Cornell University 2020 Fire blight, caused by the bacterial pathogen Erwinia amylovora, is a devastating disease of pome fruit with worldwide distribution. The disease gets its name from the scorched appearance of diseased tissue and infects all tissue types of pomaceous fruit. Tissue in the early stages of infection exude a bacterial ooze containing the bacteria in a polysaccharide matrix, which acts as primary and secondary inoculum. Insects have been implicated in the transmission of E. amylovora since the pathogen was first discovered, with various mechanisms for insect mediated transmission proposed. The goal of this research was to further define the role of insects in transmission of E. amylovora by identifying its most important potential vectors in New York State and advancing our knowledge of the ecology of transmission by insects. In chapter 1, we describe field surveys used to identify key insect vectors over the course of a growing season, showing that while pollinating hymenopterans historically received attention as springtime disease disseminators, dipterans have an understudied and potentially outsized role in transmission throughout the entire season. Various families of Diptera were observed feeding on bacterial ooze and could shed bacteria for at least six days following an acquisition event from ooze.

Infected sweet and sour cherries, especially on maz- zard rootstock, can be sources of X-disease, although chokecherry is often the principal reservoir. Other reservoirs of X-disease include weeds such as clover and dandelion. Pedicle swells at its tip into a small pad (receptacle). - Other parts of the flower are attached to the receptacle. Structure of Flowers • Outermost whorl of parts that typically grows from the receptacle is of three to five sepals. All together, the whorl or sepals is called the calyx. • Next whorl consists of three to many petals. All of the petals together are called the corolla. The reason you see so many different types of flowers are because of the ways plants modify their corollas to attract different pollinators. Calyx and corolla together form the perianth. Structure of Flowers • After the petals, flowers have a whorl of male parts called stamens. Little bags of pollen at the tips of the stamens are called anthers. Anthers contain sporangia. The spores produced there develop into pollen grains containing sperm cells. The slender stalks that support the anthers are called filaments. Structure of Flowers • The most central whorl of parts within a flower consists of female carpels– green, vase-like structures. In many flowers, more than one carpel fuses together to form a compound carpel, also called a pistil. Structure of Flowers • Each carpel or pistil has three parts: The tip of the pistil is the stigma. Pollination occurs when pollen grains land on the stigma.

    9.9.7 Corn Wet Milling 9.9.7.1 General1 Establishments in corn wet milling are engaged primarily in producing starch, syrup, oil, sugar, and byproducts such as gluten feed and meal, from wet milling of corn and sorghum. These facilities may also produce starch from other vegetables and grains, such as potatoes and wheat. In 1994, 27 corn wet milling facilities were reported to be operating in the United States. 9.9.7.2 Process Description1-4 The corn wet milling industry has grown in its 150 years of existence into the most diversified and integrated of the grain processing industries. The corn refining industry produces hundreds of products and byproducts, such as high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), corn syrup, starches, animal feed, oil, and alcohol. In the corn wet milling process, the corn kernel (see Figure 9.9.7-1) is separated into 3 principal parts: (1) the outer skin, called the bran or hull; (2) the germ, containing most of the oil; and (3) the endosperm (gluten and starch). From an average bushel of corn weighing 25 kilograms (kg) (56 pounds [lb]), approximately 14 kg (32 lb) of starch is produced, about 6.6 kg (14.5 lb) of feed and feed products, about 0.9 kg (2 lb) of oil, and the remainder is water. The overall corn wet milling process consists of numerous steps or stages, as shown schematically in Figure 9.9.7-2. Shelled corn is delivered to the wet milling plant primarily by rail and truck and is unloaded into a receiving pit.

Watson2 INTRODUCTION Yoshino Cherry grows quickly to 20 feet, has beautiful bark marked with prominent lenticels but is a relatively short-lived tree (Fig. 1). It has upright to horizontal branching, making it ideal for planting along walks and over patios. The white to pink flowers which occur in early spring before the leaves develop are sometimes damaged by late frosts or very windy conditions. Haggag Department of Plant Pathology, National Research Center, Dokki, Cairo, Egypt. ABSTRACT There are many diseases of corn caused by fungi, viruses, bacteria and nematodes. Diseases of corn cause yearly losses from two to seven percent, but in some localized areas, oneor more diseases may become acute and destroy a larger percentage of the crop. Key word: Introduction Corn is the second most important crop (750,000 feddans) in Egypt. Egypt produces about 5.9 million tons of corn annually, and is expect to import about 4.5 million tons in 2006. Its main use is in cooking, where its high smoke point makes refined corn oil a valuable frying oil. Different types of products can be created from corn, such as corn flour, cornflake, corn syrup, popcorn, rice corn and corn soap. Even corn whiskey. Corn syrup, which is one of several natural sweeteners derived from corn starch, is used in a wide variety of food products. It is rich in linoleic acid, one of the three essential fatty acids. Corn has many uses throughout the food chain as feed for animals and as an ingredient on its own. However , manycorn fields in Egypt develop disease problems every year that affect yield and quality of the grain crop.
