The musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is based on both the biblical story of Joseph in Genesis, chapters 37 and 39-46, and the story of Yusef al Korim (Joseph the Wise) in the Koran.

The original Joseph on Broadway was Bill Hutton, Evansville native and FJ Reitz High School graduate. In 2005, the touring production of Joseph starring Patrick Cassidy opened nationally in Owensboro, Ky. There are 29 colors listed in “Joseph’s Coat”.

The musical evolved from a 15-minute presentation in 1968 in Westminster Hall. Tim Rice has provided lyrics for Disney’s The Lion King and Aida, both composed by Elton John. Andrew Lloyd Webber has composed 11 musicals, including the 2006 WPEF Summer Musical CATS. The coat being used in the new production of Joseph spans 12 meters (39 feet) and cost £10,000 ($20,000).

Craig Chalmers as Joseph in the new UK Production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

21 notes from the director Why Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat? Choosing a show for the summer musical always presents a unique set of challenges and deciding factors for the production staff to consider. Th is year has certainly proven to present its share of unique and exciting challenges. Due to renovation plans at Castle High School, we were informed that we would need to fi nd an alternate venue to present this year’s summer musical. After several meeting and discussions with the members of the production staff , we came up with a list of possible venues and possible shows that could work in these particular performance spaces. Th e one thing that we all agreed upon was the importance of keeping the program running for all of these terrifi c students who have been a part of this program over the years. After exploring a number of options, we were fortunate enough to be welcomed by First Christian Church with open arms. From the beginning they have recognized the unique opportunity that the summer musical provides for so many young people and have worked diligently with us to allow us to continue to provide this learning opportunity for them. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has been a favorite show of many members of the production staff for many years. With our opportunity to perform a show at First Christian Church this summer, Joseph seemed like the perfect fi t. So, we are excited to have this opportunity to “take the show on the road” for the fi rst time in the history of the Warrick Summer Musical Program. About the Show Th e history of Joseph goes back to 1968 when Andrew Lloyd Webber created a 15-minute pop cantata in London. After several small productions of the play in England and the United States and many additions to make the show longer, Joseph fi nally reached Broadway in January 1982 at the Royale Th eatre where it ran for 749 performances, featuring Evansville native Bill Hutton. Th e show continued to grow in popularity and in length over the years. In 1991, the “expanded” version of Joseph was staged at the London Palladium and featured soap opera star Jason Donovan in the title role. Th e following year, Donny Osmond starred in a North American tour of the show that eventually spent a long stint in Chicago (where summer musical director Eric Antey had the pleasure of seeing the production). Following the success of Osmond as Joseph, a movie version of the production was made in 1999. In 2007, the London prime-time Saturday evening series Any Dream Will Do!, sought a new leading man to play Joseph. More than 3 million viewers cast telephone votes during the series fi nal and made 25-year-old West End understudy Lee Mead “offi cially the people’s Joseph.” Th e show continues to enjoy popularity across the world, mainly because Webber’s idea of this “pop oratorio” to tell the story of Joseph and his Coat of Many Colors is one that he felt should be “playful and light” in its eff orts to relate common themes of temptation, greed and forgiveness. We believe that that this story is a timeless one that can be told in any time or any place. We hope that you enjoy what we believe is a fun and playful production that holds true to Webber’s concept of the musical. Enjoy this “story of a boy whose dreams came true… he could be you.”
