such investigations of accidents and incidents are being implemented for enhancing the level of air safety. Statistical data of accidents and fatalities in respect of airlines operations including flying/ gliding clubs and aerial operations is given in table - 1. NOTE : All timings given in this publication are in IST (Indian Standard Time) 2. Besonders im englischsprachigen Raum erfreut es sich erhöhter Aufmerk- samkeit, findet in der deutschsprachigen Literatur aber nur mar- ginal Beachtung, obwohl man an Hand dieses Beispiels interes- sante Erkenntnisse über das Vorgehen der indischen Regierung in dem neuen Wirtschaftsystem gewinnen kann. Allerdings sind Reformen in diesem Bereich in Indien eher träge. Diese Publikation entstand auf der Basis eines kurzen Textes, der für die Webseite des Südasien-Informationsnetzwerkes e.V. geschrieben wurde (NIJHAWAN 2003b). Ich habe ihn jetzt er- weitert und komplett neu aufgelegt, da sich die Szene innerhalb von zwei Jahren weitestgehend geändert hat. Es besteht den- noch die Gefahr, daß der Text aufgrund des neuen dynamischen Umfelds in Indien in manchen Details nicht mehr aktuell ist. Allerdings ist die Fragestellung so aufgebaut, daß der Hauptteil auch dann kaum an Aktualität einbüßt. Darüber hinaus muß der Text nicht als ganzes, sondern kann auch kapitelweise studiert werden. Die Anhänge, welche einige theoretische Konzepte verdeutlichen, sind hierbei hilfreich. -
