These are the basic tenets with which to enter the world of Christian Marclay’s djTRIO, especially in the case of their live recordings. World-renowned multi-media artist Marclay may be best known these days for his globally embraced film collage piece “The Clock,” but he began by redefining the roles of “musician,” “DJ,” and even “artist” itself. Since the late ‘70s, Marclay has created art by masterfully mistreating both vinyl and phonographic equipment, using them both in a manner more consistent with the way an abstract sculptor employs raw materials in the service of a larger vision. Sometimes these sonic journeys utilizing a turntable as a sextant have been in-the-moment experiences and sometimes they’ve been captured for posterity, but 21 September 2002 on Cuneiform Records happens to be both. -

President's Report
Massachusetts college of a rt and d esign a nnual r eport J uly 2010–June 2011 Big things are happening here. You can see it in the numbers — undergraduate enrollment up almost 5 percent; the $140 million comprehensive campaign at 89 percent of its goal. You can hear it across campus — the rattle of construction equipment working on the site of the new 21-story residence hall. You can feel it in the air — a palpable energy sparked by local and global community engagement. ¶ The 2010 academic year was anything but ordinary. It was a year when we applauded the achievements of an extraordinary leader, and anticipated the arrival of a new one. And when we celebrated the ingenuity of our faculty, students, and alumni, who continued to expand the boundaries of creativity. ¶ iii Flourish: Alumni Works on Paper The artwork you see throughout these pages appeared in Flourish: i Alumni Works on Paper, hall residence new MassArt’s first juried alumni exhibition held last June in the Bakalar & Paine Galleries. ii The exhibition highlights the wide range of talent and excellence embodied by MassArt’s inners w artists and designers. president, dawn barrett dawn president, th ard aw eadership l lumni lumni our 11 a Leah De Prizio bfa painting ’63 Arbor Vitae, papier-mâché woodblock print, acrylic, 58" x 24" x 15", 2005. Art and Vinyl — Artist Covers and Records Komposition René Pulfer Kuratoren: Søren Grammel, Philipp Selzer 17. November 2018 – 03. I a musician trapped in an artist's mind or an artist trapped in a musician's body?" ARTIST WORKS for 33 1/3 and 45 rpm (revolutions per minute) Composition René Pulfer The Basel-based artist René Pulfer, one of the pioneers of Swiss video- art and a university professor at the HGK Basel / FHNW until 2015, has been intensively involved with sound art in the context of music since the late 1970s (covers, booklets, artist editions in music ) and coll- ected exemplary works by artists. -
Appropriation Film”
An unauthorized partial recording of Christian Marclay’s The Clock as accessed on Vimeo, May 21, 2015 . Trespassing Hollywood: Property, Space, and the “Appropriation Film” RICHARD MISEk In the two decades since the first exhibition of Douglas Gordon’s 24 Hour Psycho (1993), “appropriation”—a mainstay of visual art since the mid-twentieth century—has become a common feature of experimental filmmaking and artists’ film and video. Many of the most prominent contemporary practitioners in these fields (including Cory Arcangel, Mark Leckey, Christian Marclay, and Nicolas Provost) have made their names by creating montages, collages, mash-ups, and other transformative works from preexisting moving images. Perhaps the clearest evidence so far of appropriation’s prominence within moving-image arts was the 2012 Turner Prize, in which the works of two of the four finalists (Luke Fowler and Elizabeth Price, who won) were videos constructed mainly from archival televi - sion footage. Of course, this artistic turn is symptomatic of a broader cultural turn that has seen media reuse spread to everyday practice. However artists’ audiovisual appropriations may differ from fan-made YouTube supercuts, the two share a cru - cial technological precondition: the ability to copy and transform source files with - out a significant reduction in quality. 1 Applied to video, Nicolas Bourriaud’s char - acterization of contemporary artistic practice as “postproduction” loops back to its original meaning. It describes not only the creative process of “selecting cultural objects and inserting them into new contexts” but also the technologies through which this process takes place: video-editing, sound-mixing, and visual-effects (i.e., “postproduction”) software. -
Untimely Detritus: Christian Marclay's Cyanotypes
CYANOTYPES CHRISTIAN MARCLAY FOREWORD This book is designed to celebrate the remarkable group of cyanotypes Christian Marclay produced between 2007 and 2009 at the University of South Florida’s Graph- icstudio. For more than forty years, emerging and established artists have been invited to work in residence at the Tampa studio. As a university-based atelier, Graphicstudio encourages artists to explore both traditional printmaking methods and new approach- es in collaboration with a highly skilled production staff of printers and fabricators, and to tap the resources offered by the larger academic community. Artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, and more recently Allan McCollum, Vik Muniz, Los Carpinteros, Mark Dion, and Teresita Fernández have created innovative limited-edition works, both prints and sculptures, at the atelier. This rich history of research and experimentation has inspired visiting artists to respond and explore new ground in their own practice. Graphicstudio first utilized the cyanotype process, invented by Sir John Herschel in 1847, with Rauschenberg in the early 1970s. Unlike silver-based photographs, cyanotypes employ an emulsion of iron compounds and are often referred to as “blueprints.” Marclay was very familiar with the cameraless process of the photogram, but curious to explore the cyanotype tech- nique and extend the scale and complexity with the expertise of Graphicstudio. With the atelier’s team of printers, Tom Pruitt, Sarah Howard, Will Lytch, and Tim Baker, Marclay created each cyanotype by placing music cassettes and reels of un- spooled tape directly onto photosensitive paper and then exposing it to light. Adopting and adapting two outmoded technologies—the cyanotype and the music cassette tape—Marclay continued to explore his interest in the resonances between the aural and the visual. -
