StartBright is a registered charity that provides excellent childcare and early learning services to over 300 children, from 1 to five years, in five different locations every day. Children in our service come from a variety of backgrounds. We particularly support children coming from communities experiencing disadvantage, children with additional educational needs and children from families with multiple disadvantage. We employ over 50 staff and our services are delivered in a safe, supportive and creative environment. We, in StartBright, take pride in our services being: child-centred, non-judgemental, excellent and honest. StartBright Mission Statement We will develop, deliver and champion early learning services for children, particularly for those living in communities experiencing disadvantage. We will communicate our vision and values more clearly and develop our organisation so that we deliver excellent services in an open and honest way. Honest Operating to the highest possible standards in terms of honesty, professionalism, transparency and accountability. 6 Code of Ethics Principles The Code has been developed to inform and guide the decisions and behaviour of all centre staff. Statement of Intent Young children are especially vulnerable and rely on responsible adults to care and protect them. Staff at the Centre are in a relationship of special trust – one that is powerful and important. We recognise that our role is multi-faceted, and we have developed this code of ethics to assist us provide the best quality service possible. (Síolta Standard 1: Rights of the Child) Policy & Procedure This Code of Ethics is underpinned by the following principles: • The wellbeing of the individual child is of paramount importance. • We acknowledge the uniqueness of each child attending the centre • We take into account the critical impact of self-esteem on the individual child’s development. • We base practice on sound knowledge, research and theories, while at the same time recognising the limitations and uncertainties of these; and • We work to fulfil the right of all children and their families for access to services of high quality. Procedure Based on the above principles the Centre has developed the following Children’s Charter. 7 CHILDREN’S CHARTER - Children’s welfare and their rights to secure, healthy and happy childhood are paramount. - The experiences children receive in their early years are critically important in terms of future development. - Children are entitled to expect that all adults will respect, uphold and preserve their rights and to ensure that their feelings and wishes are taken into account. - Children should have the opportunity to make choices and develop a sense of responsibility for their own actions appropriate to their age. - Children, parents and carers should not be discriminated against, particularly in relation to colour, age, race, religion, gender, disability medical conditions or background. - Parents will be recognised and respected as children’s first and continuing educators. Statement of Purpose & Function (Individual to service) The purpose of this service is to provide a Full time/Part time/sessional facility for children aged 2.5 years – 5/12 years. We open 50 weeks per year and daily from Monday to Friday from 8am – 4pm School age childcare runs from Monday to Friday 1.30pm – 4pm and caters for up to 20 children at any one time. We have capacity to cater for 60 children at any one time and our ratios are as follows: (insert age group and ratio of children) 2-3 years – 1 adult: 6 children 3-5 years – 1 adult: 11 children School aged children: 1 adult: 8 – 12 children This service is a community based facility, registered as a part time/sessional with a School aged childcare service. It is operated by StartBright Early Learning Centres Company Limited by Guarantee.
