Bible Study Outline

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST SUB-THEME: The Supremacy of Jesus Christ over Biblical heroes (7) TOPIC: Jesus and the Prophets TEXT: Genesis 49:10; John 1:45; Hebrews 1: 1- 13

AIMS: i. to bring out various prophetic pointers to Jesus Christ as the Messiah and eternal righteous King and ii. to show the supremacy of Jesus over the prophets

INTRODUCTION: The ministry of the prophets and that of Jesus seem so similar because thay has a link with God. The prophets were the mouth piece of God in the Old Testament; though every message sent through them pointed to the coming of the Messiah. This study shows further on the progressive revelation of God’s word from the Old Testament to the New about the supremacy of Jesus to the Old Testament prophets.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS: 1. What were the prophets saying about Jesus Christ from the following Bible passages and how did they manifest? a. Isa 7:14; 9:6; Matt 1:23; Rev 3:7 b. Gen 48:10; Psalm 45:6-8; Luke 1:30-33; Heb 1:8 c. Ps 68:18; Acts 1:9; Rev 19:19-20 d. Isa 9:2; 60:3; Luke 2:29-32; John 8:12; Rev 21:23-24. e. Jer. 23:5; Micah 5:2; Matt 2:4-6; Rev 17:14; 19:16. 2. From the above, how can you confirm Jesus Christ as superior to the Prophets? Rev 5:1; 20:13-15.

CONCLUSION: While the Old Testament prophecies revealed the Messiah, Son of God as appointed by the Father to be our king and Lord, by whom also he made all things; the New Testament fulfilled the prophecies and the Apocalypse (Revelation) revealed the final judgment and eternal kingship by the Son of God as revealed by the prophets.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Prophesies have pointed at Jesus Christ as the Messiah and eternal, righteous King.

MEMORY VERSE: John 1:45 “Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

SPIRITUAL TONIC FOR THE WEEK Deuteronomy 30:9

“Then the LORD your God will make you most prosperous in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your hand.”

“Faithful Father, thank You for the work that I do. I know that Your plan is to make me prosperous. I decree today: my efforts at work shall yield abundance. I will move from lower level of prosperity to greater prosperity. The products of my work shall always be good. Your Spirit shall be my senior partner in all that I do. Honour and Glory shall be attracted to me even as I faithfully serve You and Your Creation. Thank You Father. In Jesus pray (Amen).” DIOCESAN ANTHEM (TUNE: AUSTRIA)

Two college students lost track of time and were late to their math final. Thinking quickly, they smeared some grease on their face and hands and agreed on the excuse they would give. By the time they arrived at the classroom, it was empty. “We’re sorry, Professor Reese,” said Greg. “We were on our way here and got a flat tire. When we went to change the tire, we found the tire jack was missing, so we had to call for help. We finally got it changed and got here as soon as we could.” “You can come back on Wednesday and take the test,” said the professor. On Wednesday, the students showed up on time to take the exam. Professor Reese had each young man in a separate room with their test papers. The first question was very simple and was worth ten points. The second question noted that it would be worth ninety points. It read, “Which tire?”

“In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching[a] you received from us.” - 2 Thessalonians 3:6

John Stott, the renown English Anglican priest and theologian teaching on Work says: “Work is the expenditure of energy (manual or mental or both) in the service of others, which brings fulfilment to the worker, benefit to the community and glory to God. Simply put, Work refers to our physical labour carried out for the good of others and for our growth and advancement. We noted from the Scripture that God created mankind to work and not to idly exist on earth. “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to till it and keep it” (Gen. 2:15). Work is rooted in God’s design for human life. It is an avenue to contribute to the common good and as a means of providing for ourselves, our families, and those we can bless with our generosity.

Work started with God. He initiated Work and the first to do Work on earth. The Bible states that God worked for six days and rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2). Furthermore, Genesis 1:31 declares that, when God viewed the fruit of His labour, He called it “very good.” God examined and assessed the quality of His work, He declared that He had done a good job. As a result, legitimate work yielding good products reflects the activity of God. Because God is inherently good, work is also inherently good (Psalm 25:8; Ephesians 4:28). The Psalmist in Psalm 19 says that God reveals Himself to the world by His work. Through natural revelation, God’s existence is made known to every person on earth. Thus, we conclude that Work reveals something about the one doing the work. It exposes underlying character, motivations, skills, abilities, and personality traits. Jesus echoed this principle in Matthew 7:15-20 when He declared that bad trees produce only bad fruit and good trees only good fruit. In other words, Work is a pointer to personality and carries eternal value.

The question now is: “How can we work to glorify God?” Apostle Paul says in Colossians 3 that our relationship to work should be radically different from the world’s because of Christ. He argues that since the believer has been raised with Christ, he has a new heavenly position in Christ that should affect everything he does - how he thinks and what he wears, and even his work. Our relationship to Christ encompasses everything in our lives, including the workplace (Colossians 3:22–25). In our days, many people will work hard and get the job done if they know the boss is watching, but otherwise they do the minimum to get by. Some people will work hard consistently for more money or prestige or to advance their careers. As Christians, we are to work hard at whatever job we have because we are servants of God. Our duty to be a good reflection of His character and nature should impact the way we perform any task we are assigned. There is a constant temptation to grumble and complain about Work, but it is one we should resist. Work is not a curse rather it is a blessing. The Bible tells us: “And whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord you shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for you serve the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:23–24).

To make a difference at Work, Christians should not be lazy or indifferent as they go about their jobs. They should work hard, keep a positive attitude, be respectful, and be diligent. Paul says: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” (2Thessalonians 3:10). It should be noted that for many Christians God has chosen the workplace to be their primary mission field. It is where they will spend the most time and often where they will be around people. For the teacher, his/her mission field is her co–workers and students, for the doctor, the patients in the hospital are his mission field while the Civil Servants have their offices and the people they attend to as their harvest field etc.

It is in the workplace that many of us have the opportunity to spread the salt and light of Christ to people in an intimate way (cf. Matt. 5:13–14). For this reason, let us change our attitude to the Work we have to do and work at it to reflect the Kingdom of our Father. Isaiah 43:7 indicates that God created man for His own glory. In 1 Corinthians 10:31 we also read that whatever we do should be to His glory. The term glorify means “to give an accurate representation.” Therefore, work done by Christians should give the world an accurate picture of God in righteousness, faithfulness, and excellence.

Have a blessed week!
