ABSTRACT The Strigoceratidae ofthe Bajocian ofthe Subbetic Zone are studied. Eight species belonging to the above mentioned family are described and illustrated; one belongs to Praestrigites, four to S. (Strigoceras), two to S. (Cadomoceras) and one to Hebetoxyites, the latter being a genus that has not previously been described in the Mediterranean area. The detailed biostratigraphy of the Strigoceratidae in the Subbetic Zone are present and their phyllogenetic aspect is considered.

The Early Triassic Smithian/Spathian Boundary (SSB) crisis coincides with an episode of extreme warmth. A high resolution stratigraphic framework comprising six conodont zones is provided in Jiarong section, Nanpanjiang Basin, South China. Detailed size measurements of 441 conodont elements of the closely related genera Neospathodus, Triassospathodus and Novispathodus show for the first time that this clade suffered a temporary, but significant, size reduction during the SSB crisis. Size reduction of conodonts was probably caused by an episode of global warming. Keywords: Conodont; size variation; Early Triassic; extinction; South China. Latest Bajocian

B Nr. 373 74 S., 35 Abb. Stuttgart, 28. 12. 2007 Revision of the Middle Jurassic dimorphic ammonite genera Strigoceras/Cadomoceras (Strigoceratidae) and related forms GÜNTER SCHWEIGERT, VOLKER DIETZE, ROBERT BARON CHANDLER & VASILII MITTA Facies non omnibus una, nec diversa tamen. OVID, Metamorphoses Abstract We present a modern revision of the dimorphic ammonite pair Strigoceras QUENSTEDT, 1886/Cadomoceras MUNIER-CHALMAS, 1892 from the Middle Jurassic. The stratigraphically oldest hitherto known chronospecies of Strigoceras, S. praenuntium (BUCKMAN) appears in the Middle Aalenian as an extreme rarity. Records of the microconch genus Cadomoceras re- main unknown from strata older than Early Bajocian, but otherwise its stratigraphical range corresponds well with that of the macroconchs. The genus probably became extinct in the Early Bathonian (Zigzag Zone). The youngest known Strigoceras is S. callomoni n. sp. descri- bed here from the Macrescens Subzone of the Early Bathonian. Another new strigoceratid species, Granulochetoceras oppeliisculptum n. sp., is recorded by a single specimen from the early Garantiana Zone of eastern Spain, representing an interesting phyletic link between Stri- goceras QUENSTEDT, 1886 and Granulochetoceras GEYER, 1960. We include a brief review of the latter genus. By including Granulochetoceras in the Strigoceratidae the family would ex- tend to the Late Kimmeridgian of the Late Jurassic. The palaeogeographic distribution of Strigoceras/Cadomoceras is focussed on the western Tethyan Province, but some species also occur in the northern Pacific and its adjacent shelves. A benefit of this large area of distribution is that strigoceratids may be used to correlate distant locations, but this is partly hampered by the relatively wide range of variability within succeeding chronospecies and remarkably large variation in size of adult macroconchs.

  • Ammonoid Intraspecific Variability

This approach is based on actualistic com- parisons with the closest relatives of ammonoids, the Coleoidea and the Nautilida, and on the geometrical and physical properties of the shell. Anatomical comparison yields information on the locomotor muscu- lar systems and organs as well as possible modes of propulsion while the shape and physics of ammonoid shells provide information on buoyancy, shell orientation, drag, added mass, cost of transportation and thus on limits of acceleration and swimming speed. On these grounds, we conclude that ammonoid swim- ming is comparable to that of Recent nautilids and sepiids in terms of speed and energy consumption, although some ammonoids might have been slower swimmers than nautilids. VOL. 32 - N° 1, 2013 Revue de Paléobiologie, Genève (juin 2013) 32 (1): 249-265 ISSN 0253-6730 Hydrostatics, propulsion and life-habits of the Cretaceous ammonoid Baculites Gerd WESTERMANN1 Abstract Experiments with test models support the computer models of orthoconic nautiloids of Westermann (1977). (1) Thin-walled shells with long body-chambers and empty phragmocones (bipartite hydrostatic system) were neutrally buoyant with stable vertical orientation; variants with different wall thickness and body-chamber shape changed the proportions. The test models resemble the real preadult and most adult Baculitidae and support the common assumption that baculites were planktic vertical migrants. (2) The test models also show that flooding of most adapical chambers of thin-walled orthocones (tripartite hydrostatic system) could achieve neutral equilibrium; the body-chamber was reduced (brevidomic) but the unstable orientation permitted horizontal swimming. Scale models of adult Baculites from the North American Western Interior seaway replicate this brevidomic computer model with unstable orientation. Modified to represent the gentle, apex-up curvature of B. grandis, the model turns venter-up; but the added buoyancy of a few adapical chambers (quadripartite hydrostatic system) keeps the model in stable life position. I propose that the curvature functioned to stabilize the adult shell against rolling and pitching during forward swimming. Preadult and most adult baculitids were bipartite megaplankters with quasi-vertical posture and probably long-range vertical migrants, whereas adult B. grandis and other species with tri- or quadripartite shells were probably nektonic with relatively efficient forward-swimming potential; backward swimming was impossible. It appears that all species and growth stages were planktivorous vertical migrants in the middle to basal water column, preying on planktic and demersal microfauna above the seafloor and around methane-seeping seamounts that protruded above bottom dysoxia.

Three species have been identified: H. hebes BUCKMAN, H. incongruens BUCKMAN and H. mouterdei FERNÁNDEZ-LÓPEZ. Indigenous populations of these Tethyan species in the Iberian carbonate platform system, including macroconchs and microconchs, are interpreted as immigration and colonization of shallowwater marine environments by Submediterranean taxa during a short interval of the early Bajocian. As peramorphic result of palingenetic evolution, a chronocline from strongly ribbed, stout forms of the Ovale Zone (including H. mouterdei), to oxycones with blunt, simple or irregularly branched ribbing of the Laeviuscula Zone (including H. incongruens), through intermediate forms belon- ging to H. hebes, has been recognized. These successive species of Hebetoxyites provide a basis for correlation and subzonal division of the Ovale and Laeviuscula zones in the Iberian Range. Abstract Ammonite faunas are described from the submicrostoma (Submicrostoma Subzone) and giebeli horizons (Multiformis Subzone) of the Giebeli Zone (Lower Bajocian, Middle Jurassic) of the Manflas area (Chile, Copiapó Province). • 'Sex Reversals' in the Ammonoidea and Their Signi Cance
Another Lesson From Beautiful Monsters: the Case of 'sex Reversals' in the Ammonoidea and Their Signicance Camile Frau ( [email protected] ) Groupement d'Intérêt Paléontologique, Science et Exposition, 35 Impasse lieutenant Daumas 83100 Toulon, France Pierre-Yves Boursicot Research Article Keywords: Ammonoidea, Sexual dimorphism, Intersexuality, Pathology, Jurassic Posted Date: February 2nd, 2021 DOI: https://doi.org/10.21203/rs.3.rs-157754/v1 License: This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. During the Mesozoic, the best documented sexual dimorphic examples are seen in the Jurassic superfamily Perisphinctoidea. It is most usually expressed by distinct adult size and apertural modications between the antidimorphs. Putative males (otherwise referred to as microconch) are small in size and develop lappets at the end of the shell while the females (macroconch) are larger and bear a simple peristome. Dubious cases are, however, known in that superfamily. They most often relate to taxonomic biases or lack of diagnostic characters, and some others expose ontogenetic anomalies illustrated by ‘sex reversals’ in the shell morphology and ornamentation. Results: The discovery of two specimens of the Callovian Aspidoceratidae Peltoceras athleta (Phillips), having both female and male features, questions the signicance and causes of ‘sex reversals’ in the Ammonoidea. The two specimens have started with the macroconch ontogeny of Peltoceras athleta, and show an apparent change toward maleness in the adult, as illustrated by their rounded whorl section, ribs retroversion, fading of the tubercles and lappets typical of the microconchs.

Bajocian ammonoids from Pumani River area (Ayacucho, Peru): Palaeobiogeographical and palaeoenvironmental implications for the Arequipa Basin b b b Sixto Fernandez-Lopez a,*, Victor Carlotto , Edwin Giraldo , Cesar Chacaltana a Departamento Paleontologia, Facultad Ciendas Geol6gicas, calle Jose Antonio Novais,2, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 28040 Madrid, Spain b Instituto Geol6gico Minero y Metalurgico (INGEMMET), Av. Canada 1470, San Borja, Lima, Peru ABSTRACT Deposits of the Socosani Formation in the Pucayacu and Pumani sections (Ayacucho Department, Peru), along several kilometres, have yielded Upper Bajocian ammonoid fossil-assemblages characterized by the occurrence of juvenile individuals belonging to endemic or pandemic genera, such as Mega sphaeroceras and Spiroceras respectively. In addition, certain Bajocian genera relatively common in the Keywords: Mediterranean-Caucasian Sub realm, but very scarce in the Eastern Pacific Subrealm, such as the stri Ammonites goceratid Cadomoceras and the phylloceratid Adabofoloceras, occur in this area. The faunas are correlated with those from the Giebeli Zone of the Paso del Espinacito section and the Neuquén Basin in Argentina. There is evidence for one additional, still un- described faunal horizon in the top of the Multiformis Subzone with an “unusual sonniniid assemblage”. One new species, Latiwitchellia atacamensis n. sp., is erected. Key words: Ammonites, Chile, Lower Bajocian biozonation, eastern Pacific 1. Introduction For a general introduction we refer to Dietze & Hillebrandt (2012), who described in detail the am- monites and stratigraphy of the Lower Bajocian Sin- gularis Zone of the area around Manflas (Copiapó Province, Northern Chile, SE Copiapó; Text-fig. 1). Here we describe the stratigraphy of the next young- er Giebeli Zone (Text-fig. 2) and the ammonites col- lected from the corresponding beds by one of us (AvH) between 1966 and 1972.
