The history of the Black church in America comes to life in a moving four-hour series from Finding Your Roots host, Henry Louis Gates Jr. The centerpiece of Black History Month on WTVP, The Black Church: This is Our Story. This is Our Song. reveals how African Americans have worshipped and found ways to bring their faith traditions from Africa to the New World. For many, the Black church is simply a house of worship. For some, it is ground zero for social justice. For others, it is a place of cultural gifts exported to the world, from the soulful voices of preachers and congregants, to the sublime sounds of gospel music. Discover the broad history and culture of the Black church and explore African American faith communities on the front lines of hope and change. This two-part series includes interviews with media executive and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey; singer, songwriter, producer and philanthropist John Legend; singer and actress Jennifer Hudson; Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry; gospel legends Yolanda Adams, Pastor Shirley Caesar and BeBe Winans; civil rights leaders the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. William Barber II; scholar Cornel West and many more. “Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. has created an extraordinary fi lm which deepens understanding, fosters conversation and so beautifully connects our country’s past to our present.” — Paula Kerger, PBS President and CEO PART ONE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 8 PM Host Henry Louis Gates Jr. explores the roots of African American religion, beginning with the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the extraordinary ways enslaved Africans preserved and adapted their faith practices under the brutal realities of human bondage. Learn how independent Black churches fl ourished after the Civil War, helping to fulfi ll the social, educational, fi nancial, cultural and political needs of the formerly enslaved. Gates highlights the stories of key fi gures such as Richard Allen and Jarena Lee of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, abolitionist Frederick Douglass, Henry McNeal Turner, and Virginia Broughton and Nannie Helen Burroughs of the National Baptist Convention. 4 4 4 February 2021 Guide. PART TWO TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 8 PM The Black church expands its reach to address social inequality and minister to those in need in the Jim Crow South and during the Great Migration and the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s. After the violent loss of leaders like the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., many Black churches struggled to remain relevant in an era of increasing secularization while reckoning with urgent social and culturalural issues. The series brings the story of the Black Church up to the present — a time of renewed struggle for racial justice in America.
