Campaign Questions: [email protected] Volunteer/Call Questions: [email protected] Call Script Hi, My name is__and I’m a volunteer with Jill Karofsky for the Wisconsin Supreme Court. May I speak with__, please? I’m calling about the Wisconsin Supreme Court general election on Tuesday, April 7th. Have you heard about the election? (Have conversation – What issues facing Wisconsin and Supreme Court are important to you?) Let me tell you why I think Judge Jill Karofsky is the best choice. Judge Jill Karofsky is the only candidate who is or has ever been a trial court judge. She served as Wisconsin’s first statewide Violence Against Women Prosecutor and the Director of the WI Office of Crime Victim Services. She also taught at UW Law School and worked as a civil attorney for a national nonprofit. She has the right experience, including almost 30 years in Wisconsin courtrooms, and she shares our Wisconsin values. Jill will always uphold the rule of law. That's why she's earned the support of Justice Rebecca Dallet, the last three Democratic governors, and hundreds of judges, attorneys, district attorneys and sheriffs of both parties, and local elected officials and community leaders. For me, the choice is clear. Jill Karofsky is the best choice to serve on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Can we count on your vote for Judge Jill Karofsky for the Wisconsin Supreme Court? [YES] – Thank you so much. You can vote on April 7th and find your polling place at myvote.wi.gov. (Proceed to Volunteer Ask) [Undecided] – Proceed to Additional

  • 4 Independent Political Action
Solidarity Political Basis of Unity: Suggested Bibliography #4 Independent Political Action In the labor and social movements, we call for political independence and a break from the two-party system. The Democratic and Republican parties are dominated by corporations and merely offer different flavors of pro-war and pro-business policies. These capitalist parties maintain a stranglehold on politics in the United States and offer only dead ends for working class and oppressed people. The Democrats in particular have functioned as a trap for organized labor and as the graveyard of social movements. We argue against engagement in the “lesser evil” approach of working with the Democratic Party, which tends over the long term to push the overall political climate to the right. We argue, instead, for the political independence of movements. When possible, we support third parties and independent candidacies that stand on these principles. Our long-term strategic goal is the construction of a mass party that can champion workers’ interests independently of the two-party system. Draft Revision 1, September 2014 Socialists as well as working-class and social movement activists have attempted to build independent parties for more than 100 years. The renewed interest in campaigning for socialist and community candidates stands on that tradition. In the past, those efforts were unable to break through at a national level and several were incorporated into the Democratic Party. Today, election laws, the amount of money necessary to build a campaign and the emphasis on campaigning through the media have raised the stakes against independent political action. Current Initiatives Solidarity is Prioritizing The Green Party campaign for governor/lieutenant governor in New York State is important for the issues it is raising.

DEBUNKING THE 'ISLAMISATION' MYTH ___________________________________________ Edmund Standing DEBUNKING THE ‘ISLAMISATION’ MYTH Why Britain Will Not Become an Islamic State ________________________________________ ________________________________________ About the author Edmund Standing is the author of The BNP and the Online Fascist Network (Centre for Social Cohesion, 2009) and co-author (with Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens) of Blood & Honour: Britain’s Far-Right Militants (Centre for Social Cohesion & Nothing British, 2010). CONTENTS Preface 3 Introduction 4 I Cultural Pessimism and the ‘Islamisation’ Myth 5 II The Myth of International Muslim Power 8 III The Myth of Muslim Power in Britain 12 IV The Myth of a ‘Demographic Time Bomb’ 25 Conclusion: Against the Culture of Despair 29 References 31 PREFACE I am an atheist, a secularist, and an anti-fascist. I have no interest in defending Islamic religious beliefs, nor the Qur’an (quite the opposite, in fact). I also have no time for those who seek to ‘understand’ Islamism or downplay the abhorrent nature of religious fascism. That said, I am also committed to a rational and just approach to my fellow human beings, seeking to treat them in the same way, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, religious affiliation, and so on. To think Islam as a set of beliefs is false and potentially dangerous is not the same thing at all as thinking that all Muslims are inherently dangerous or that I should view them as qualitatively different to other human beings. In the post-9/11 West, we have seen the worrying growth of a paranoid, bigoted approach to Muslims which increasingly views them as an undifferentiated mass, as an inherent Other, and as a powerful fifth column conspiring to destroy the West and enslave it to Sharia law.

  • COVID-19, Opportunism, Pretext, and Subnational Democracy
Calling in “Sick”: COVID-19, Opportunism, Pretext, and Subnational Democracy Matthew Stenberg, Philip Rocco, and Safia Abukar Farole August 3, 2021 As governments sought to manage the Coronavirus pandemic, many pursed a temporary increase in centralized authority, a general tactic of crisis management. However, in some countries, centralization in the name of public health was not the only motive. The COVID-19 response coincided with broader worldwide trends towards democratic backsliding and authoritarian consolidation. Some of these efforts happened while the world was preoccupied with responding to the pandemic without concretely referencing Coronavirus; however, in other cases, public health rationales are clearly and explicitly invoked as a pretext for actions that instead aid the consolidation of regime authority. This has been especially pernicious in subnational democracy, where efforts have been made to undermine the ability of opposition parties to fairly contest in local and regional politics. This paper looks at four cases in which political actors either opportunistically used worldwide distraction from the COVID-19 pandemic or explicitly invoked public health while seeking to undermine long-term domestic contestation in their jurisdictions: Hong Kong, Hungary, Uganda, and the United States. We examine the use of public health as a pretext or opportunity for undermining opposition parties, recentralizing political authority in dominant actors, and inhibiting the fair contestation of elections. We would like to thank Nisha Bellinger, Kai Yui Samuel Chan, Lucas Dolan, Laura Jakli, Brad Kent, and Todd LaPorte for helpful comments. Introduction Organizational theory posits that even in the most horizontal organizations, a crisis will centralize decision-making in the hands of a small group of leaders (Hermann 1963; Holsti 1972; ’T Hart, Rosenthal, and Kouzmin 1993).

Unless otherwise expressly stated herein, all references to section and chapter numbers are to those of the Dane County Code of Ordinances. ARTICLE 2. Referred to PERSONNEL/FINANCE, PUBLIC WORKS & TRANSPORTATION and ENVIRONMENT, AGRICULTURE & NATURAL RESOURCES. --------------- RES. 1, 10-11 APPROVING LEASE WITH FRIENDS OF SCHUMACHER FARM AT SADDLEBROOK BARN IN WESTPORT In 2007 Dane County acquired approximately 172 acres of land in the Town of Westport from Saddlebrook LLC for the North Mendota Natural Resource Area. The property included several buildings that are used by the Sheriff’s Department and the Land & Water Resources Department. The property is relatively close to Schumacher Farm, a County property used as a park and as a demonstration area of farming practices from the early 1900s. The Friends of Schumacher Farm, a volunteer group that helps maintain and manage Schumacher Farm, indicated a desire to use a two-story hay barn, which is not being used by either the Sheriff’s Department or the Land & Water Resources Department, for the storage of historical farming equipment and other objects associated with the farm-park.

In response, one of my fellow Commissioners, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, noted that the work of this Commission was a sacred duty to the memory of both victims and survivors of the Holocaust. One year on, having concluded its work in presenting this report, I believe that the Commission has fulfilled that duty and has provided a set of recommendations which will give effect to an appropriate and compelling memorial to the victims of the Holocaust and to all of those who were persecuted by the Nazis.
