MILO BOOKS, United Kingdom, 2010. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Thomas Hearns is one of the greatest fighters of all time. From his explosion onto the pro boxing scene with seventeen straight knockouts, he struck fear into opponents and awe into spectators. He featured in some of the most thrilling bouts ever and became the first champion to win six titles at dierent weights. He will forever be known by his chilling nickname: Hit Man. Growing up in the urban wasteland of inner-city Detroit, Hearns learned to defend himself at the notorious Kronk gym. There he came under the tutelage of master trainer Emanuel Steward, who turned him into the deadliest puncher in the game. From his destruction of Pipino Cuevas to his now-legendary fights with fellow greats Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran, Hearns carved out a reputation for skill, courage, and stunning power. His epic 1985 challenge against middleweight champion Marvin Hagler, billed as The War, has gone down as the most exciting three rounds in boxing history. Defeats only seemed to make Hearns stronger, and he achieved the extraordinary feat of winning titles in every weight category, from welterweight to cruiserweight. Lately he has devoted his energies to his promotions company, Hearns Entertainment, yet he still toys with the idea of winning one more belt. Hit Man delves inside this complex, charismatic character to present a compelling portrait of a modern sports legend. Brian Hughes is a boxing trainer and the author of numerous boxing biographies. His son, Damian Hughes, is a leadership consultant. Both live in Manchester, England. Good effortBy ihaschThis is a good, solid biography of my favorite boxer of all time. Hagler is a fighter whose stature grows with time. You look back on his career, on the tough road he had to the title, on the honest way he fought. The man was probably the last of his kind. As others have noted, Hagler himself does not participate (maybe we will see an autobiography some day) but the book is well sourced and well written.

Physical attributes include height, build and reach and psychological can be aggressive or defensive in nature when competing. Commonly encountered boxing styles are 1. Swarmer – aggressive 2. Out-boxer – defensive 3. Slugger – both aggressive and defensive 4. Boxer Puncher – both aggressive and defensive 5. The Counterpuncher – both aggressive and defensive 6. The Southpaw – both aggressive and defensive 1. Swarmer The Swarmer also known as ‘the Crowder’ keeps momentum moving forward with a high rate of punches to close the range and wear an opponent down with pressure of a non-stop work rate. The Swarmer is extremely fit and well-conditioned to keep up this constant pressure tactic for the duration of the bout. Famous Swarmers: Ricky Hatton, Erik Morales, Nigel Benn, Micky Ward 2. Out-boxer The Out-boxer will keep an opponent at the end of their reach with long punches such as the Jab. This tactic controls distance and scores with long punches with much footwork movement to avoid being scored upon. Offensive tactics are calculated, keeping at arm’s length range picking their shots when openings occur or luring opponent to attack and with perfect timing unload a counterpunch. Famous Out-boxers: Muhammad Ali, Wladimir Klitschko, Lennox Lewis, Larry Holmes 3. Slugger The Slugger style relies on the strength and power of punches to win the bout, rather than on strategy and a well-placed punches.

  • By Nigel Collins a GOD AMONG MORTALS
t was a difficult decision to make, play softball with my buddies from work or watch MEMORIES OF MARVIN HAGLER Marvelous Marvin Hagler challenge middleweight champion Alan Minter on television. The thorny issue was settled when a teammate somehow jury-rigged a small TV to the battery of his car, which was parked on the stretch of grass where we played. IFor some inexplicable reason that autumn afternoon in 1980 was the first thing that flashed through my mind after learning that Marvin had died, unexpectedly, March 13 at the age of 66. Maybe it was because he made his bones fighting a series of badass Philly middleweights at the Spectrum, located almost within homerun distance from where we clustered around a middle-aged Chevy with a black and white TV on its roof—an echo of the time when folks huddled around a radio to listen to Joe Louis fight. Our game wasn’t delayed for long. Hagler, a savvy, ambidextrous southpaw with a jackhammer punch, stopped Minter in the third round. The quick demise of the Brit sparked a disgraceful racist-fueled riot fermented by drunken thugs among the sellout crowd of 12,000 at London’s Wembley Arena. A fusillade of beer bottles came crashing A GOD into the ring like mortar shells and there were no foxholes in which to hide. AMONG MORTALS By Nigel Collins A GOD AMONG MORTALS What should have been the greatest moment of Hagler’s career turned into a scramble for safety when hooligans and degenerates pelted the ring with gar- bage following Hagler’s stoppage of Alan Minter to win the middleweight title in London in 1980.

PRESENTS CANCELED!By Don Stradley t’s about time to comment on the cancelation of the Gennady Golvkin - Saul Alvarez rematch, a bout that fell through when Alvarez, having failed two tests for the banned substance clenbuterol, decided to make different plans for Cinco De Mayo. Regrettably for Alvarez, he can pass hair follicle tests until he looks like Bennie Briscoe, but the company line that his initial results came from eat- I ing tainted Mexican beef will probably be questioned for the rest of his career. (left to right) Gerry Cooney’s frequent cancelations created a wall of cynism between him and the press. Thomas Heans vs. Marvelous Marvin Hagler was supposed to take place in 1982, until Hearns canceled it with a “sprained his pinky.” A suspicious cancelation has a way of altering our perception of a fighter. It’s not on par with quitting in a fight, but it carries its own unique stench that can take years to air out. Generally, it’s a poor public relations move. eavyweight contender Gerry Cooney turned cident didn’t hurt Hearns’ career, but he spent a few years cancelations into an annual event. • Sporting Legends: Marvin Hagler
SPORTING LEGENDS: MARVIN HAGLER SPORT: BOXING COMPETITIVE ERA: 1973 - 1987 Marvelous Marvin Hagler (born Marvin Nathaniel Hagler in Newark, New Jersey May 23, 1954), a native of Brockton, Massachusetts, was one of the most successful Middleweight Boxing Champions of all-time. Total fights 67 Wins 62 Wins By KO 52 Losses 3 Draws 2 Hagler started his professional boxing career in 1973, and soon began working his way up through the Middleweight rankings. He often had to travel to his opponents' hometowns to get fights, often boxing against the best that the city of Philadelphia had to offer (and beating them). Hagler took on all challengers, and by 1976 had chalked up a 26-0 record. However, during the same year he lost controversial decisions to Willie Monroe and Bobby 'Boogaloo' Watts, and had to suffer while watching less-deserving challengers receive title shots against Carlos Monzon and Hugo Corro. This served for Hagler to build upon a character that was as tough as steel, but with a soft spot in his heart toward his fans. Hagler soon avenged his 2 defeats by knocking out Monroe and Watts in rematches, and won a 10-round decision over Bennie Briscoe in a 1978 classic Philadelphia confrontation. By this time, he had made fans in both Massachusetts and Philadelphia, two of boxing’s legendary hot-beds. By then, promoter Bob Arum, a lawyer who had helped in the White House during President John F. Kennedy's tenure, took notice and signed him. Arum raised Hagler’s public profile and finally, in November 1979, Hagler was in the ring with a world Middleweight champion.
