Four Doors to Meeting for Worship William Taber, Pendle Hill Pamphlet #306, 1992 Northeast Montgomery Count y This pamphlet is one of a handful of classics that explain the essence of Quaker faith and practice. This pamphlet describes “what happens” in a Quaker meetingInter infa contemporaryith Minist language.erium’s In it, he uses the metaphor of a river as the Divine Stream, an eternal reality that has been present from the beginning of time, the Logos, always here within us and beside us, into which we can step any time. He states, “the heart of worshipAn nisu communional Servic withe to this G iinvisibleve Tha butnk eternals stream of reality in which is the living and eternal Christ.” A way to enter the stream is to imagine passing through four consecutive doors that lead into and through the meeting for worship. “Lend a Helping Hand” First door: The Door Before - This describes those times of a worshipful state of consciousness anytime during the week that grant spiritual nourishment. Since such experiences help us let go of preoccupations and distractions of the week, we enter the stream more quickly and easily. Entering the Door Before can be “thought of as dipping again and again into the living stream, so that when we come to the Sunday meeting for worship we are returning to a familiar reality which has been renewing and tenderizing us all week.”

Second door: The Door InwardTuesd -a Historically,y some Friends have always been called to spend a special time in personal “retirement” on Sunday morning before worship. This “pre-worship” attentiveness begins to gather the meeting into the Living Stream. There are many methods used to enterN theov Dooremb Inward.er These rituals all have the qualities of desire to be in the Presence, focus toward a relaxed alertness, and trust to go out2 6into, 2 the01 deep9 water and rest in the Living Waters of the Stream. Most people find as we learn to relax about doing the right thing and learn what if feels like just to be present, techniques become far less important than our desire to be fully present. 7:30pm

Third door: The Door Within - While a typical meeting for worship will show no outward sign when the silence becomes deeper, participants experience it aSs aif nthed ymeeting is lifted into another state of consciousness. The unity produced what is called a “settled” or “gathered” meeting. This SDoorprin Inwardg is the most important stage, drawing us into the stream of renewing and healing energy that reaches back and forward across time with the mysterious flow that unites all. Here it becomes safe for the ego to relax as a sense of corporate God-consciousnessFri eemerges.nds In this more expansive, less judgmental state of awareness, the transformative power of the Light can heal minds and bodies,Scho obringl – insights and new perceptions, and offer comfort and peace to troubled souls. In such a gathered meeting, vocal ministry arises out of the inward motion of the Spirit, and the message tends to be more “absorbed” than merely heard. Theater Fourth door: The Door Beyond - Going out the Door Beyond into the more normal state of everyday life, we leave changed with renewed energy, vision, and1 6resolve.923 When meeting ends, a handshake offers a promise to go forth with new eyes and greater faithfulness after being nurtured by the Divine Stream. SSMM CHRISTMAS PAGEANT 4pm Dec 20, 2020. In this, our last year of co-coordinating the pageant we have listened to ideas, walked the property to look at it through the lens of COVID-19, heard from Friends a desire for some form of the pageant we have arrived at the ideas listed below. Julie Eagle and Jen Cort THE GOAL: To continue the tradition of our beloved Christmas Pageant while keeping our community safe. THE CHALLENGE: Since singing and close contact is dangerous for spreading the virus, there is a way of doing an outdoor version of the program that includes masks, social distancing, and community involvement in a safe way. THE LIVING NATIVITY: Bring the manger to life on the steps of the Meeting House. Keep the number of child participants to 10. Children will be masked and socially distanced from one another with the manger situated on the steps of the Meeting House and shepherds and animals spread out in the grassy parking lot circle. A recording of the Christmas songbook is played over speakers. The community can walk around the circle spaced out in family groups or, if they’re not able, they can drive through to witness the Live Nativity. We will EMAIL the songbook and the recorded ZOOM link for people who cannot attend and still wish to participate. THE CAST: Mary & Joseph, 2 Angels, 3 Wise People, 3 Shepherds. The baby Jesus will need to be a baby doll. There can be 1 “Reader” of the Christmas story from the Bible, or we can record along with the music. THE MUSICIANS: We can record musicians playing through the songbook ahead of time and playback the recording while the Children walk through the program outside the Meeting House. We can also invite the musicians to play along on the day of the program if they are comfortable doing so. We can move the enclosed Fire Pitt to the side of the Meeting House to warm musicians should they choose to play. THE SET: We can transform the steps of the Meeting House into a Manger scene with several bales of hay, a bench for Mary & Joseph to sit on and a STAR of Bethlehem hanging above them. The Angels can flank the manger scene on either side, and Wise People could sit on the steps after they present the Baby Jesus with their gifts. On the grassy parking lot circle, we can have benches for the Shepherds to sit on (socially distanced) while tending their sheep, goats and donkeys. THE LOGISTICS: The audio speaker from the Meeting House would need to be brought outside for music playback and a computer to capture the event on Zoom. The Reader would need a microphone, unless we record the reading ahead of time. The 10 children will be socially distanced as they sit & keep warm in the Meeting House and await their cue to enter the manger scene. THE COMMUNITY: We would need people (who are able to) to park at the end of Meeting House Road and walk to the starting point near the Community House. Several volunteers would cue MASKED people to process safely from each MARKED point until they walk around the entire circle and back again to the Community House. We would also need to alert the neighbors so they are aware that the road will be used. A volunteer will need to make sure any cars do not interfere with people safely walking. We will remind Friends that they’ll need to keep any outward singing to a soft whisper. THE DATE: Ideally, we’d plan for Sun Dec 20 at 3:00 pm so it would be in the warmest part of the day. There was also talk of doing this in the evening, in which case, we’d need to consider lighting the manger, the parking lot “barnyard” and walking path around the circle. INCLEMENT WEATHER: In case of rain, we’d plan for a tent rental from SSFS to cover the grassy parking area to shelter the Shepherds & animals. Mary & Joseph, the Wise People and Angels would be sheltered by the overhang of the Meeting House. We’d need to consider the circumstances by which we would CANCEL the event if the weather was unsafe or too severe to be outdoors for any length of time. BUDGET: In past years, we only needed about $150 for animals being brought to campus but this year, we will need both animals and have other expenses to support the changes. However, because we will not have the lunch afterward the Hospitality Committee will have reduced expenses. The pageant does not have a budget - we believe it comes from RE.
