Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time November 4, 2018

It is my great pleasure to announce that on Friday, October 26th Fr. Owen was installed as Magisterial Chaplain for the Order of Malta in St. Patrick’s Cathedral by Cardinal Dolan. This is both a responsibility and a privilege. In his new role Fr. Owen received the title of . I congratulate Fr. Owen on his new role as Magisterial Chaplain for the Order of Malta. I take this opportunity to explain the title Canon, since this title is quite unusual for us as American Catholics. During the 18th century John Carroll, the first bishop in the United States, decided not to bring the tradition of Canons to the US. In reality, most Canons to this day are mainly honorary and no longer have a real function. In the past, they used to be responsible for electing a Diocesan administrator until Rome was able to appoint a new Bishop. This was very useful in times when communication was very slow. Generally Canons are priests that form part of a , who gather to pray and live together. Thus, they are intimately connected to the diocese since they are linked to the Cathedral. A Canon can only use his title and privileges within his own diocese; it is a title that is linked to the position, not the person. Honorary Canons, such as Fr. Owen, are given the title and privileges, but are non-residential and receive the title personally from Rome through the Order of Malta. This implies that Fr. Owen, in becoming a Magisterial Chaplain, joined the Chapter of other Canons who serve for the Order of Malta. Furthermore, since this Chapter is not linked to a diocese, such as a Cathedral Chapter, he carries the title and privileges throughout the Universal Church, most appropriately when participating at Order of Malta liturgies. While it might sound strange to our ears, congratulations Canon Owen. Alex

Congratulations Fr. Owen on your elevation to Magisterial Chaplain of the Order of Malta. Fr. Owen cares a lot about prisoners and about those who are ill. He uses his gifts generously to help the alienated, the sick and the dying. We all know how much he loves St. Rose and cares for parishioners. Congratulations to my priest – I’m proud of you. Fr. Matthew

It is my pleasure to give a short history of the Order of Malta. Founded as early as the 1070’s by Blessed Gerard to care for the sick pilgrims visiting the Holy Land, the Order of John of Jerusalem, better known today as the Order of Malta, is a lay religious order of the Roman . The Order is governed by the , who has the dignity of a Cardinal and who, in his capacity as head of a religious order, reports directly to , the . The objectives of the Order of Malta are two-fold: the care for the sick and the poor and to give witness to the Roman Catholic faith. With headquarters in Rome, the Order operates hospitals, orphanages, soup kitchens, leprosaria and ambulance corps. The Order has national associations and priories in sixty countries, with 12,500 members and 80,000 trained volunteers who perform charitable works in more than 120 countries. I’m thrilled and honored with my elevation. It is with great joy that I use my gifts for the Parish of St. Rose, the Diocese of Paterson and the Order of Malta. Fr. Owen

The children also enjoyed a bouncy house, face painting, tattoos, a balloon artist, games and a candy station. Several volunteers came to help the children with the games and crafts. A Big THANK YOU goes out to the parents and the staff of the Early Childhood Center, who helped with the set up and the clean-up of this event.
