A CONVERSATION WITH THE CHILDREN

*HYMN: “This Little Light of Mine” NCH #524 black (Lyrics continue at top of facing page in hymnal)

OPENING PRAYER (Based on “The Musician’s Prayer”, Anonymous) O God, let our “Jazz Sunday” music be a witness to your majesty and love. May your presence and beauty be found in every note, and may the words that are sung reach the hearts of your people, so that all will draw closer to you. May your Spirit guide us through every measure, so that we might be the instruments of your peace, and proclaim your glory with glad voices. We pray in the name of Jesus, who taught us to pray...

*THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen.

*GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

At this time the children are invited to go to their Sunday School classes

SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 150 NCH #723 black

ANTHEM: “Precious Lord” by Thomas A. Dorsey Jazz Ensemble & Rebecca Shrimpton

Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand. I am tired, I am weak, I am worn. Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light. Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home. When my way grows drear, precious Lord linger near, when my life is almost gone. Hear me cry, hear my call, hold my hand lest I fall: Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home. Precious Lord, I love your name, when I look back from whence I came, sometimes stumblin' sometimes fallin', sometimes alone. Friends and loved ones who are so dear, many gone, but still I’m here: Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home.

PRAYER TEAM “For where 2 or 3 are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them”. Matthew 18:20

Would you like to request prayers? Email [email protected]. We will resume meetings on Thursday 9/21 from 6-7 and then meet the first and third Thursdays of each month. All are welcome to gather in the parlor of First Parish. We will start promptly at 6:00 PM and end at 7:00 PM. We will be praying in one accord, a form of conversational prayer. Bring your concerns to the Lord whether they are for Yourself, Family, Friends, our Country, and the World! You may pray along silently or pray aloud.

SILENT PRAYER/AWARENESS WALK Your Interim Pastor, Transition Team, [and Prayer Team], invite you to join them in a brief walk around the neighborhood on October 8th, 11:30 to 12:15. In case you’ve never been on a walk like this, here’s what it entails: A small group of us silently walking around Manchester for half an hour or so, simply being aware of what . For example: Are there tricycles in the driveways? Trampolines in the yards? Moms/dads with strollers on the sidewalks? Elderly people sitting on porches? Houses with peeling paint? Handicap ramps? Halloween decorations? Shops with creative signs/displays in their windows? etc, etc. At the end of the walk, we gather in the sanctuary and “report back” what we noticed. Then, we pray for the well-being of the people we’ve seen. Note: Prayer walks are not a means of evangelizing our neighbors; prayer walks are a means for God to open our eyes and hearts to the people around us. (Also note: We won’t be conspicuously praying while we are walking, so anyone taking notice of us won’t view us as religious zealots; to the average person, we will simply look like a small group of people out for a Sunday stroll :).

BOOK GROUP We continue with a new selection, “The Storied Life of AJ Fikry” by Gabrielle Zevin. A. J. Fikry’s life is not at all what he expected it to be. He lives alone, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history, and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. But when a mysterious package appears at the bookstore, its unexpected arrival gives Fikry the chance to make his life over--and see everything anew. Next gathering October 30th at 7 PM.

BIBLE STUDY (for adults) Thursdays 4-5:30 PM at 37 Beach St (home of Vin Terrill). Join us for a weekly study of our scriptures led by Rev. Marlayna.

SEASIDE PARISH KNITTERS began again on Thursday, Sept. 21. We would love to have you join us on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month (Oct. 6 & 19) in the Conference Room of the Chapel, 3-5 PM. Read more about us here.

SUNDAY SCHOOL Looking for Sunday Volunteers! Please keep in mind due to school vacations and special holidays usually one month = 2 weeks of actual Sunday school. So the first section of time will be Sept.- November, the second will be Dec.-February, and the third March-May. The hope is to get more of the congregation involved in the Sunday school but also give people a break where they can spend their Sundays in church or just relaxing. With two people in each classroom you will switch off teaching and helping. The second adult is responsible for helping with crowd control, walking children to the bathroom, serving snack, and lending help to the person teaching when needed. You do not have to be a member of the church to teach or trained in Godly play. Check out all the opportunities to help here. Contact Jessica 978-526-7661 ext. 3

MISSION Be aware of all that we do to make a difference and - when you can - help make a difference yourself! Weekly Food Donations When you go to church Sunday mornings remember to take one item that can be donated to Open Door through the food basket placed in the Narthex. It is easy to forget, but you can think ahead and bring one food item that will be much appreciated by folks who really need our help. Open Door Dinner First Parish serves dinner at The Open Door Wednesday, Sept. 20. Prep & Servers needed: sign up here or contact Jim Brennan at 978-879-4595 Brown Bag Lunches for Action, Friday, September 29. Can you help? Needed: Donations of food, volunteers to make the sandwiches and a volunteer to deliver the meals to Gloucester. Please bring donations to the Chapel kitchen before 10 AM on Friday. Action, Inc. is an Emergency Homeless Shelter in Gloucester, their Mission is to improve the lives of disadvantaged individuals and families by minimizing the effects of poverty, promoting economic security, and advocating for social change. Sign up after worship or online.

INTERIM VISION PROCESS You are invited to the first (of four) “Whole Church” Congregational meetings taking place over the next several months (2 in the fall; 2 in the spring.) On October 22nd, after worship in the sanctuary (from 11:20 to 1pm), we will be meeting on the topic of “HISTORY,” and we need your input! The input given in these meetings—combined with prayerful reflection on Scripture and demographic material--will lead to: a Vision for Ministry, Goals for carrying out that Vision, and a Profile to help the church search for a Settled Pastor, whose gifts and skills match the Vision. The purpose for the HISTORY meeting is to share experiences and memories of where we’ve been as a church-- noting highlights, struggles, key events in the community and the world that have shaped the church in some way—in order to better plan where we are going.

A light lunch will be served in lieu of our usual Sunday refreshment time.

[Note: The goal of this meeting is not to rehash old hurts or conflicts, but rather to speak with a view of positively moving forward into the future for the glory of God. Also Note: Each person will be invited to speak only from his/her own personal experience, acknowledging and allowing that others may have experienced the same event(s) differently.]
