Subtitle Netball Northern Newsletter April 2014 Title Subtitle Netball Northern Newsletter April 2014 I am sure you are all now well prepared for another busy netball season ahead. I cant believe that we are already over half way through the ANZ Championship season, time really flies by once it gets started and I’m sure you all feel the same about your busy seasons. As you will be able to read in Trish’s report we are delighted to announce an initiative being driven by Netball NZ to strengthen the governance in all of the Zones’ across NZ. I think this is a really worthy concept and hope that as many of you as possible will be able to attend. Dates have not been set yet, but we intend to schedule once everyone’s seasons are complete.TYPE TAGLINE HERE IN THIS ISSUE The Community Netball staff have been incredibly active working with the centres and netball community again. We have been short staffed in the Northern Centres (just completing an appointment process now) and have a new Development Officer in the South ( welcome Tracey!), so unfortunately this has put a lot of pressure on Trish’s time. Please bare with us – with limited resources it is difficult to get to every event, meeting and opening, but we are certainly doing our best! The Under 23 programme and now team is shaping up really well. I wish Kiri and her team all the best over the next few months, with some exciting pre-tournament games coming up as well. Julie Paterson – CEO Netball Northern Zone Marketing/Communications Tash Osborne As we quickly approach the last quarter of the season, time for a quick update on recent milestones/achievements for the Northern Mystics. • Sunday 20th of April saw the Northern Mystics head to Hamilton to take on the Waikato/BOP Magic. This game marked an impressive milestone for mid court star, Laura Langman, 100 consecutive games in the ANZ Championship League. Fitting that it hits on the game/team where she played the majority of those 100 games. Langman is the first player in the ANZ Championship to crack the 100 game milestone. Board Chair Dianne McActeer was there to present a gift to Langman at the Magic game to mark the occasion. • Maria Tutaia is also due to hit the 100 game mark in round 13, a home game against the West Coast Fever. • Mystics’ shooter Cathrine Latu is the most accurate shooter in the ANZ HEADING 4 STYLE Championship after seven rounds with her 223 goals coming at 94.5 percent accuracy. Latu has missed just 13 shots at goal this season, and shot two consecutive games at 100% (Firebirds/Steel). Latu has also picked up consecutive MVP Awards – (Steel/Tactix). • Defender Julie Corletto has been named in the Australian Diamonds squad for 2014. Corletto will join the 18-player squad , who will vie for selection in the Australian Commonwealth Games Team ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. • Round 7 - Northern Mystics v Mainland Tactix had record crowd numbers at the Trusts Arena - over 4200 - a full house. Huge thanks to The Trusts who supported a Schools Special ticket deal - which was well received by the community. Schools Special Ticket Deal Huge thank you to those centres who helped push out our last School Special - it worked so well we are doing it again for the upcoming match against the Southern Steel (Sun 4th May). If we could again ask for assistance is promoting this via your contacts, and at any holiday programmes you are running. An attached PDF version of the flyer is attached. Community Netball Trish Wilcox – Community Netball Manager Tracey Spence – NDO Counties Manukau Anne Nicholson – Junior Netball Development Officer Jan Skilton – Umpire Development Officer The season is well underway with most centres completing their grading rounds and now heading into first competition rounds after Easter. Let us know if your centre is having an open day and we will endeavour to be there. Before we know it the representative season will be underway, so if any centre needs support or guidance with representative trials, processes etc, do not hesitate to contact your Zone’s Community Netball Manager - Trish Wilcox. After Jane Huria’s excellent presentation at the Netball New Zealand AGM, we are pleased to have confirmed a work programme which is supported by Sport New Zealand, to assist Netball strengthen our governance. Otara Netball Club Opening Day Jane Huria will facilitate a five hour workshop for our Zone Centres ,specifically targeted for Centre Chairs and CEO. This will be scheduled for the end of the season and will take the following format:- • Sport NZ Governance essentials, including best practice principles • Discussion on current key issues and how these might be addressed • How to align with over-arching Netball strategy • Further information to follow regarding a date and venue. Netball Development - Counties Manukau – Tracey Spence It was great to be a part of the opening day for Otara Netball Club, Robin Garner President of HPNC of whom Otara are affiliated was in attendance, Kelston Boys High – MT & M workshops with Temepara Bailey shooting the opening goal of the day. Volunteers have worked effortlessly to create an environment for players and whanau to be able to come together and enjoy community spirit within their centre. The club has increased their volume of players to 500 this year and it’s looking like a bright future ahead of them. Good luck and we look forward to visiting the centre soon. A big thank-you to Sports Co-Ordinator Tony Humphries from Kelston Boys High for engaging in the MT&M Workshop. It was a privilege to be able to facilitate the workshop to the boys and see how they could adapt and apply the resource to other codes of sport. Their enthusiasm and leadership qualities were outstanding . This was a first not only for me, but also Netball Northern. We look forward to further engagement with the ANC -Year 1 – 3 Taster Day. These Year 3 players are school in the future. participating in a warm-up activity from the Year 3 & 4 Coach Resource called Scatter Cones. Junior Netball – Anne Nicholson It’s all happening; Information Sessions, Workshops and Taster Days throughout the Zone. Centres are working through the NNZ Junior Netball Endorsement Process to be recognised as an endorsed provider of this programme. “Junior Netball is Changing” and Junior Netball is growing enthusiastically fast through the Zone. To date 95 Yr 1 & 2 Star Helpers, 36 Year 3 & 4 Coaches and 33 Junior Co-ordinators have been trained from half of the Northern Zone Netball Centres and many more Workshops are being held over the next few weeks before the season starts in Term 2. Pukekohe Netball Centre, who piloted the Yr 1 & 2 programme last year, has had an early start to their season with 18 Year 3 teams already playing this season. Registrations for their Year 1 & 2 players are still coming in for their season starting next term. Meanwhile Kaipara and AMI Auckland Netball Centres have help successful Taster Days recently. 60 Year 1 to 4 players played the new modified games at Kaipara and 130 Year 1 to 3 players enjoyed their afternoon at AMI Auckland Netball playing the modified games until it got too dark to see. Netball Waitakere, who used their Summer League to pilot the new programme are having to move some of their little teams outside to play this year as they have 41 Year 1 & 2 teams registered to play. Mangonui Netball Centre as featured in the NNZ Junior Netball April 2014 Update has 70 Year 1 & 2 and 80 Year 3 & 4 players involved with the new NNZ Junior Programme. Community Netball – cont’d To date the focus is on education and support for our centres ,to enable the roll out of the new NNZ Junior Netball Programme this year. The Zone will now expand our focus to include schools and has developed a Junior Active in Schools Skills and Coach Education Programme which will also engage the school with their local endorsed Netball Centre. The programme will consist of four skill development activities sessions which are part of the NNZ Junior Programme and an invitation to attend a festival day at their local Centre with other schools from their cluster. Coach education for teachers, parents and volunteers will be available for the school using the Star Helper Workshop. Further details will be available in the near future. Have you ever stopped to think what it is like for our little players to play netball on a Umpire – Tania Law full sized adult court? Click on Netball Northern’s website and find the Resources page of Junior Netball under the Community Netball tab http://www.mynetball.co.nz/zones/northern/community-netball/junior- netball/resources.html and watch adults football coaches try to play football on a field that is much bigger than the full sized football pitch. The field and the goal posts are scaled to be equivalent to what children experience on a full sized pitch. Remember “Children are not mini-sized adults”. Umpire Development – Jan Skilton Congratulations to Tania Law and Lisa Paterson who have been selected by IFN as ITIDs. This means they have been recognised by the International Federation as having the potential to gain the International Umpire Award. Well done Tania and Lisa, the Zone wishes you well as you meet this next challenge. Both Lisa and Tania have been appointed to officiate at the following two Umpire – Lisa Paterson international events: May 5 – 10 : Tri Series in Fiji (Fiji, Ireland and PNG) June 2 – 7 : Pacific Nations Series in Rarotonga (Fiji, Cook Islands, Samoa and PNG) All coach/assessor workshops have now been completed within the Zone.

    A Brief History of Netball and our Tactix Legacy What is Netball? “A new game for girls, about which a good deal will probably be heard in the course of the ensuing summer, is basket-ball. It has already swept the United States, completely eclipsing lawn tennis, and effectually nipping in the bud the threatened revival of croquet….The chief beauty of the game is its simplicity, and the fact that no expensive apparatus is required. Wherever two old baskets, a couple of clothes props, and a ball, are there can it be played.” (Otago Witness, 6 May 1897) The Game The game of netball is derived from the early development of basketball in the USA. The origin of basketball is traditionally credited to James Naismith, a 30-year-old Canadian immigrant to the USA, who in 1891, invented an indoor game for young men at the School for Christian Workers (later the YMCA) in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first games of what's now netball were played on a paddock between nine-a-side teams. The rules allowed three bounces, and throws from one end of the field to the other. Baskets were used for goals and after each goal, the ball was tipped out to restart play. Netball was first played in the UK in 1895 at Madame Ostenburg's College. In the first half of the 20th century, Netball's popularity continued to grow, with the game being played in many British Commonwealth countries. There were no standard rules at that time with both nine-a-side and five- a-side versions of the game.

    Netball Northern Zone Newsletter February 2016 Message from Julie Paterson Inside this issue The 2016 year has got off to a very busy start for the all of us at the Northern 1 Message from CEO Zone. The SKYCITY Mystics season starts on 1 April, and the team have had 2 Community Netball two pre-season games already. The NZ based pre-season event starts on 18 3 Coach Development March at The Trusts Arena, with the formal ANZ Championship season launch 4 Performance being held prior to that. The SKYCITY Mystics season launch is on 10 March as well. 5 Mystics Update In addition to this the BEKO National League launches this month, and the team has been selected and is well underway with training. A formal announcement of the Northern Zone team competing in this league will be made once all members have been approved by Netball NZ. We have also been working hard to support some centres with governance and structural changes as well as spending time working through the regional netball facility strategy. Its also AGM season and we have ensured that a representative from the Zone attends all AGM’s, as well as preparing for our own! While it is a busy time it has been great to see so many positive AGM’s and so many positive and committed people continuing to work hard for their sport. The first SKYCITY Mystics game is on 1 April, so if you haven’t already bought your membership, please do so— and remember Centres get a great rate for corporate hospitality if you wish to host your sponsors or special guests at games.
