  • Journal of Academic Perspectives
Journal of Academic Perspectives Religion, Politics, and Public Discourse: Bruce Springsteen and the Public Church of Roll Frederick L. Downing, Professor of Philosophy & Religious Studies, Valdosta State University and Jonathan W. Downing, Co-Director, Screaming Shih-Tzu Productions Abstract The thesis of this paper is that Bruce Springsteen’s art participates in a musical public square in which the outsider can come up close and overhear a dialogue that has been going on for centuries. Following the work of Robert Detweiler on religion and public life, this paper starts from the premise that the bard’s music, like literature, creates a type of public square or a form of public discourse where urgent matters of human survival, like the nature and nurture of a just state, are expressed, a call for social justice can be heard, and faith and hope for the future can be assimilated. Using the theory of Martin Marty on religion and civic life, the paper further describes Springsteen’s work as the creation of a “public church” beyond sectarian demand which is open to all and approximates, in his language, a true “land of hopes and dreams.” The paper uses the theory of Walter Brueggemann on the ancient church idea to demonstrate the nature and dimension of Springsteen’s “public church.” Using Brueggemann’s theory, Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball album is shown to have both a prophetic and priestly function. As a writer and performer, Springsteen demonstrates on this album and on the Wrecking Ball tour that he not only speaks truth to power, but attempts to create a sense of alternative vision and alternative community to the unjust status quo.

  • Steve Earle Townes Biography
Steve Earle Townes Biography Steve Earle had two reasons for coming out with this long-planned tribute to Townes Van Zandt now. The first reason is practical. Earle is currently pushing himself to finish a years-in-the-making novel, and he wants to see it in print before the publishing business goes belly up. The second is a more personal concern. Like all artists worthy of the name, Steve Earle loves the truth, and in the case of Van Zandt, he sees that the waters are muddying before his eyes. Very often over periods of years, the truth first becomes myth and myth later becomes truth. In regards to his teacher, hero and friend Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle was not about to let that happen. “I’m very thankful that when I got out of jail I started meeting people like Jay Farrar and other people his age that knew Townes chapter and verse,” he says. “I’ve always been very thankful for that. But a lot of what powered that is a take on roots music that comes from alternative music, and the crowd that kind of attached itself to Townes was the same kind of people that have White Light / White Heat in the front of their record collection so everybody knows how intense they are when they have a party. I love that record, but I don’t think I’ve listened to it all the way through since I bought it.” “I’m tryin’ not to kill myself,” he laughs. Van Zandt’s reputation has been under something of an overhaul since the dawn of the 1990s.

  • Shines Atop Mainstream Rock Songs Chart
Royal Blood's 'Lights Out' Shines Atop Mainstream Rock Songs Chart 8/17/2017 by Kevin Rutherford http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7933942/royal-bloods-tops-mainstream-rock-songs-chart The British duo notches its second No. 1 on the airplay ranking. Royal Blood notches its second No. 1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs airplay chart, as "Lights Out" ascends 2-1 on the ranking dated Aug. 26. The UK-based duo led with its prior entry (and third overall), "Little Monster," back on July 25, 2015. Each of Royal Blood's four titles to chart on Mainstream Rock Songs have reached at least No. 3 ("Out of the Black" and "Figure It Out" hit Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, in 2014), placing the band in rarefied air. Only five other acts in the chart's existence, which dates to 1981, has arrived with that kind of success. Here are the acts to reach the Mainstream Rock Songs top three with their first four or more chart entries: First 7, Creed ("My Own Prison"-"With Arms Wide Open"; 1997-2000) 5, The Pretty Reckless ("Heaven Knows"-"Oh My God"; 2014-17) 5, Puddle of Mudd ("Control"-"Away From Me"; 2001-03) 4, Royal Blood ("Out of the Black"-"Lights Out"; 2014-17) 4, Audioslave ("Cochise"-"I Am the Highway"; 2002-04) 4, Days of the New ("Touch, Peel and Stand"- "Enemy"; 1997-99) Of those streaks, two, Royal Blood's included, are still intact; The Pretty Reckless' latest single, "Back to the River," is challenging to become the band's sixth top three hit from the start, bulleting at No.

  • Everybody's Got a Hungry Heart
Everybody’s Got a hungry heart The Duality in Bruce Springsteen by Andy Paine Two hearts This zine is the result of years of trying to explain to various people my love of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. For many, especially those like me who were born after Bruce’s commercial peak with Born In The USA, Bruce Springsteen is like peak hour traffic or the internet or something – so ubiquitous in our subconscious that you never really think about it. On classic hits radio, in karaoke bars, as a trope to be imitated and parodied; his epic songs of cadillacs and highways and American dreams can be seen as just another kitschy relic of another time, or just one more attack in the never-ending onslaught of US pop culture imperialism. I think that’s why some people are surprised to discover my great love of Bruce Springsteen. But love him I do, and my feelings have only grown stronger the older I have gotten. Partial as I am to a good classic rock song or sax solo; it’s Springsteen the lyricist that I love. So many of his songs are little short stories, and these vignettes avoid tales of rockstar excess or high-concept artistic statement. They are stories of ordinary working class people, written in the classic language of ordinary working class people – rock’n’roll. In this way there is certainly a simplicity to Bruce Springsteen. And I’m sure for many listeners, “The Boss” represents a nostalgic ideal of a simpler, rose-tinted Americana.

Rhymes and Linkin Park recently collaborated on “We Made It,” the first single and video from Rhymes’ upcoming album, Blessed. By touring together, Linkin Park & Busta are taking a cue from the chorus of their song: “…we took it on the road…”. As recently pointed out in Rolling Stone’s “Summer Tour Guide,” the tour will see nine acts joining rock superstars Linkin Park, who are also offering concertgoers a digital souvenir pack that includes a recording of the band’s entire set. As the band’s co-lead vocalist Mike Shinoda told the magazine, “That puts extra pressure on us to make sure our set is different every night.” The fifth installation of Linkin Park’s raging road show will see them headlining an all-star bill that features former Soundgarden/Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell, electro-rockers The Bravery and Ashes Divide featuring Billy Howerdel, known for his work with A Perfect Circle.

Case 1:19-cv-25045-JEM Document 1 Entered on FLSD Docket 12/09/2019 Page 1 of 24 UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF FLORIDA MIAMI DIVISION CASE NO. 1:19cv25045 Vicky Cornell, individually, and in her JURY TRIAL DEMANDED capacity, and as the Personal Representative of the Estate of Christopher John Cornell a/k/a Chris Cornell, Plaintiffs, v. Soundgarden, a purported Washington General Partnership, Kim A. Thayil, Matt D. Cameron, Hunter Benedict Shepherd, Rit Venerus and Cal Financial Group, Inc., Defendants. ______________________________________________/ COMPLAINT Plaintiff, Vicky Cornell, individually and in her capacity as the personal representative of the Estate of Christopher John Cornell (collectively, “Plaintiffs”) through counsel, hereby files the following complaint against the defendants, Soundgarden, Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, Hunter Benedict Shepherd, Rit Venerus and Cal Financial Group, Inc. (collectively, “Defendants”). I. INTRODUCTION “Everybody out for my blood, everybody want my percent … They just want to take what is mine, how much more can they get.” - Sweet Revenge 1. In 2009, Chris Cornell penned these lyrics about his former Soundgarden bandmates after they unlawfully (and unsuccessfully) attempted to deprive him of his rights in connection with the valuable musical works that he created for the band. Ten years later, and after Chris’ untimely passing, these lyrics hauntingly resonate as his former bandmates, once Case 1:19-cv-25045-JEM Document 1 Entered on FLSD Docket 12/09/2019 Page 2 of 24 again, have attempted to “take what is his” – or, more aptly, to steal from his widow and minor children. This wrongful conduct shockingly started shortly after Chris’ untimely death and ultimately forced his widow, Vicky Cornell, to bring this lawsuit.

  • Reading the Signs of the Times
Reading the signs of the times The recent tragic death of a rock musician has me thinking about St. Benedict. The musician is Chris Cornell, who died alone in a hotel room in Detroit on May 17. He had been lead singer for Soundgarden and other bands, and his distinctive voice is featured in the films “Casino Royale” and “The Promise.” Cornell caught my attention in 2002 when he co-wrote and performed the hit song “Like a Stone” with his band Audioslave. In the song, a man sits alone in a motel room, getting “lost in the pages” of a book that talks about what happens when we die. And he longs for heaven. It seems the book he finds is the motel room’s free Bible, and one passage he reads is Jn 14:2: “My Father’s house has many rooms.” He spends the day reading, and he regrets his past deeds (“All that I’ve blessed/ And all that I’ve wronged”). He imagines wandering alone through the Father’s house, “room by room,” waiting for God to tell him if there is any room for him. I don’t know if Cornell was thinking of that song in his Detroit hotel room. There is disagreement whether his death was intentional suicide, and some say anti-anxiety medication affected his judgment. We may never know whether despair and depression led him to harm himself and those who cared for him. But the hunger for God in his song is felt by others in our society, even if many distract themselves from it by seeking pleasure and possessions.

  • Audioslave - Revelations: Reigniting the Fire by Evan Parker, Staff Writer
2006-2007 http://www.elsegundousd.com/eshs/bayeagle0607/SeptemberP18Audios... Audioslave - Revelations: Reigniting the Fire by Evan Parker, Staff Writer Just four years ago, even before their self-titled debut album released, critics were quick to label Audioslave simply as "just another supergroup." Well they were right in some respects; they are a rock group, and they are super. Revelations is the follow-up album to 2005's Out of Exile, and is the band's third album release. Being that Out of Exile took nearly three years to complete leaves one to question Revelation's quality, however let me assure you that nothing here has been rushed and that the production value is on par with the group's previous releases. The unexpected brevity of the creation process of the album can be attributed to the group's steadfast dedication to their music. Audioslave is comprised of the common "four-piece" among rock groups, which means there is a vocalist, drummer, guitarist and bassist including backup vocals commonly performed by the instrumentalists. This setup has yielded unlimited success in today's music scene, however the quality of the group depends on the musicians' talent and of course, the producer. Making his first appearance with Audioslave is legendary music producer Brendan O'Brien. The production work he has done include several breakout albums from major artists of today and from the past including: Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Aerosmith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against The Machine, Bruce Springsteen, The Offspring, Incubus and Soundgarden, among others. With a pedigree like this fused with extremely talented artists, one can almost guarantee the success of Revelations.
