Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 34:1-10, 22 Benedicam Dominum (said responsively by priest and congregation)

I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall ever be in my mouth.

I will glory in the LORD; let the humble hear and rejoice.

8:00 - Page 5 Proclaim with me the greatness of the LORD; let us exalt his Name together.

I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me out of all my terror.

Look upon him and be radiant, and let not your faces be ashamed.

I called in my affliction and the LORD heard me and saved me from all my troubles.

The angel of the LORD encompasses those who fear him, and he will deliver them.

Taste and see that the LORD is good; happy are they who trust in him!

Fear the LORD, you that are his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing.

The young lions lack and suffer hunger, but those who seek the LORD lack nothing that is good.

The LORD ransoms the life of his servants, and none will be punished who trust in him.

The Homily

A period of silent reflection is kept. Please stand.

The Nicene Creed 358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People Please see page 3 for the names of those we are praying for today. The Prayers of the People conclude with the following prayer, said together by the Celebrant and the congregation:

All: Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the election of officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Page 6 - 8:00 Confession of Sin and Absolution 360

Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Peace 360

Celebrant: The Peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you.

On this All Saints Day we celebrate all those who have gone before us in the faith, our dearest and our best. Added to this, as a nation we face an important day with the election on Tuesday. In both cases we are grateful to be part of something bigger than ourselves. I love this definition of tradition: it is democracy of the dead. Our world is so much more than me and my desires, my perspectives, and biases. Given the limit to each of our singular world views, we are grateful for the gift of the other. True enough, some- times we are not very good at showing this, but as a church and as a nation it is the gift of com- munity that has brought us to all that we know and love today and we do well not to forget it. Every year at this time I like to share the following description of All Saints. I came across it early on in my ministry. While it is written about All Saints it could just as easily be rewritten with the subject being nationhood and the players aptly chosen out of America’s history. It doesn’t hurt that the imagery of this story borrows from our other religion, football! I am grateful for you and for your part in the life of this community. Michael+ All Saints

If you have been to a college football game, you may have noticed that there is as much going on in the stands as there is on the field. The players are falling in the mud, fumbling the ball, or mak- ing a long touchdown run. The people in the stands are often standing and shouting and yelling. Old champions who used to play for the school come back to see the games.

You may never have thought of going to church as being like a team huddle in the midst of a football game, but it is. All of us who worship together are on the same team, even though the field we play on is so big we don’t see each other very often. We run our plays in the home, at the office, in the school…and we try to score. Going to church is like time-out to organize ourselves for the next play. We go into the huddle around the altar. Now the only teammates present are not just those we can see. We believe in the “Communion of Saints” which reminds us that there is a whole grandstand full of grads cheering us on.

Peter is there cheering on the cowards. David and Moses are there cheering on the politi- cians. Francis is there urging us to find God in simple things. Cranmer, Latimer, and Ridley are there, telling us not to be afraid to take a stand. And there are lots more in the stands yelling for us: your Uncle George, your grandmother, your friends you went to school with, a son, a daugh- ter. All of these people are telling us they are sure we will make it, that they are with us, that they are counting on us. “Pick yourself up and try again,” they say. “You’ll make it, you’ll make it.” Do you hear them? They are cheering for you.

And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, Steals on the ear the distant triumph song, And hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia!

11:00 - Page 15 The Prayers of the People Please see page 3 for the names of those we are praying for today.

Amen.

Confession of Sin and Absolution 360

Offertory Anthem Give us the wings of faith Ernest Bullock (1890-1979)

Give us the wings of faith to rise We ask them whence their victory came; Within the veil, and see They, with one united breath,

The Saints above, how great their joys, Ascribe the conquest to the Lamb, How bright their glories be. Their triumph to his death

They marked the footsteps that he trod,

His zeal inspired their breast; And, following their incarnate God, They reached the promised rest.

Presentation Hymn Doxology with Alleluias Lasst uns erfreuen

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below, alleluia, alleluia! Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!

The Great Thanksgiving (Eucharistic Prayer B) Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Page 16 - 11:00 Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

For in the multitude of your saints, you have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses, that we might rejoice in their fellowship, and run with endurance the race that is set before us; and, together with them, receive the crown of glory that never fades away.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus and Benedictus Mass of St. Thomas David Thorne

The people stand or kneel.

The Celebrant continues We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

The Celebrant continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

11:00 - Page 17 We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the Blessed Virgin Mary and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Celebrant and People Our Father, who art in heaven, as we forgive those hallowed be thy Name, who trespass against us. thy kingdom come, And lead us not into temptation, thy will be done, but deliver us from evil. on earth as it is in heaven. For thine is the kingdom, Give us this day our daily bread. and the power, and the glory, And forgive us our trespasses, for ever and ever. Amen.

Dean Wright’s Book of Hymns Now Available, Book Signing to Follow on November 22

Our own Dean Wright’s book, “Sung Stories: Hymns for the Life of the Church,” is now available. You can get your copy today from Gifts of Grace or Amazon. If you make a purchase through Gifts of Grace, a portion of the sale will go directly to the Cathedral. To contact the Gifts of Grace book store with any questions, email [email protected]. The link to purchase it through Amazon can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1952248094/ref=cm_sw_r_em_api_i_oaDMFb59KV1G7 Dean Wright will be signing copies of his book from 3:00-3:45 p.m. on Sunday, November 22, prior to that day’s Evensong. Books will be available for sale that af- ternoon if you haven’t already purchased a copy. The book is described as such on Amazon.com: "From his youth, when his father woke him on Sunday morn- ings with the bold proclamation, “Rise up, O men of God!” to his naming as Dean of Grace Church Cathe- dral in Charleston, S.C., Michael Wright has honored the role of hymns in the expression of faith and our com- munal spirit. In this volume, he presents lyrics for over 60 new hymns—some set to well-known melodies and some to new musical scores—that span the breadth of the liturgical year and speak to the special occasions in the life of the church."

These are both very meaningful to me. Thank you, and thank each one of you for making Grace Church Cathedral such a special community. The Dean’s Thursday morning hour-long class be- ginning at 10:30 focuses on the scripture lessons for the Sunday following with emphasis on the Gospel lesson. We start with those scripture readings and discuss their meanings and origin and their message for us today. We talk about our Anglican tradition as it relates to significance and meaning of upcom- ing church seasons and saints’ days. Our discus- sions are open and inclusive and lead to many inter- esting topics sometimes far from where we started. The dean even occasionally includes a bit of our wisdom in his Sunday sermon.

To Be a Saint

To be a saint is to be human because we were created to be human. To be a saint is to live with courage and self-restraint, but it is more than that. To be a saint is to live not with the hands clenched to grasp, to strike, to hold tight to a life that is always slipping away the more tightly we hold it; but it is to live with the hands stretched out both to give and to receive with gladness. To be a saint is to work and weep for the broken and suffering of the world, but it is also to be strangely light of heart in the knowledge that there is something greater than the world that mends and renews.

Maybe more than anything else, to be a saint is to know joy. Not happiness that comes and goes with the mo- ments that occasion it, but joy that is always there like an underground spring no matter how dark and terrible the night. To be a saint is to be a little out of one’s mind, which is a very good thing to be a little out of from time to time. It is to live a life that is always giving itself away and yet is always full.

...This, I think, it is possible to know: that however inanely and blindly we are seeking the kingdom of Heav- en, it is also seeking us. Because if it is our secret purpose to become saints, it is God’s unsecret purpose to make us saints. It is the nature of reality itself to enlighten and set free the whole creation down to the last blade of grass. In Christian language, it is the ultimate purpose of God to make us all “to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”
