Systematics of the Middle Jurassic Heteromorphic Ammonites
UDC 564. 53 . 01 SYSTEMATICS OF THE MIDDLE JURASSIC HETEROMORPHIC AMMONITES N. V. Besnosov and V. V. Kutuzova All-Union Scientific Research Petroleum Geologic Exploration Institute (VSEGEI) ABSTRACT: The stratigraphic distribution, phylogenetic relationships, and systema tics of the Middle Jurassic heteromorphic ammonites and their relationship to the monomorphic ammonites are considered. Sulcohamitoides gen. nov. and Gaantiana as ajani sp. nov. are described. * * * The vast majority of Middle Jurassic heteromorphic ammonites are shells with a spiral developing early in one plane, all the way to the formation of a straight tube in the outer part of the phragmocone and in the living chamber. They are also characterized by reduction of the U and I lobes in ontogenesis, manifested to a greater or lesser degree, and by only slight dissection of their lobes and saddles. The following generic names of the Jurassic heteromorphs are given in the lite rature. Acuceas Potonie, 1929, for which the family Arcuceratidae Arkell, 1950 has been proposed. This genus is based on a single species, A. mathae Potonie, from the Pliensbachian of Germany, the only specimen of which has been lost. Repeated searches at the type locality have been unsuccessful. It has been suggested that the dating is erroneous, or that the species and genus are based not on a heteromor phic ammonite, but on acrinoid stem. Apsooceas Hyatt, 1900, occurs in the lower half of the subfucatum zone of the Upper-Bajocian and has usually been combined with Spioceas Quenstedt, 1858, from which it differs in its less reduced U and I lobes and its finer sculpture. -

[The faunal horizons of the "Subfurcaten-Schichten" (Bajocian, Niortense-Zone) in Northwest Germany) Abstract: Because of new exposures in the "Subfurcaten-Schichten" (Bajocian, Niortense- Zone) in Northwest Germany it is possible to subdivide the sequence in ammonite faunal hori- zons. A palaeontological revision of the genus Strenoceras HYATTwith the subgenus Strenoceras HYATT(m) and Garantiana HYATT(M) is executed. -

Mittaa, b, * aBorissiak Paleontological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, 117647 Russia bCherepovets State University, Cherepovets, 162600 Russia *e-mail: [email protected] Received March 12, 2019; revised March 29, 2019; accepted April 1, 2019 Abstract—This paper presents the results of the study of the Upper Bajocian Garantiana garantiana Zone (Middle Jurassic) and characteristic ammonites in sections of the basin of the Kuban River (Karachay-Cher- kessia). The assemblage contains species of the genera Garantiana, Pseudogarantiana, Paragarantiana, Djanaliparkinsonia (all family Stephanoceratidae) and Vermisphinctes (family Perisphinctidae). A section of the Garantiana Zone on the Kyafar River contains (from bottom to top) Beds with Djanaliparkinsonia alanica (also recognized on the Kuban River), Beds with Garantiana subgaranti and Beds with Paragarantiana, approximately corresponding to the Dichotoma, Garantiana, and Tetragona subzones of the standard scale. Garantiana subgaranti Wetzel and Vermisphinctes martiusii (d’Orbigny) are described. Prorsisphinctes Buck- man, 1921 is proposed as a junior subjective synonym of Vermisphinctes Buckman, 1920. Keywords: Upper Bajocian, ammonites, Garantiana, Paragarantiana, Djanaliparkinsonia, Vermisphinctes, biostratigraphy, Northern Caucasus DOI: 10.1134/S0031030119110066 INTRODUCTION lished records of representatives of Garantianinae in the Garantiana Zone in the Northern Caucasus The Garantiana garantiana Zone is located (Ob”yasnitelnaya…, 1973; Yura…, 1992) are not sup- between the Upper Bajocian Strenoceras niortense and ported by figures or collections, and are mostly based Parkinsonia parkinsoni zones of the standard scale and on field identifications. -

The Early Triassic Smithian/Spathian Boundary (SSB) crisis coincides with an episode of extreme warmth. A high resolution stratigraphic framework comprising six conodont zones is provided in Jiarong section, Nanpanjiang Basin, South China. Detailed size measurements of 441 conodont elements of the closely related genera Neospathodus, Triassospathodus and Novispathodus show for the first time that this clade suffered a temporary, but significant, size reduction during the SSB crisis. Size reduction of conodonts was probably caused by an episode of global warming. Keywords: Conodont; size variation; Early Triassic; extinction; South China. Latest Bajocian -

Stuttgarter Beiträge zur Naturkunde Serie B (Geologie und Paläontologie) Herausgeber: Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde, Rosenstein 1, D-70191 Stuttgart Stuttgarter Beitr. Naturk. Ser. B Nr. 373 74 S., 35 Abb. Stuttgart, 28. 12. 2007 Revision of the Middle Jurassic dimorphic ammonite genera Strigoceras/Cadomoceras (Strigoceratidae) and related forms GÜNTER SCHWEIGERT, VOLKER DIETZE, ROBERT BARON CHANDLER & VASILII MITTA Facies non omnibus una, nec diversa tamen. OVID, Metamorphoses Abstract We present a modern revision of the dimorphic ammonite pair Strigoceras QUENSTEDT, 1886/Cadomoceras MUNIER-CHALMAS, 1892 from the Middle Jurassic. The stratigraphically oldest hitherto known chronospecies of Strigoceras, S. praenuntium (BUCKMAN) appears in the Middle Aalenian as an extreme rarity. Records of the microconch genus Cadomoceras re- main unknown from strata older than Early Bajocian, but otherwise its stratigraphical range corresponds well with that of the macroconchs. The genus probably became extinct in the Early Bathonian (Zigzag Zone). The youngest known Strigoceras is S. callomoni n. sp. descri- bed here from the Macrescens Subzone of the Early Bathonian. Another new strigoceratid species, Granulochetoceras oppeliisculptum n. sp., is recorded by a single specimen from the early Garantiana Zone of eastern Spain, representing an interesting phyletic link between Stri- goceras QUENSTEDT, 1886 and Granulochetoceras GEYER, 1960. We include a brief review of the latter genus. By including Granulochetoceras in the Strigoceratidae the family would ex- tend to the Late Kimmeridgian of the Late Jurassic. The palaeogeographic distribution of Strigoceras/Cadomoceras is focussed on the western Tethyan Province, but some species also occur in the northern Pacific and its adjacent shelves. A benefit of this large area of distribution is that strigoceratids may be used to correlate distant locations, but this is partly hampered by the relatively wide range of variability within succeeding chronospecies and remarkably large variation in size of adult macroconchs. -

Ammonoid Intraspecific Variability
Zurich Open Repository and Archive University of Zurich Main Library Strickhofstrasse 39 CH-8057 Zurich www.zora.uzh.ch Year: 2015 Ammonoid Intraspecific Variability De Baets, Kenneth ; Bert, Didier ; Hoffmann, René ; Monnet, Claude ; Yacobucci, Margaret M;Klug, Christian Abstract: Because ammonoids have never been observed swimming, there is no alternative to seeking indirect indications of the locomotory abilities of ammonoids. This approach is based on actualistic com- parisons with the closest relatives of ammonoids, the Coleoidea and the Nautilida, and on the geometrical and physical properties of the shell. Anatomical comparison yields information on the locomotor muscu- lar systems and organs as well as possible modes of propulsion while the shape and physics of ammonoid shells provide information on buoyancy, shell orientation, drag, added mass, cost of transportation and thus on limits of acceleration and swimming speed. On these grounds, we conclude that ammonoid swim- ming is comparable to that of Recent nautilids and sepiids in terms of speed and energy consumption, although some ammonoids might have been slower swimmers than nautilids. VOL. 32 - N° 1, 2013 Revue de Paléobiologie, Genève (juin 2013) 32 (1): 249-265 ISSN 0253-6730 Hydrostatics, propulsion and life-habits of the Cretaceous ammonoid Baculites Gerd WESTERMANN1 Abstract Experiments with test models support the computer models of orthoconic nautiloids of Westermann (1977). (1) Thin-walled shells with long body-chambers and empty phragmocones (bipartite hydrostatic system) were neutrally buoyant with stable vertical orientation; variants with different wall thickness and body-chamber shape changed the proportions. The test models resemble the real preadult and most adult Baculitidae and support the common assumption that baculites were planktic vertical migrants. (2) The test models also show that flooding of most adapical chambers of thin-walled orthocones (tripartite hydrostatic system) could achieve neutral equilibrium; the body-chamber was reduced (brevidomic) but the unstable orientation permitted horizontal swimming. Scale models of adult Baculites from the North American Western Interior seaway replicate this brevidomic computer model with unstable orientation. Modified to represent the gentle, apex-up curvature of B. grandis, the model turns venter-up; but the added buoyancy of a few adapical chambers (quadripartite hydrostatic system) keeps the model in stable life position. I propose that the curvature functioned to stabilize the adult shell against rolling and pitching during forward swimming. Preadult and most adult baculitids were bipartite megaplankters with quasi-vertical posture and probably long-range vertical migrants, whereas adult B. grandis and other species with tri- or quadripartite shells were probably nektonic with relatively efficient forward-swimming potential; backward swimming was impossible. It appears that all species and growth stages were planktivorous vertical migrants in the middle to basal water column, preying on planktic and demersal microfauna above the seafloor and around methane-seeping seamounts that protruded above bottom dysoxia. -
