2 DEDICATED TO ROBERT W. VETTER FOREWORD In the 1960s, during my early teens, I had the opportunity to study with Al Miller here on Long Island , New York. He was a great performer, educator, motivator, inspiration and a wonderful, selfess person. His method of teaching was way ahead of its time. He had two drum sets in his studio, play-along material, mirrors to see our movement and he wrote six fantastic method books. He was a mentor to me and so many other people. Al’s son Matt has continued in his father’s footsteps. He is a very musical player and dedicated teacher, these results are of Al’s positive infuence. Matt has taken drumming to the next step in continuing the tradition! Tis is the frst volume of Al’s series that opened up musical freedom in many great drummers. Matt delivers this for the 21st century and shows in his video examples the process for you to enhance and develop your drum set skills. It was fun for me in my formative years and I am sure it will be fun for you now! Al’s legacy continues and lives through Matt, now delivered for you to learn and enjoy. - Dom Famularo Drumming’s Global Ambassador I had the privilege of studying with Al Miller from 1992 to 1994. Having not gone to college for music, Al flled in many gaps in my knowledge and I am deeply indebted to him. Afer studying with Dom Famularo for several years, Dom sent me to Al as well, and I’d make the drive from New Jersey to Long Island to spend a day studying with both great teachers. -

After attending North Texas State University in 1980 , he moved to Orlando, Florida where he began performing with such artists as Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, Jon Faddis, Tom Scott, Marvin Stamm, Mel Torme, Buddy Rich, B.B. King, Rich Matteson, Clark Terry, Jack Peterson, Dan Hearly, Urbie Green, Don Sheffield, Ernie Lawrence, Gerry Mullins, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The O’Jays, Bobby Shew, Bill Watorus, Diana Ross, Shields and Yarnell, Connie Smith, Susan Anton, Rosemary Clooney, Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon, Bobby Darin, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons , The Glen Miller Orchestra, The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. While in Orlando, Eric produced, arranged and recorded music for Television, Radio, Convention Shows, Live Artist Shows and various Theme Parks. JOE MORELLO By MARVIN BUROCK A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research Written under the direction of Dr. Lewis Porter and Dr. Henry Martin And approved by ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Newark, New Jersey May 2018 ©2018 Marvin Burock ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Joe Morello by MARVIN BUROCK Thesis Director: Dr. Lewis Porter Dr. Henry Martin This thesis explores legendary jazz drummer Joe Morello’s early years and musical training as well as a portion of his body of recorded drum solos. It also examines his breadth of influence across genres as well as his influence as an educator. Joe’s approach to teaching is also explored. Although hand development was one of his primary areas of focus, he also taught drum set coordination as well as the more musical aspects of drumming such as understanding song form and approaches to improvisation. This thesis also provides a unique glimpse into Joe’s drum equipment and set-up as well as his approach to tuning. The history of his drum and cymbal endorsements is also explored. The information found in this thesis is based on my more than twenty years as his pupil and drum technician.
