The month of June is famous for “June Gloom.” May and June together are usually the cloudiest months in coastal Southern California. It’s ironic that in this month we celebrate the holiday of Shavuot where it’s customary to Sharon and Rose decorate one’s house with beautiful flowers. While we have fresh flowers each week at Garden of Palms we look forward to taking our decorations to the next level for Shavuot and bringing you fantastic programming as well! The month of June also includes Father’s Day! You know I love a good joke, so here’s one for Father’s Day: “I gave my father $100 and said, “Buy yourself something that will make your life easier.” So he went out and bought a present for my mother.” On behalf of all our staff, we want to wish all the fathers at Garden of Palms the Happiest Father’s Day! Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage.

During this time, songs like "Dancing in the Street" and "What's Going On?" targeted social issues in America and created a voice for African-American people through their messages. Events like the Mississippi Freedom Summer and Bloody Thursday inspired the artists at Motown to create these songs. Influenced by the cultural and social circumstances of the Civil Rights Movement, the musical output of Motown Records between 1959 and 1972 evolved from a sole focus on entertainment in popular culture to a focus on motivating social change through music.

  • Dancing in the Street”--Martha and the Vandellas (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2005 Essay by Cary O’Dell
“Dancing in the Street”--Martha and the Vandellas (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2005 Essay by Cary O’Dell Martha and the Vandellas Erudite music critic Dave Marsh has called it, “As pure a product of its day as anything Dylan or the Beatles ever imagined.” The song is “Dancing in the Street,” written by William Stevenson, Marvin Gaye, and Ivy Jo Hunter and recorded by Martha and the Vandellas in 1964. Since its release in July of ’64 (it would reach #2 on the Billboard pop chart by September), the song has gone on to become one of Gordy/Motown and pop music’s most definitive works and a powerful anthem, sometimes in spite of itself. The Martha of Martha and the Vandellas is Martha Reeves. She was born in Alabama in 1941 and raised in Detroit. She began singing with her friends Annette Beard and Rosalind Ashford, as the Del-Phi’s, while still in high school. They cut their first records in 1960. But stardom was not, at that time, in the cards. Not long after, however, and after Reeves briefly pursed a solo career, Reeves became the secretary to Mickey Stevenson, an exec at Detroit’s renowned Motown Records. Legend has it that, one day, label founder Berry Gordy, Jr. needed some backup singers for a session then in progress. Knowing of Reeves’ recording ambitions, he called her and her friends, Beard and Ashford, into the studio. The trio of ladies would end up singing back-up on two Marvin Gaye records, “Stubborn Kind of Fellow” and “Hitch Hike.” Under the moniker Martha and the Vandellas (a hybrid of Detroit’s Van Dyke Street and singer Della Reese’s first name), the revived group also quickly recorded their own single, “I’ll Have to Let Him Go.” Liking the end results, Gordy signed the group to their own contract in September 1962.

archived as http://www.stealthskater.com/Documents/Motown_01.doc (also …Motown_01.pdf) => doc pdf URL-doc URL-pdf the history of the Record Label Motown AARP magazine / December 2018-January 2019 By Touré In the beginning, there was Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown records. A writer and producer of popular music that he hoped would one day reach all of young America. He was a man known for his impeccable ear and relentless drive. So it's not surprising that the second act that Gordy signed to his label was teenage composer William "Smokey" Robinson and his singing group the Miracles. - 1 - Like Gordy, Robinson was a prolific creator. He's now credited with over 4,000 songs and dozens of top-40 hits including "My Girl" for the Temptations, "My Guy" for Mary Wells, and "Ain't That Peculiar" for Marvin Gaye. But Robinson went on to sing many of the timeless hits which he created (for example, "The Tracks of My Tears", "I Second That Emotion", and "The Tears of a Clown"). He also became a Motown vice-president, producer, and talent scout. The image of Motown to this day is tied up with image of Smokey Robinson. Both are associated with class and taste and the ability to cross over to white audiences without ever losing the love and admiration of black fans. Robinson earned his place in the Rock&Roll Hall-of-Fame and the Songwriters Hall-of-Fame and has been honored by the Kennedy center. 2 years ago he received the Library of Congress' Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
