In addition, they host the Caltech Jazz Festival, which will this year celebrate it’s eleventh Jane Chang Chen, Mr. Douglas Priest, Dr. Simon Ramo, Mr. Raymond Richards anniversary on April 16th. Members of the Caltech Jazz Bands, who have auditioned and won a BENEFACTORS ($500 to $999) Mr. and Mrs. David E. We are recording this interview at the faculty center at UCLA where Kenny has been teaching for well over three decades. So, good afternoon Mr. Burrell. Burrell: Good afternoon Anthony, my pleasure to be with you, and as I said earlier I’m glad to be able to be interviewed by you. Brown: Well, the feeling is mutual and again this oral history is so that we can capture your life and music in your words, this will be your story told by you. As in every story we have a beginning and we know that you came from Detroit and you came from Detroit at a time when so many of the great jazz innovators and influential artists were thriving in New York, I should say living and thriving in New York, and that list is extensive and we’ll, of course, cover all of your early associates and colleagues. But one question that I had from Barry Kernfeld, who is the editor of the New Grove Jazz Dictionary, he says, “Get Kenny to tell us what was in the water in Detroit at that time [laughs] because how could all of those great musicians come out of there.” So that would be… Burrell: Okay, that’s a good way to start.

The three-concert series begins on July 14 with The Mambo King: A Tito Puente Salute that will include mambo to bossa nova to cha-cha-chá. On August 18, Bayside Summer Nights welcomes The Future of Jazz featuring Cécile McLorin Salvant. Salvant was the winner of the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition whose performances inspired accolades from Wynton Marsalis and The New York Times comparing her to Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald.
