All other citations are identified in the 2 . CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Pale J<'ire is a novel that is put together in the reader's mind 1rom the material supplied by ~abokov . The reader is pre~ented with four com plex blocks of material - two large ones (a 999 - line poem by John Shade, and what proclaims itself to be a critical commentary on that poem by Charles Kinbote), and two lesser ones (a foreword and an index, both by Kinbote) . The four parts can be fitted together· in a number of ways, and the pattern thac emerges will depend on the way the reader chooses to relate them . -

If citing, you are advised to consult the published version for pagination, volume/issue and date of publication Nabokov’s American Gut Author: Beci Carver Affiliation: University of Exeter Email: [email protected] Abstract Edmund Wilson wrote to Nabokov on January 14th 1946: ‘I hear from people who have seen you that you are becoming stout, optimistic and genial – in other words, Americanized.’ The rumour was true: Nabokov’s relocation to America in the 1940s seemed to act in conspiracy with the swelling of his gut, such that by the time he achieved international fame as an anglophone American writer, his silhouette was permanently voluptuous. I will propose in this article that Nabokov’s discomfort at his expansion is linked to his ambivalence about becoming American. When Wilson accused him of becoming Americanly stout in 1946, he squirmed: ‘Thanks for your remarks (though I did not understand the one about my “americanization.”) It is my argument here that, in the middle years of the twentieth century, Nabokov underwent what Lauren Berlant has described in an essay on American obesity as a ‘crisis of choosing and antiwill’, and that this crisis reverberates through his accounts of food and fatness. -

TTh 1:30-2:45 pm, Wrigley Hall 1-08 Art in Exile: Vladímir Vladímirovich Nabókov Fall 2014 Course Description This course is offered in English. The scandalous success of Lolita (1955) allowed Vladimir Nabokov to retire from teaching at Cornell University and move to Switzerland to devote himself to fiction, translation, criticism, and lepidoptery. This was only one of the many metamorphoses that Nabokov, a Russian noble, underwent while in exile, moving from Russia to the Crimea, Cambridge UK, Berlin, Paris, Cambridge MA, Ithaca, Hollywood, and finally Montreux. This course examines the Russian roots of Nabokov’s Russian (in translation) and American novels about exile: his first novel, Mary (1926), The Defense (1929), Glory (1932), and his tribute to nineteenth-century Russian literature, The Gift (1938), which he considered his greatest Russian novel. These are followed by Lolita (1955), Pnin (1957) and Pale Fire (1962), his memoirs, Speak, Memory (1966), and some essays and short stories. Films include Lolita by Stanley Kubrick (1962) and Adrian Lyne (1997). 2 Learning Outcomes Over the course of the semester, students will: 1. Develop an appreciation for Nabokov’s life as writer, translator, and lepidopterist, the major works, and some scholarship and films about him and his works. 2. Discover and discuss Nabokov’s work as a translator and his views on translation in the context of translation theory. 3. Argue with Nabokov’s position on important literary debates in the context of Russian literary history more generally, especially Pushkin. -

KOBALTANA: PALE FIRE’s Mystery Spot The Secret to the Treasure is the Treasure (esoteric saying) TREASURE: There is an unsolved mystery in Nabokov’s Pale Fire – the hiding place of Zembla’s crown jewels. A closed loop in the index goes from “Crown Jewels,” which takes one to “Hiding place,” which refers to “Potaynik,” which in turn refers to “Taynik, Russ., secret place; see Crown Jewels.” Nabokov, when asked by the critic Alfred Appel Jr. for the location of Pale Fire’s crown jewels, offered an equally mystifying circumlocution: “In the ruins, sir, of some old barracks near Kobaltana (q.v.); but do not tell it to the Russians.” (SO, 92) Kobaltana is indeed listed in Pale Fire’s index as “a once fashionable mountain resort near the ruins of some old barracks now a cold and desolate spot of difficult access and no importance but still remembered in military families and forest castles, not in the text.” This set-up makes clear that Nabokov wants us to play this game of hide-and-seek. One would expect that the reward of discovering the crown jewels would be more than a clever game; it should be a satisfying key to the novel. We shall see. John Shade’s poem is also circular, the unfinished last line suggesting a return to the first line. The circle returning on itself is an ancient symbol, used also in alchemy, of the snake eating its tail – the uroboros. Carl Jung saw the uroboros as a mandala, the ultimate symbol of wholeness, which he termed the true self. -

THE ZEMBLAN WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, OR Nabokov’s PALE FIRE, CHANCE, AND THE COLD WAR BY STEVEN BELLETTO In his revised autobiography, Speak, Memory (1966), Vladimir Nabokov recounts two chance events that had come to haunt his later life and fiction: the moment when his father was murdered by an assassin’s bullet meant for another and the moment when as a boy Nabokov happened upon his brother Sergey’s diary. That the accidental death of Nabokov’s father (born 20 July) was personally significant—and a plausible germ for the accidental shooting of John Shade in Pale Fire (1962) on 21 July 1959—seems obvious; what is less clear is why his youthful snooping should be so poignant to him as a man in his sixties. Part of the answer comes toward the end of Speak, Memory, when the usually-eloquent Nabokov admits that for “various reasons I find it inordinately hard to speak about my other brother [Sergey].”1 What he does remember with characteristic vivid- ness, however, is the moment he transgressed his brother’s personal privacy: “[A] page from his diary that I found on his desk and read, and in stupid wonder showed to my tutor, who promptly showed it to my father, abruptly provided a retroactive clarification of certain oddities of behavior on his part.”2 These “oddities” pertained, no doubt, to Sergey’s homosexuality, about which the grown Nabokov had long felt uncomfortable, and which is referred to so obliquely in the autobiography that it remains—like Sergey himself—virtually absent. -

Leonardo’s Literary Writings: History, Genre, Philosophy by Filomena Calabrese A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Italian Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Filomena Calabrese, 2011 Leonardo’s Literary Writings: History, Genre, Philosophy Filomena Calabrese Doctor of Philosophy Department of Italian Studies University of Toronto 2011 ABSTRACT: This dissertation examines Leonardo da Vinci’s literary writings, namely those known as the Bestiario, Favole, Facezie, and Profezia, as compelling expressions of how Leonardo envisioned the role and influence of morality in human life. Through an analysis of these four literary collections from the perspective of their genre history, literariness, and philosophical dimension, it aims to bring to light the depth with which Leonardo reflected upon the human condition. The Bestiario, Favole, Facezie, and Profezia are writings that have considerable literary value in their own right but can also be examined in a wider historical, literary, and philosophical context so as to reveal the ethical ideas that they convey. By studying them from a historical perspective, it is possible to contextualize Leonardo’s four collections within the tradition of their respective genres (the bestiary, fable, facetia, and riddle) and thus recognize their adherence as well as contribution to these traditions. The literary context brings to light Leonardo’s intentionality and ingenuity as a writer who uses generic conventions in order to voice his ethical views. Assessed from a philosophical standpoint, these four literary collections prove to be meaningful reflections on the moral state of humanity, thereby justifying the characterization of Leonardo as a moral philosopher.
