The 3rd European Workshop on Sea Buckthorn (EuroWorkS2014) was held in Naantali, Finland on 14th to 16th of October 2014 under the theme “Producing Sea Buckthorn of High Quality”. Conference concentrated on three topics that were recognized to be current under the theme: sea buckthorn fly, cultivation technology and standardization of sea buckthorn. A special attention was paid to sea buckthorn fly because of its rapid and destructive invasion to Europe. Protective measurements need to be studied fast to get this new pest under control. Also long-term strategies are needed in order to continue efficient berry production, also without pesti- cides. Dr. Ljubov Shamanskaja has a long research experience with sea buckthorn fly in Barnaul, Rus- sia, where the fly has been a problem over 20 years. -

Identification key to the subfamilies of Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera) Gavin Broad Dept. of Entomology, The Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD, UK Notes on the key, February 2011 This key to ichneumonid subfamilies should be regarded as a test version and feedback will be much appreciated (emails to [email protected]). Many of the illustrations are provisional and more characters need to be illustrated, which is a work in progress. Many of the scanning electron micrographs were taken by Sondra Ward for Ian Gauld’s series of volumes on the Ichneumonidae of Costa Rica. Many of the line drawings are by Mike Fitton. I am grateful to Pelle Magnusson for the photographs of Brachycyrtus ornatus and for his suggestion as to where to include this subfamily in the key. Other illustrations are my own work. Morphological terminology mostly follows Fitton et al. (1988). A comprehensively illustrated list of morphological terms employed here is in development. In lateral views, the anterior (head) end of the wasp is to the left and in dorsal or ventral images, the anterior (head) end is uppermost. There are a few exceptions (indicated in figure legends) and these will rectified soon. Identifying ichneumonids Identifying ichneumonids can be a daunting process, with about 2,400 species in Britain and Ireland. These are currently classified into 32 subfamilies (there are a few more extralimitally). Rather few of these subfamilies are reconisable on the basis of simple morphological character states, rather, they tend to be reconisable on combinations of characters that occur convergently and in different permutations across various groups of ichneumonids. -
Limited Variability of Genitalia in the Genus Pimpla (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae): Inter- Or Intraspecific Causes?
LIMITED VARIABILITY OF GENITALIA IN THE GENUS PIMPLA (HYMENOPTERA: ICHNEUMONIDAE): INTER- OR INTRASPECIFIC CAUSES? by TIIT TEDER (Institute of Zoologyand Botany, Estonian Agricultural University,Riia 181, EE2400 Tartu, Estonia; Institute of Zoology and Hydrobiology,Tartu University,EE2400 Tartu, Estonia) ABSTRACT We studied the morphometric variability of genitalia in five species of the genus Pimpla (Hymenoptera,Ichneumonidae). This genus is characterizedby a high intraspecificvariation in body size, a simple structure of the genitalia and many closely related species. We found that genitalic characters of all studied species vary less than characters related to body size. However,there exists an overlap in genitalic charactersbetween different species. The pattern of variance and the ecology of the species studied suggests that low variance of genitalia cannot be explained by interspecificcauses (mechanicalisolation) or sperm competition.The most likely explanation for the low variance of genitalia is assuring mechanical fit between male and female during copulation. Sexual selection by female choice may be a cause of the observed pattern of variance as well, if females have active preference for males with larger genitalia. We suggest that genitalia of insects with a large variation in body size vary less than other morphologicalcharacters to ensure intraspecificmechanical fit. INTRODUCTION In various taxonomic groups of insects, both male and female genitalia are often highly species-specific in their morphology. This phenomenon, widely used in taxonomy, has been explained by proposing different inter- and intraspecific selective factors. The first class of explanations is represented by the mechanical lock and key hypothesis, proposed already in the previous century (see SHAPIRO & PORTER, 1989, for review). -

From these organisms, which 15 of parasitoid species were found, those species belonging to 5 families in of the order Hymenoptera (Ichneumonidae, Chalcididae, Eulophidae, Elasmidae, Pteromalidae). Nine of these, in which there were 9 of were ichneumonid wasp species: Xanthopimpla flavolineata, Goryphus basilaris, Xanthopimpla punctata, Itoplectis naranyae, Coccygomimus nipponicus, Coccygomimus aethiops, Phaeogenes sp., Atanyjoppa akonis, Triptognatus sp. We discuss the general biology, habitat preferences, and host association of the knowledge of three of these parasitoids, (Xanthopimpla flavolineata, Phaeogenes sp., and Goryphus basilaris). Including general biology, habitat preferences and host association were indicated and discussed. -

Archips rosana (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a highly polyphagous pest species, has potential economic importance on fruit crops. The present study aimed to gather data on species composition of parasitoids of Archips rosana. It was carried out in the years 2010-2011 in organic cherry orchards in the province of Edirne (Turkey). Twenty-two parasitic hymenopteran species belonging to three families (Ichneumonidae, Braconidae and Chalcididae) and one dipteran species (Tachinidae) were determined. Braconidae was found to be the most frequently represented family with 13 species, followed by Ichneumonidae 8, Chalcididae and Tachinidae with one species, respectively. Parasitoids from the superfamily Ichneumonoidea (Braconidae and Ichneumonidae) turned out to be the most effective, and the dominating species was endoparasitoid Itoplectis maculator (Fabricius, 1775). Archips rosana was found for the first time to serve as a host for Pimpla spuria Gravenhorst, 1829; Scambus buolianae (Hartig, 1838); Bracon (Habrobracon) hebetor Say, 1836; Bracon (Bracon) intercessor Nees, 1834; Meteorus versicolor (Wesmael, 1835) and Meteorus rufus (DeGeer, 1778). This information should be helpful in the development of biological control programs to manage A. rosana in cherry orchards. -

According to investigation results, it was determined that A. rosana damaged on 21 plant species belonging to the families, Aceraceae, Betulaceae, Cornaceae, Leguminosae, Oleceae, Salicaeae, Rosaceae and Ulmaceae. From this pest totally, 11 hymenopteran parasitoid species belonging to Ichneumonidae (4), Pteromalidae (2), Chalcididae (1), Torymidae (2), Eulophidae (1) and Eupelmidae (1) were obtained. The most important parasitoid species is Itoplectus maculator (Ichneumonidae) having 41.48 %. DESANTISI SMITH) (HYM.: TENTHREDINIDAE) IN THE TAFI VALLEY, TUCUMAN, ARGENTINA: FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS Mariela Alderete1, Gerardo Liljesthröm Nematus oligospilus Foerster (= N. desantisi Smith), a Holartic species whose larvae feed on leaves of Salix spp., was recorded in Argentina and Chile in the 1980´s. In the delta of the Paraná river (DP) and in the Tafí valley (VT) in Argentina, the sawfly larval populations attained high densities and severe defoliations were observed: in 1991-92 and 1993-94 in DP, and in 1990-91 and 1994-95 in VT. In VT the sawfly larvae have remained at low density since then and trials excluding natural enemies showed that larval survivorship was significantly higher than in the controls. Further, an intensive sampling over five consecutive years allowed us to perform a key-factor analysis, and larval mortality, possibly due to predators (polyphagous Divrachys cavus was the only parasitoid recorded from less than 1% host larvae), was density-dependent and supposed to be capable of regulating the sawfly population. The DP and VT regions have different ecological conditions: while DP has broad and continuous willow plantations and a humid-temperate climate, VT is an elevated valley bordered by mountains with a sub-humid cold climate (rains are concentrated in spring and summer) with small and rather isolated willow forests. Apart from these differences, both regions show very low parasitoidism, outbreaks shortly after being recorded in the area, and no significant differences between outbreak and no-outbreak years with respect to mean and mean maximum temperatures as well as in accumulated rainfall. -

ÖZBEK Abstract: This is a faunistic and systematic study on the subfamily Pimplinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) occurring in eastern and northeastern parts of Turkey, during 1999-2004. Totally, 55 species in 24 genera and 5 tribes were recognized. Of these, 16 species are new for the Turkish fauna. New distribution areas are added for almost all previous known species. Keys to the tribes, genera and species are prepared. New hostes are designated for some species. Total species in the subfamily Pimplinae have been recorded occurring in Turkey compile 77 species in 30 genera. Introduction The Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera), is a widespread and extremely large family, with an estimated 60.000 extant species in 35 genera worldwide (TOWNES 1969). GAULD (2000) estimated, by extrapolating from recent collections that the total global species-richness of the family will be more than 100.000 species. The family is most species-rich in the temperate regions and the humid tropics; relatively more species in cool moist climates than in warm dry ones (GAULD 1991). -
