This took place at the Wyllyotts Centre and we thank the Over 60 Club committee for providing the use of the kitchen and venue. There are so many people to thank, but they need to be mentioned as we do live in a very caring community. [email protected] Working in the Community Swimming Instructors for people with disabilities The focus this time is on volunteers working in the community. The volunteers are the three Davids who, with others, help people with disabilities to be safe in water and to develop their skills at the Barracuda Swimming Club. David Miller is the Chairman of the club, which meets at the Furzefield Pool every Sunday morning throughout the year, except when Christmas and Boxing Days fall on a Sunday. David has been involved for 18 years, ever since he was introduced to it by his brother whose son was disabled. He is also organisation instructor, assisting from the poolside rather than in the water. David Alleeson is the Vice Chairman, Treasurer and Assistant Team Manager. Some 30 years ago, he saw a notice about Barracuda at Barnet Hospital and took his 7-year old disabled son, Nigel, along to learn to swim. David then began to help in the water and learnt the one-to-one based Halliwick Method from the instructors. He now helps with group activities, and Nigel is Team Manager, taking part in galas and championships. Prior to Nigel taking over, David was Team Manager and also timekeeper. He explained that each swimmer is timed so that there is a target to work towards, and in galas and competitions the races are run on a time handicap, with competitors starting at different times. Cups, shields and medals have been awarded at competitions, and the club gives its members badges for achievement and certificates for improvement of times. David A. also helps to organise social events for the swimmers and helpers. Last year the club celebrated its 40th anniversary and a trip was arranged to the miniature railway at the North London Society of Model Engineering in Colney Heath. David Linnell, secretary and tuition instructor, has been with the club about 30 years. He first heard about it through Rotaract which periodically went to Barracuda to help with the swimming. David had some formal training in the various holds, games, exercises, and ways of dealing with certain situations, and passes on his knowledge to other helpers. All three Davids remarked how much satisfaction they derive from doing something for the community, seeing people of all ages and abilities enjoying themselves in Congratulations to Acker, the water, perhaps doing some movements or actions they never thought they could do, or even swimming after a long time trying. [email protected] Potters Bar Theatre Company Our first play in 2009 will be Arthur Miller’s classic drama, The Crucible, slightly later than usual, at Wyllyotts Theatre, Potters Bar from 11th–14th March 2009. Witch hunts, devil worship, seduction – what more can you want in a play? Yet in The Crucible Arthur Miller, certainly one of the greatest dramatic writers of modern times, has woven so much more into this true story of the Witches of Salem, where truth and humanity fight ignorance and fear. It is a warm, intensely human play about real people in real situations and will be a profoundly moving experience for all – do come and see it! Finally the last production in the year will be the musical Sweeney Todd made popular by the recent film, starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter. In this black comedy musical, Sweeney – with the aid of his razor – exacts a terrible revenge cheerfully helped by Mrs Lovett who is delighted to give new life to her flavourless meat pies! The famous story of the barber who murdered his customers, has wonderful music and is both funny and dramatic. This will take place at Wyllyotts Theatre, 21st–25th April 7.45 each evening plus a matinee on Saturday 25th April at 2.45pm. For tickets for both these productions contact – BOX OFFICE No. 07855 42204 or you can Logon and buy on www.ticketsource.co.uk/PBTC. Potters Bar Community News Potters Bar Choral Society Music to Celebrate Two Anniversaries This year is the 200th anniversary of the death of the composer Joseph Haydn. In recognition of this event we will sing his beautiful ‘Maria Theresa Mass’ on March 7th, 2009, 7.30pm at the Church of King Charles the Martyr, Mutton Lane. Other music to be performed at that concert include the popular and well known Vivaldi ‘Gloria’ and Poulenc’s ‘Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani’. The Aurelian Ensemble will accompany us with conductor/organist Simon Pusey and soloists Michelle Harris (mezzo), Julie Gray (soprano), Rodney Gibson (baritone) and Stephen George (tenor). This season is also the 50th anniversary of the death of the much loved English composer, Ralph Vaughan-Williams. We will be singing his settings of folk songs on Saturday May 16th 2009 as part of our ‘Music for a Summer’s Evening’ concert at St Mary’s Church, The Walk. This event is devoted to music by British composers and also includes madrigals by Dowland, Tye and Bennet, songs and settings of traditional music by Bob Chilcott and much more. By popular demand, Michele Harris will join us to perform solos in her own inimitable, exuberant and irresistible fashion. Last year was highly successful musically, with a sell-out performance of Brahms’ ‘German Requiem’ in May. Our Christmas Concert in December, in which the centre piece was Vaughan-Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols, was also greatly appreciated by the audience. Other highlights of that concert included the powerful modern piece by Mathias ‘A Child is Born’ and the beautiful readings of Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Mark Rice-Oxley. We Follow the hope to continue to provide entertainment of the same high standard at our next two concerts.
