The Completion Backward Principle If you're reading this then both of us know you're a Tubes fan, or you were looking for some pool related play-thing for the kids and landed on the wrong page. In either case, you'll want to buy this disk as it's a timeless pop music masterpiece. I won't go into the history of the Tubes other than being a cult band of the 70's in the age of the new cable TV, gas shortages, Nixon and terrible sitcoms the Tubes had found their muse and held it tightly by the throat. And boy did they squeeze that little bugger. The original Tubes records can be broken down into 3 distinct eras. The nightclub era which consists of The Tubes, Young and Rich, and Now - which was a transitional album unfortunately plagued with problems. The first 2 are must haves, the 3rd is as far as Tubes fans go a goody, but not essential. The second phase of the band could almost be called their AOR period or as I refer to it: The Holy Trinity. This consists of Remote Control produced by Todd Rundgren, The Completion Backwards Principle and Outside Inside both produced by David Foster. The final phase and record was Love Bomb (again Rundgren), which sadly, bombed. They regrouped in the 90's and turned out their (so far) latest studio outing, the excellent Genius Of America. The Completion Backwards Principle was based on a corporate motivational training record, and starts with appropriate narration. Songs are based on relationships (or lack thereof), 80's trends, and of course business ethics. Some Tube-o-philes freaked at the site of these guys with haircuts and Brooks Brothers suits, but 30 seconds in most fears were laid to rest. The sound was of its time and still timeless, the riffs and lyrics catchy, yet if you listen - so very tongue in cheek. Yes, this was still The Tubes. Talk To Ya Later was one of their biggest hits, but others stand easily next to it, such as Sushi Girl, Think About Me, Power Tools, Don't Want To Wait Anymore (a song about a boy who doesn't want his girl to wait anymore! wink wink). Wow, I want to go play this right now! There's not a duff song on the whole disk and friends, THIS is what power pop is all about. As for the disk I'm reviewing, the IconoClassic remaster, like I said - it's about time! It has been lovingly remastered and doesn't fall prey to loudness wars or bad re-sequencing, compression, fade-outs etc. While it may sound a bit laid back compared to a modern recording it's open, clear and deep. The mix is well balanced and compares very well to the original recording. The overall sound reminds me very much of the Digital Compact Classics (DCC) without Steve Hoffman, the gold and the price! Plus, they've included 4 bonus tracks, one of which used to be a show staple. If you like The Tubes and are wondering if it's worth getting (especially if you picked up the terrible 2001 remaster) that would be a resounding YES! I only hope that IconoClassic (or somebody) remasters the entire Tubes catalog, because they're all gems in the world of pop/punk/prog. This is a fantastic start, so let's see Remote Control or Outside Inside next please! Oh, and a word about the cover as I see some fellow reviewers don't appreciate it. The cover (as all Tubes covers) was designed jointly by The Tubes' Michael Cotton and Prairie Prince - both multi- talented artists. IMHO it's gorgeous (and I'm a designer). It's iconic, and it screams corporate ID and industrial design as was the intent. The original back photo of the boys going over a blue print of their plan for world domination. The sleeve layout just doesn't hold up on the new CD - even though they did try to reshuffle things to enhance readability, it really was created for a 12x12 LP. As such, it was very well done and entertaining for a corporate training manual concept. A true classic to the last detail. The photos on the IconoClassic are also a bit dark - and there's no way in you-know-what these 50+ year old eyes are gonna make out that 3 point type! Luckily they reprinted the lyrics a bit larger for the inside spread. 5 Stars for the music, not only because I love it but it's a true rock and roll jewel. 5 BIG Stars for the remaster, 3 for packaging (you can't have it all). Thank you Iconclassic! If you can possibly manage the time, please play both sides at one meeting. Iconoclassic Records has done what Capitol should have done. Reissued the most pristine edition of CBP. The drums kick, the guitars chime and the vocals shine. Nothing was lost or overpowered in this mix. Iconoclassic raises the bar where reissues are concerned. All original artwork is preserved. The bonus tracks are finally given a great cd issue. And the liner notes are well worth the price. Double click and add to your cart. You will not be disappointed! Great album by the Tubes but so much better now that they have released the extra track Gonna get it next time from the Modern Problemssoundtrack!Love it!!! See all 30 customer reviews... The Tubes first album for Capitol/EMI found them paired with up and coming producer and songwriter, David Foster in search of a more commercial sound. Many of their A&M albums had been very strong but failed to ignite the charts or build much fan interest beyond their rabid cult. Completion Backward Principle changed all that with 'Talk to Ya Later' (an AOR radio smash) and the chart success of the single 'Don't Want to Wait Anymore'. This edition features new liner notes by noted Rock journalist Brett Milano including fresh interviews with current band members Fee Waybill and Roger Steen.
