Interview with Robert Sedláček (Director)

How would you describe your work? All my professional life I have watched, listened, and been silent or I have said sentences so that I can watch and listen. For me, silence means thinking. Life has allowed me to run down the street with dealers and meet with presidents. I keep watching people. I think about them, what they will endure, what they will not tolerate.

I’m perceptive, sensitive and maybe sometimes hypersensitive and hysterical, but no one here deals with it and I don’t do it in the form of a scream. You can laugh at my work, my creative style, but within ten minutes you will certainly know that it is me.

14 EUROCHANNEL GUIDE NOVEMBER 2020 Internal Affairsdescribes a relatively recent period. How would you describe your new series? It’s a clash between a person who starts work and is so stupid that he believes what the recruitment ad declared. He gradually reveals one phrase after another. The main character is a clown who insists that the rules that were in the recruitment advertisement announcing «Join us to build a better world» apply. But suddenly he sees howthe institution looks. Internal Affairs is a portrait of the time around 2010, when society, twenty years after the revolution, Interview with was completely disillusioned. Do you want to say something specific with the new series? My creation is about reading between the lines. I knock on the door and either I promise, I threaten, or I cheat. One looks beyond one’s value. The feeling of guilt is perfectly normal. Everyone feels it.

Your projects describe the phenomena in society that you observe, generally dealing with corruption. How do you maintain the strength to continue? I know that the director should not plunge people into darkness but should show them the light. My depressive stories have light, they have humor. I admit that it’s not humor for everyone, but it’s more or less a tragicomedy.

How would you describe your experience with the series’ cast? I admit that the main role was played by the producer. Apart from Palach, it was my first encounter with such a young generation - Křenková, Benoni, Mádl. We saw ourselves like animals, they provoked me, but they were a huge surprise to me. Gradually, I started to like them. Jiri Mádl has huge life energy. Štěpán Benoni is the Czech Kevin Spacey, he is a great actor with whom I would like to work again. Eliška Křenková was there as Mádl’s partner according to the script, but she benefited from each scene! She is amazing as an acting partner.
