Pre Feasibility Report Page 1 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 GENERAL River Periyar, the longest of all the rivers in the State of Kerala and also the largest in potential, having a length of 244 km originates in the Sivagiri group of hills at an elevation of about +1830 m above MSL. This river basin is the second largest basin of Kerala State with a drainage area of 5398 Sq Km of which 114 sq km in the Anamalai fold lies in the State of Tamil Nadu. The Periyar Basin lies between 090 15’ N to 100 20’ N and longitude 760 10’ E to 770 30’E. From its origin, Periyar traverses through an immense cliff of rocks in a northerly direction receiving several streamlets in its course. About 48 km downstream, the Mullayar joins the main river at an elevation of +854 m above MSL. Afterwards, the river flows westwards and at about 11 km downstream of the confluence of Mullayar and Periyar, the river passes through a narrow gorge, where the present Mullaperiyar Dam is constructed in 1895. The name Mullaperiyar is derived from a portmanteau of Mullayar and Periyar. Below the Mullaperiyar Dam, the river flows in a winding course taking a north westerly direction. On its travel down, it is enriched by many tributaries like Kattappana Ar, Cheruthoni Ar, Perinjankutty Ar, Muthirapuzha Ar and Idamala Ar. Lower down of Malayatoor; the Pre Feasibility Report Page 2 river takes a meandering course and flows calmly and majestically for about 23 km through Kalady and Chowara and reaches Alwaye.

The BMCs of Kerala has also been declared as Environmental watch groups by the Government of Kerala vide GO No 04/13/Envt dated 13.05.2013. In Kerala after the devastating natural disasters of August 2018 Post Disaster Needs Assessment ( PDNA) has been conducted officially by international organizations. The present report of Rapid Impact Assessment of flood/ landslides on Biodiversity focus on community perspectives of the affect on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. It is for the first time in India that such an assessment of impact of natural disasters on Biodiversity was conducted at LSG level and it is a collaborative effort of BMC and Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB). More importantly each of the 187 BMCs who were involved had also outlined the major causes for such an impact as perceived by them and suggested strategies for biodiversity conservation at local level. Being a study conducted by local community all efforts has been made to incorporate practical approaches for prioritizing areas for biodiversity conservation which can be implemented at local level.

Proposed Terms of Reference for EIA Studies INTRODUCTION River Periyar, the longest of all the rivers in the State of Kerala, and also the largest in potential, having a length of 244 km. This river basin is the second largest basin of Kerala State From its origin, Periyar traverses through an immense cliff of rocks in a northerly direction receiving several streamlets in its course. The name Mullaperiyar is derived from a portmanteau of Mullayar and Periyar. The entire length of the Periyar River flows through the territory of the State of Kerala before it empties into the Arabian Sea. Majority of the hydro power projects of Kerala including the giant Idukki Hydro Electric Project (780 MW) are located in this river basin. The Central Kerala and Metropolitan City of Kochi heavily depend on this river for its irrigation, industrial and drinking water requirements. River Periyar is rightly considered as the life line of Kerala. The Old Mullaperiyar Dam constructed by the British Engineers is the oldest dam in the State of Kerala. The archaic design and primitive construction methods coupled with the natural deterioration due to ageing have rendered the old structure unsafe and has become a constant threat to the lives and properties of thousands of people residing in its downstream.

  • Mullaperiyar Dam Row
Mullaperiyar Dam Row Mullaperiyar Dam Row Mullaperiyar Dam is constructed over the headwaters of the Periyar River in Kerala, India. The Periyar National Park, Thekkady is located around the Periyar reservoir formed by the backwaters of this dam. It is operated by the Government of Tamil Nadu according to a 999-year lease agreement made during erstwhile British colonial rule. The name is derived from a portmanteau of Mullaiyar and Periyar. As the dam is located after the confluence of the Mullayar and Periyar Rivers, the river and hence the dam came to be called Mullaperiyar. Periyar river is a west-flowing river of Kerala State. The river flows its full course entirely through Kerala, and derives its water almost exclusively from catchment area (Drainage basin) inside the State. The dam stops the west flowing river to form a reservoir, which is also exclusively located in Kerala. From the reservoir, Tamil Nadu collects water to the eastern side of Western Ghats via a tunnel. On 29 October 1886 a lease indenture for 999 years was made between Maharaja of Travancore and Secretary of State for India for Periyar irrigation works. The lease provided the British the rights over "all the waters" of the Mullaperiyar and its catchment basin, for an annual rent of Rs. 40,000. The dam's purpose was to divert the waters of the west-flowing Periyar River eastward, taking the water from the reservoir through a tunnel cut across the watershed and Western Ghats to the arid rain shadow regions of Theni, Madurai District, Sivaganga District and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu.

  • Mullaperiyar Dam
Mullaperiyar Dam March 18, 2021 In News: SC orders Mullaperiyar Dam Supervisory Committee to issue directions on issues concerning the dam’s safety. About Mullaperiyar Dam Dam is a masonry gravity dam on the Periyar River in the Indian state of Kerala It is located 881 m (2,890 ft) above mean sea level, on the Cardamom Hills of the Western Ghats in Thekkady, Idukki District of Kerala. It has a height of 53.6 m (176 ft) from the foundation, and a length of 365.7 m (1,200 ft) It was constructed between 1887 and 1895 by John Pennycuick and also reached an agreement to divert water eastwards to the Madras Presidency area (present-day Tamil Nadu). The Periyar National Park in Thekkady is located around the dam’s reservoir. The dam is built at the confluence of Mullayar and Periyar rivers. The dam is located in Kerala on the river Periyar, but is operated and maintained by the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. Although the Periyar River has a total catchment area of 5398 km2 with 114 km2 downstream from the dam in Tamil Nadu, the catchment area of the Mullaperiyar Dam itself lies entirely in Kerala and thus not an inter-State river. What is the issue ? Lease agreement was renewed in the 1970s by both Tamil Nadu and Kerala Giving the former rights to the land and water from the dam by Kerala Authority to develop hydropower projects at the site. Kerala would receive rent from Tamil Nadu. The first cracks in this agreement surfaced in 1979 when a minor earthquake had resulted in cracks in the dam.

CENSUS OF INDIA 1971 SERIES--9 KERALA PART IX-A ADMINISTRATIVE ATLAS K. NARAYANAN OF THE INDIAN ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICE DIRECTOR OF CENSUS OPERATIONS KERALA 1976 3/19-i FOREWORD In order to ensure complete coverage at a population count, the Census Organization obtains or prepares up-to-date detailed maps of all administrative units in the country on the eve of a census. Though in several parts of the country maps of the districts, taluks etc., are available with the State Revenue or Survey authorities, often times, they required to be brought up-to-date and they also varied greatly in scale. One also found it difficult to secure a complete or compact set of all these maps from State authorities. The Census Organization took upon itself the task of updating of the administrative maps and the standadization of scales essentially to meet its own requirements of coverage at the census and analysis of data. Standardization of symbol was also attempted to depict certain features such as the Statejdistrictjtaluk boundades, administrative headquarters, national and state highways and other roads, markets and mandis, post and telegraph offices, travellers' bungalows, hospitals, etc. In each of the District Census Handbooks (there are 356 districts in the country) the district map as wdl as the taluk maps will be printed. While these administrative maps, prepared with great amount of care and effort, served the purposes of the census extremely well, the 1971 Census Organization felt that these would be invaluable for many an administrative purpose and for planning and also to the scholars who might like t~! utilize these maps for various studies.
