ORGANISATION EUROPÉENNE POUR LA RECHERCHE NUCLÉAIRE EUROPEAN ORGANIZATION FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH W r EXPERIMENTS AT CERN IN 1986 GENEVA NOVEMBER 1986 INTRODUCTION This book is a compilation of the current experimental programme at CERN. The experiments listed are being performed at one of the following machines: the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), the Proton Synchrotron (PS) and the Synchro-Cyclotron (SC). The four experiments planned for the Large Electron Positron machine (LEP) are also listed. The programme has been determined by the CERN Research- Board, which advises the Director-General on experiments to be carried out at CERN. The Research Board acts on recommendations made by the Experiments Committees which are the SPSC, the PSCC and the LEPC. The composition of the Exper- iments Committees and of the Research Board as of 1st November, 1986 is given in tables 1-4. The schematic layouts of beams and experiments at the different machines appear in the beginning of the report. Each experiment is identified by a code which consists of a serial number and some characters denoting the machine and the area. In addition, a short mnemonic description of its physics purposes has been added in the hope of facilitating its identification. Each experiment is briefly described and a schematic layout of its appar- atus is included, together with lists of participants and institutions. The status of the experiments (preparation/data-taking/completed) corresponds to the situation as of 1st November, 1986. "Completed" means that data- taking is finished, not necessarily the analysis of the results; this status is kept for two years and then the experiment is removed from the catalogue. A complete list of all experiments published in this book since 1975 is given at the end of the catalogue. Notice that the above inform- ation is provided by the experimental teams, is updated by them once a year and is given under their responsibility. It should be stressed that this catalogue is not an official CERN document; the Minutes of the Research Board and of the Experiments Committees are the appropriate official documents. Full credit for collecting, editing and typing the material goes to Liliane Braize; she may be contacted for further information or for comments and corrections. Programming help has been provided by Mr. Sergio Santiago and Mr. Jean-Philippe Baud. Notice that the cover of this year's Grey Book is green. Besides being in a more cheerful color, it has the additional benefit of being cheaper than the earlier version.
