Eating Out by John Withers, yachtie and foodie All of you that have been to Yarmouth before will be well acquainted with its pubs, cafes and restaurants. For those that are new to the town you have the delightful experience of exploring and trying out the various options available. The food in, and around, Yarmouth is generally exceptional, the quality of the fine ales and the welcome from landlords, landladies and staff is second to none. For the serious walker, or cyclist, various options exist in the wonderful West Wight countryside. See articles and maps a few pages on. Or take a more leisurely stroll along the shoreline to Fort Victoria, you’ll pass several refreshment stops en route. A longer walk, but still in most peoples minds one Off The Rails of the best, is alongside the banks of the Western If it’s a restaurant you’d prefer then my advice is to Yar estuary - one of my favourite walks. Favourite book before you travel. because there’s a path on either side of the river and Whatever you do at Yarmouth, and wherever you at Old Freshwater you’ll find The Red Lion, this eat out, you’ll be assured of a memorable time. You traditional country pub is under fairly new ownership can dance on the tables or sit in front of a log fire: and is well worth a visit, you won’t regret it! Whatever suits your fancy. SEE OVERLEAF>>> The more adventurous walker can continue on to Freshwater Bay (see Cycling map on page 55), or try the coastal path to Alum Bay, then on to The Needles. From there you can climb to the top of Tennyson Down and down into Freshwater Bay. The spectacular views from the Down are well worth the climb and my – won’t you deserve that pint at Freshwater Bay. From the Bay cut back across to Yarmouth alongside the Western Yar. When you’re adjacent to the Mill take a detour to Yarmouth Station, here you’ll find a nice surprise and what really should be done with a disused station. Back in town you’re spoilt for choice, but on busy weekend evenings get in early, Yarmouth gets busy.

Estuary Wildlife The Western Yar Estuary is a great place for wildlife. Its tidal waters, saltmarsh and mudflats are home to a wide range of plants and animals that are specially adapted to living in the challenging conditions. The estuary’s birds have different adaptations too with a beak length that helps them feed in a certain way. This means that many different birds can feed, nest and shelter in the habitats provided by the estuary. The Western Yar is so important to wildlife that it is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and it is part of the network of Marine Protected Areas that include important sites on both sides of the Solent.

Circular Walk A wander around the Western Yar is a great way to enjoy the beautiful scenery, pick up a free leaflet from the Harbour Office to guide you. Bouldnor Forest, Mill Copse and Fort Victoria are also close by and are ideal for a pleasant stroll through beautiful woodland.

The visiting birds that feed here are building up vital energy supplies for their onward migration and every time we startle them into flight they lose essential reserves and their chances of survival diminish. Please help to protect our wildlife by staying on the footpaths and keeping dogs under control and off the saltmarsh.

Estuaries Project Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners is a partner in the Isle of Wight Estuaries Project which promotes the sustainable management of the Island’s estuaries. Activities include projects to help conserve and enhance the area and to raise awareness of estuaries, their valuable habitats and wide range of uses.

Newtown Old Town Hall P Wandering through the meadows and paths that give women the right to vote, the Trust on the Isle lead through the woods and fields down to of Wight are celebrating their own remarkable Newtown Harbour, is a quiet and tranquil way to women. Known as Ferguson’s Gang, they raised spend a relaxing afternoon. But hidden in the huge sums of money to protect heritage and landscape are clues to Newtown’s surprisingly busy past.

Once the principle town of the Island, the medieval street design and burgage plots of people’s homes are fossilised under walker’s feet in the layout of the roads and footpaths. Ancient names such as Gold Street and Silver Street give hints of the activities that once filled the area. But this all came to an end when the town became a casualty of first plague and then raiding in 1377. What was once a bustling town gradually became a sleepy hamlet.

The Old Town Hall, standing proudly amongst grassy fields and hedgerows, is the last surviving vestige of the ‘rotten borough’ that Newtown turned into. But this important and historic building may have been lost for eternity if it hadn’t been for the courageous efforts of a group of five remarkable and quirky women. In 1933 they saved the Old Town Hall for the nation by giving it to the National Trust.

But perhaps what the publicity generated from their bizarre exploits is most surprising is the way they went about it. as their main weapon in the fight against the destruction of the past. During their fundraising, the Having already been successful in rescuing Gang’s ‘swag’ donations to the National Trust were Shalford Mill in Surrey, they turned their attentions delivered in eccentric ways, such as a one-hundred to Newtown. Using pseudonyms such as Red pound note stuffed inside a cigar, and money Biddy, Sister Agatha and Bill Stickers, they wore inside a fake pineapple, that would unwittingly masks as they went about their daring deeds, using cause a bomb scare. A masked man claiming to be Ferguson himself even made a radio appeal, which raised almost £1000 and led to 600 people joining the Trust as members.

Although their activities declined after the Second World War, in 1989 Sister Agatha visited Newtown Old Town Hall. She explained that they had been young and wanted to help the National Trust, and that above all, it had been fun. To mark this special year, and to celebrate the work of these incredible women, the gift that she left behind almost 30 years ago, forms the centrepiece of a new display about Ferguson’s Gang in the Old Town Hall she helped to save. And each Sunday from 27 May until 1 July (1&3pm) you can join a tour of the Old Town Hall to discover more about the Gang and their work here. And just as in 1933, it is only through support from members and visitors that the National Trust can continue the important legacy of looking after these Picture © National Trust/John Faulkner special places for ever, for everyone.
