Adirondack Mountains — A major mountain range in the northeastern part of New York State. The range boasts 46 peaks. The highest of these is Mount Marcy. It is 5,344 feet high, making it the highest point in New York State. The Adirondack Mountains grew from great upward rock shifts that took place long ago.

Today, most of these mountains are part of Adirondack Park. This park covers about 12,000 square miles. Adirondack Park is known for its many beautiful bodies of water. It has 2,300 lakes. There are also stunning gorges with streams and waterfalls. Many well-known rivers, such as the Hudson, begin there.

The beauty of the Adirondack waters and mountains has drawn many tourists to this area. In the 1800s, many large log homes known as “great camps” were built there. 1 The bus bumps along the dusty road, high up in the Andes Mountains of . You have been traveling for hours and can barely keep your eyes open. The snowcapped mountain peaks are a blur of white as they zoom past your window. You must be getting close to your destination —Huascarán National Park.

2 Finally the bus stops. You look out the window. What is that strange object? Are you dreaming? It looks like some kind of cactus. Then you see there are lots of them. You can’t wait to get out of the bus and take a closer look. You’re fully awake now. You try to be patient as the people in front of you make their way down the steps.

3 Finally you are out! You rush over and stand at the base of one of them. You look up.

Banana Pudding

Here is a great dessert that you can make for your family! It takes only a few minutes to make, and there is no need to cook.You do need to plan ahead, because the pudding must have time to chill in the refrigerator. Makes 8 servings

You will need:

2 boxes instant vanilla pudding (4-serving size)

3 cups milk

44–48 vanilla cookies

6 bananas, sliced to about 1/2 inch thick

2 cups whipped topping

Colored sprinkles, chocolate chips, or chopped nuts (if you wish)

Here is what to do:

1. Make the vanilla pudding using the 3 cups of milk. Follow the directions on the pudding

box.

2. Spoon 1/2 cup of pudding into the bottom of a 1½ quart clear glass bowl. Place a layer of

5. Add another layer of cookies, then a layer of sliced bananas, and then 2/3 cup of pudding.
