High waters given in Admiralty Tide Tables (ATT Vol 1) for 2018 represent a single turning point for the highest tide over a particular high water." 3 SOUTHAMPTON WATER SAILING ASSOCATION OFFICERS PRESIDENT: Alex Bell 6 Heathcote Place (Warsash S.C.) It does not have individuals as members, but is managed by a Council that is composed of representatives of each member club. Any club or association in this area, with an interest in sailing is eligible for membership. The association was formed in November 1953, following a challenge to a team-rowing race between Eling Sailing Club and Millbrook Sailing Club, and originally comprised of Esso S.C., Millbrook S.C., Royal Engineers S.C., Eling S.C. and Weston S.C.. From this inaugural meeting grew the objectives of the Association. Objectives (a) To promote the sport of sailing generally on Southampton Water. (b) To protect the interests of member clubs. (c) To promote racing between member clubs. The Association is active in pursuing the above objectives. Inter club racing events are run on its behalf by member clubs each season. Representing members’ interests Of perhaps more importance in recent years has been the Association’s efforts to protect members’ interests, amidst ever growing legislation from Government, Local Authorities and the EU, with environmental matters now seemingly paramount in determining legislation. To this end, SWSA has become a body to be reckoned with, and is fully represented on the following bodies: RYA South Region, Southampton Port Marine Users Group, Solent Area Safety Advisory Committee, and is a member of the RYA, Solent Cruising & Racing Association, and the Solent Protection Society. Relationships Over the years a good relationship has been established with the harbour authorities, Southampton VTS, Queens Harbour Master Portsmouth, Southampton City Council, Hampshire County Council and New Forest District Council frequently consult us on planning applications and coastal strategy plans. Marine Management Organisation (MMO) consults us under the terms of The Coastal Protection Act on plans affecting navigation in the area. Close contacts are kept with the Police, Coastguards and other local rescue organisations, also with organisations with interests similar to our own, in adjacent waters. The Association enjoys a good working relationship with Associated British Ports (ABP) which controls the Port of Southampton. To find out more Visit the SWSA website at www.swsa.org.uk. WHO ARE THE RACES FOR? SWSA Cruiser racing is particularly designed for: - Those new to racing. Cruisers and cruiser-racers. Short-handed yachts. Racing at a low cost. Racing that is good fun. Moving from dinghies to cruisers. WHY RACE SWSA? Improve your sailing skills Challenging day’s sailing Practise navigational skills, Meet people from other clubs. Gives you an excuse to go sailing Enables you to gain competence for RYA qualifications HANDICAPPING The fleet is organised into two classes, handicaps are based on the Byron Handicap System. Class split dependent on entries received. Boats not possessing a Byron Handicap will be given an arbitrary handicap, until a Byron Handicap is issued. Byron handicaps are obtainable via www.byronsoftware.org.uk/bycn/handcalc.htm HOW DO I JOIN IN THE FUN? Contact your SWSA Club representative, download an entry form from www.swsa.org.uk, phone Nigel Edwards on 07971 795221 or Email: [email protected] 6 STRUCTURE OF THE CRUISER RACING 1. The Passage Races These races give the opportunity for longer passages in company, with a friendly competitive atmosphere, but with the emphasis on safety. On the Cowes and Yarmouth races there is the opportunity to socialise with other boats’ crews, with an overnight rally in Yarmouth. On the longer passages, for example, the Round the Island Race, some crews keep in regular radio contact with other boats giving them the opportunity to practise and gain confidence with their VHF radio communications procedure. 2. The Whale Evening Series The evening series began in 2008 and has grown in popularity such that in 2011 we had a total entry of 25 boats from 7 clubs and up to 18 boats racing on any particular day. Since 2012 the series has been supported by Whale Pumps. One of our primary objectives has been to facilitate entry to as many boats as possible and noting that many of our members are on tide restricted moorings the races are always scheduled to coincide with the high water stand. This policy also gives a sufficient expanse of deep water so that none of our standard courses need to cross the main shipping channel and potential interaction with commercial shipping is therefore minimised. We are proud to say that in the 10 seasons that the series has run, we have experienced no close quarter incidents with commercial shipping and received no complaints from ABP or other water users. Racing at high water also ensures that our courses are largely devoid of current which can be a source of frustration during the light airs often experienced on summer evenings. We also take pride that the SWSA protest committee has never sat for the evening series; testament to the friendliness, good seamanship and sportsmanship of our competitors. Our start line is always set-up adjacent to the buoy Hovercraft 2, just off Netley foreshore, a location roughly equidistant between the extreme ends of Southampton Water. 3. Weekend Series (The Bert Drought Series) The SWSA has traditionally run a series of “round-the-cans” races at the weekend. This series comprising four races held each month starting in May. The races will be held on the Hythe side of Southampton Water so as to avoid clashing with dinghy racing from Southampton, Western Shore, Netley Cliff and Netley Sailing Clubs. A pre-planned set of courses all starting south of Hythe Sailing club at Bird Pile are used with the number displayed from the committee boat. A letter R indicates that the course will be sailed in reverse direction. 4. Single Hander Set on the weekend courses and run as two classes but with no spinnakers or asymmetric sails. A popular challenge that requires careful planning by the skipper, with no excuses for not being unable to find a crew! 5. The Sailing Instructions (SI’s) Our sailing instructions and courses are kept as simple as possible with pre-set courses published on the SWSA website as a set of chartlets. The committee boat simply displays a course board corresponding to the selected course. Instructions are given to all participants giving details of: dates of races, start times and procedures, courses, safety and insurance requirements etc., and are available on the SWSA website. (www.swsa.org.uk) 6. Handicapping As with all SWSA cruiser racing the basis for our handicapping is the Byron Handicap System. Thus there are only minimum costs associated with formal measurement and certification. Entry fees are maintained at a low rate commensurate with the SWSA. For new entrants there are no race fees for the first years racing. 7 SWSA DINGHY RACING CHAMPIONSHIP History SWSA dinghy racing has been taking place on Southampton Water from at least 1954 when the members of the Esso Sailing Club (now Ashlett S. C.) presented the SWSA with the Challenge Trophy for dinghy racing. Traditionally, SWSA dinghy races have been inclusive events, bringing together sailors of all abilities, from the novice to the world champion.
